have just watched Sopranos and am proud to say I recognised John Cooper Clarkes voice.Cant believe I havent listened to him for so long.Looks like he's just got himself a whole new generation of fans.Love the nite club idea.
I have this on audio tape (remember them!!) from 1977 or 78. Yes, I was there the 1st time around! I taped it off the tv when I was in the Navy!! It was a slow read poetry version in those days, no music just JCC at his best. Awesome he was!
"The fucking pies are fucking old The fucking chips are fucking cold The fucking beer is fucking flat The fucking flats have fucking rats The fucking clocks are fucking wrong The fucking days are fucking long It fucking gets you fucking down Evidently Chickentown"
I can't believe that this song has been around since 1979 and the first time I heard it was on the Sopranos. I feel like a loser. I'm gonna try playing it in a nightclub the coming weekend.
I've just seen John, the first time I've seen him live, at the Croydon Clocktower this evening. I was about to say that I thought this version of 'Chickentown' was from the television film 'Ten Years in an Open Necked Shirt, but it's already been said. I didn't like John's style when I first heard him, and it was this film, many years ago, which changed my mind about him. I've long ago lost my VHS tape of it, and I've never seen it repeated.
In Bangkok, I have to walk through somebody's chickenyard in shantytown just to get to work in the morning. I always think of this song. That's what this town is. Bloody Chickentown. "The bloody punks are bloody daft." Indeed.
This is Oxford Road station, I know because I caught a train home from there after school for seven years. It's a diesel train leaving platform 3, either to Urmston or Chester. From the viaduct you can see the building that later became the Hacienda, now knocked down. Malazan is right, Chickentown is your chickentown, wherever that is. I've been to Rhode Island, and it's really like that; its also like Leeds or Newark, NJ, or Glasgow or any of the millions of chickentowns.
@tomives1985 It took me a few minutes when to find this song and once I did I wanted to post "Thumbs up if you are watching this because of The Sopranos". But you covered it.
Been watching Soprano's for the first time with netflix and this "song" was at the end of episode "Stage 5." A really great ending with an important character vowing to never be "soft" again.
That's briliant, i'm out in Hong Kong (and drunk at the mo) so brings back many memories. Love Cooper Clarke. Can't find his poem about the Ritz anywhere. The blue saturation on your vid rocks, fookin mazin, lol
Thats brillent! If Im correct he's from Salford, Im hoping to go study there come september, can't wait to go to a place that has a rich local culture such as salford! with folks like him and christopher Eccelston it'll be interesting to explore!
I've just seen The Sopranos, too. Couldn't believe my ears when I heard JCC's voice! What a strange, very English record to hear on The Sopranos.....whoever chooses the songs on that programme knows their stuff
HBO does credit this song (and all music from the ep) on its Sopranos website. This song/poem was such a perfect punctuation mark at the end of an intense ep.
Indeed -- i know that this video was shot somewhere in the UK, but the scenery in this video looks a lot like it could've been taken from the PATH train between Newark and Jersey City. and not just because the song was used in "The Sopranos" (which is set in North Jersey).
Yes the building was there before the Hacienda, it was a yacht showroom I believe. I thought the white entrance was added when the Hac was opened, that's why I said 82, it could have been earlier your right. Ooo!
who picks the songs for the sopranos ive seen every episode the the songs they pick are always awesome! they couldnt pick better songs for that show and i love how it has no real score!
@Саша Сашиков Поскольку видео снято в Англии, слово относится к английскому сленгу и по смыслу это тоже самое что слово FUCK, но гораздо более мягкая форма. К крови не имеет отношения в данном случае. В США не употребляется в этом значении.
@mistical213 ME TOO I HAD AN IDEA IT WOULD BE HIM BUT IT TOOK ME AGES TO FIND OUT WAT THE SONG WAS ITS AWSOME IT FINISHED THAT EPISODE BRILLIANTLY WHO WAS ON THE SOPRANOS PRODUCTION TEAM TO SUGGEST A TUNE LIKE THAT !!!!!
This track is off an album called Snap Crackle and Bop...which also has the classic beasley street on it...seen John many times but first in 1977 at the apollo theatre Manchester...nice to see people are still enjoying his unique style...nice one JC you old twat !
Great stuff so long as you bear in mind that, in the real poem, the euphemism "Bloody" is never used. Did I hear something instead about forking? Also strongly recommended in their original text form: "Beazley Street" and "Tw*t". By the way: he's from Salford in Lancashire.
Love for the party love for the nation Love for the fix for the fabrication Love for the corpse for the corporation Love for the death and for the defecation Romance and assassination Bloody nation in desolation
Superb film. This is the Manchester I have fond memories of visiting in my youth before the redevelopers took over. Beautifully grim.
Saw this on Sopranos, perfect complement to the plot. Haunting end and haunting track. Cant get it out of my head.

How could I possibly be the first to comment on such a great poetry song!?!
Great to see the journey out of town from Oxford Road station as it used to be when I was a teenager. Things look different these days.
This song has been stuck in my head for 6 years.
the man is the God of lyrics. He was when I was at Owens Park in 78. Beasley Street has to be the greatest song / piece of poetry of all time
I love the Sopranos. Hearing this gives me chills.

Brilliant... there's nothing like Johnny Clarke's poems!
This is bloody great. I used to live in bloody Stevenage, bloody chicken new town at the same bloody time as JCC. Met him a few bloody times too.
Unbelievable. Gives you goose bumps how good it is.

This is a great song. I can't believe it's from 79. When I heard it first, yes sadly on the Sopranos, I thought it was a recent release.

This guy makes me proud to be a Manc
Maybe because it was used in an episode of "The Sopranos," which is set in New Jersey?!?
At 0:55 Is that The Haçienda?
Wow, does anyone know in what year that was filmed? I took that train ride a few weeks ago, and it certainly has changed quite a bit hasn't it!?

If so then what is your take on the ending, I'd appreciate if you shed some light on it?
