MAZEPPA!!! The story of the Hetman and the Horse, and one of Liszt's most daunting Etudes. For those of you who don't know, the galloping-like figures of this piece aren't just for difficulties sake - this Etude was inspired by the story of the Ukrainian military commander Mazeppa, specifically Lord Byron's poem about his youth, in where Mazeppa was tied to a horse and dragged around Europe as punishment for having an affair with a Polish Countess. There is obviously a lot more to the story, the summary and poem is available online for you to read, though even with this small piece of information the piece begins to make a lot more sense. This galloping motion is captured by Liszt in the use of his consecutive 24 -> 24 fingerings for the thirds (often disregarded by pianists for easier playing), but the feeling of the motion and physical look created by this movement is very reminiscent of a wild horse, it's amazing how many layers there are to the inspiration. I hope you enjoy the effects on this one, experimented more with the effects than usual and spent wayyyy too much time on designing them, though I think the result is pretty cool! All the best and wishing you all a beautiful weekend ♥

For the next little while, I will be posting less videos than I have for the last two years. I'm not sure exactly how many that will be or how long for, but along with life getting in the way a bit, there are some big things going on behind the scenes that I can't wait to get done and share with you. I'll keep you posted but you're all incredible, thank you for sticking around for so long and being part of this amazing 2.5 years ♥

Thank you to each and every one of you for being here with me on this journey. When starting this channel, I wouldn't have expected 1 MILLION people to find this much joy in classical and piano music, let alone 2 and now THREE! You are all incredible, never stop playing, listening and exploring new music! Hopefully my channel is only the tip of the iceberg for you, and you are exploring some of the piano greats from the last few decades, and maybe some of the more unknown composers too. For those who have a bit more experience with classical music, I'd love to hear your recommendations for some lesser-known (but equally great) composers, both contemprary and from history - hopefully we can introduce some budding musicians to a wider range of music :)

I like thinking about Liszt as he writes this song. He carefully puts each note onto the paper. 5:45 and just starts smashing his face against the piano in between every note. At this point, he realizes that he should probably take a break. He comes back later and finishes the song with some arpeggios and then a calmer more laid back part. Then he goes sike and creates a final banger ending.

    Did you know that…
Liszt dedicated this study to his friend Victor Hugo and is freely inspired by his poem Mazeppa from Les Orientales which tells the story of the hero's ride in the Ukraine, strapped on his mount. The tone of the piece is particularly heroic and after a desperate recitative, it ends with thunderous chords announcing the fall and resurrection of the horseman: "He falls at last! And rises again King! ».
    Well played Rousseau ! :)

This is my favorite performance of this piece that I've found. So many out there try to go as fast as possible or as forceful as possible, but Rousseau takes it at such a measured and calculated pace that it feels more nuanced and emotional rather than just pure show-off skill.

Fun Fact: Mazeppa survived being strapped to a horse and the horse we sent to run. Later after becoming leader of the Cossacks he sided with the Swedish in the Great Northern War. He ended up dying in the war in the Turkish fort of Bendery. King Charles of Sweden later followed him after a bullet was shot through his temples. This happened in the Siege of Fredriksten. Mazeppa's legacy from his younger "incident" still lives on today. If you want to dig into the Great Northern war watch Extra History's videos on it. If you want to find my source look at wikipedia articles for Charles of Sweden and Mazeppa. Also for the Siege of Fredriksten

If you wouldn't mind, I would like to explain my interpretation of this piece to you. This piece is my favorite piece of music ever, I can't find any other that contains the same emotions and feelings as this one. But, I always get sad to know that this piece is extremely underrated, and I think that's due to people not understanding it, because of this, I want to share my interpretation of it with you.
For me, this is a story of a young man, who has just been through a terrible event; the girl that he loves, a girl that he is really close to for years, and that he planned to make his, now belongs to another man. That, broke his soul and burnt his heart; desperate, he tries to discount it all on his piano; in the piece, you can hear a torrent of rage, sadness and anxiety as he drops the notes, creating a noise of agitation (0:04). As he pours down his rage, his mind goes away from all the disaster of is life, thus, recalling beautiful memories of more happy times, when he was closer to his beloved, this brings a beautiful and poethic section, in which you can hear relief, peace, and light (2:41). As he wonderfully play the notes, he remembers the why as to all the hatred, he suddenly recalls what she did to him, she betrayed him (4:06), now, all the consequences appear on his head at once. Quickly, his light touch becomes heavy, his agitation grows larger, and he releases all his anger into the keys again (4:41). He tries to calm himself (5:07), but it is of no use, he is to deep into this ocean of hatred, he again drops his fury into the keyboard (5:35). However, as sweat drips from his head and tears from his eyes, he starts to get tired, and weak, but the hatred only grows larger, he is forced to play the notes of his silvery hate, like a torture, his weakness and tiredness can be felt in each key (6:24). He quickly collapses to his weakness (6:46), and now, what can be heard is the anxiety and acceptance on his soul. However, as all his bad emotions have been poured into the piano, he founds determination, and starts to plan his happy ending (7:47); but his problems did not disappear, then, his happy ending rapidly transforms into more rage (8:01), and thus, the piece ends. A tale of neverending distress. Another thing to notice, is that the dissonant notes on the main theme represent his suffering. On the beggining, they are obvious and loud; then, as the character tries to hide his pain (5:07), the dissonance is less prominent and doesn't count with the pedal, as if he was trying to hide it. Then, right after that, he embraces all his emotions, and the dissonance is now played with 2 hands and is more obvious than ever.
I really love this piece, and I cannot bear the fact that no one here on this comment section talks about the piece, instead, they just talk about it's difficulty and nothing more. However, I hope my little tale changed your view on this beatiful work of art.

I listened to this song on my way home from a friend's house, and it matched everything I did perfectly. First, during the chaotic red part, I was got lost trying to get out of my friend's neighborhood. Second, the calming white part starts, and I see a Fred Meyers, and decide to go buy some candy. Third, I walk up to the doors but they're closed, and the white part starts to get crazy. Fourth, I pull out of the Fred Meyers and see someone got pulled over by the cops, and that insane green part starts. Fifth, I leave the cop car behind, and drive peacefully along an empty road as the slow red part plays. Then finally, the epic finale starts, and I see a Walmart, which I drive to and buy some snacks from as the victory music plays.
