I really appreciate your job. thanks for supplying us with the data .keep it up. Amazing place with the hard job you have completed Good Working Thanks for sharing keep it up.....
Excellent video and explanation. I have done one more step than this. I have scratch-files on a separate external hard drive and a separate hard drive for cashfiles as well(storage is cheap). All the photos(400k+) are on several external hard drives. Only the program is on my computer. Works great and fast.
Thanks for sharing! It is really important to have the photos on external drives not only for performance reasons, but also to back up images. I look to get a large SSD External in the future.
Having a Macbook Pro M1 13" with 8gb of RAM. Not sure at all what settings to make with those sliders. M1 is an integrated cpu / gpu chip. What would you suggest?
I found that the default settings on my M1 MacBook Air work just fine. I don’t use plug-ins on that machine and I can edit pretty smoothly. If you are running into issues though, I would recommend checking Activity Monitor while you work in ON1. See if the software is taxing your computer, and then adjust based on what you see. What you may want to do also is mover your photos to a hard drive that is USB 3.0 compatible or even a thunderbolt device. The performance of ON1 really does matter depending on the file location. No matter how you adjust the sliders if you are sending files through a slow connection you will have problems. I will also test some things out on my end to see what may work well.
On my i7 imac late 2015 32gb ram, the performance is very poor. The sliders behave slugishly and the pen of my wacom runs way faster than the edit. I will try what you suggest. I know my imac is old but I really think the ON1 performance shouldn't be so bad
Jose those are all issues I think ON1 needs to improve. I too experience a lot of crashes with ON1 Photo Raw 2022 on my M1 Mac. I am hopeful that they will get it back to normal. As for the WACOM tablet, sadly ON1 is not optimized for it very well. This has been an issue for a long time and I am not sure if that will ever get fixed.
Thank you for explaining the performance settings, very helpful. I have set mine to similar. Have a 1TB SSD for the system. When I upgrade my PC I will go for an even faster NVMe drive. I have an old by latest standards AMD Radeon 7950 graphics card with 3GB VRAM and 32GB RAM and AMD 9590 CPU. I get decent performance from my system and On1 doesn`t struggle. OK it takes a couple of seconds to load the high resolution RAW (64MP) from my Olympus E-M5MkII but they load from a conventional 6TB HD. An 8TB SSD is still quite expensive currently but one day... The standard 16MP images are no problem. Thank you again for your helpful advice. Take care and stay safe.
Thank you for the feedback. I am always excited to hear if the videos I put out are beneficial. I will be honest I am not the most knowledgeable on all of the computer spec. In my experience ON1 does well on various machines, sometimes it just takes a little adjusting in the preferences window. My images take some time to load as you may have seen in some of my previous videos, but so far my current settings offer the best performance. I plan to get a new Mac with the M1 chip and that may help me out, I just haven't hit the hard stop to inspire me to do that yet. Thank you for your support on this channel.
@@FreeWillPhotos Yes the M1 chip sounds good and I think Apple are producing a new more powerful graphics chip too which will help in image processing.
My Mac has 16gb of RAM, and I have RAM usage at the default 80%. I'm guessing I should keep it their, since I don't have 16gb. I came upon this video because I was doing a background replacement and I was trying to mask the subjects hair out (not as well as I'd like) and all of a sudden the ON1 froze. I had to do a force quit. Should I crank the usage up to 90%?
Another great question! 80% is the highest you can go in ON1 for the RAM useage. These are the areas where you would want to off load your cache to a different SSD. If that doesn't help, I would increase your cache size from the default of 5000MB to about 8000MB. From there you may want to lower your graphics settings and make sure the boxes are checked on fast panning, fast preview and GPU Render. The last box is really important if you are not working on a M1 Mac. Since the GPU is built into the M1, the processor is already doing the GPU heavy lifting. It is hard to tell if these things will help with your computer, because you could have other issues going on that I am not aware of. Now I am also not tech support for ON1, I am just a hobbyist that wants to help. If the problem keeps happening, I would suggest updating to the latest version if you haven't already and then reach out to ON1 tech support. You can send them your crash log so they can see what caused your system to crash ON1.
Great video! My iMac has an SSD HD (with plenty of storage remaining 400gb). Are use saying an external SSD drive would speed up ON1? Or does that only apply to those who do not have an SSD on their computer?
Hey Daniel great question! Programs usually perform better by taking some of the stress off of your internal drive. With you having an SSD, I am not sure if it will help out as much. The computer I was working on in this tutorial was an iMac with an i5 1TB standard hard drive. By getting the render files on to an SSD it improved my performance. I think everyone's computer will respond differently, but on the two computers I tested this process with I have seen improvements. I the past week I purchased a MacBook Air M1 8G RAM and 256 GB SSD and ON1 is really responsive. I also use this process with my Mac Mini M1 with a 1TB SSD and 16 GB RAM and I have no issues with getting through edits. The last thing I would say is, if you only plan to edit mildly then this process may not help you as much. One of the things I didn't really make clear is this helps with larger projects that have multiple layers and lots of masking. I hope this helps.
I’m not sure what you mean by this, but I write to an SSD for all of my edits. I would suggest reformatting the drive and using a format like ExFat or Extended Journal if you are using a Mac. Be sure to save any of your files on that SSD to another hard drive before you start reformatting it because you will lose those files when the formatting begins
Nice vid! Any idea whats the best settings are for the M1 Macbook pro (8gb ram) ? I find the ON1 Software to be a bit on the...well, slow side. Latest version of Monterey and On1 Photo Raw.
Good question, and sadly I am not definitive on my answer. I am still testing to see what works best for my uses. I am running an M1 Mac Mini with 16 GB RAM and a M1 MacBook Air with 8 GB RAM. On my Mac Mini ON1 works really fast and seems to be more stable than on my Mac Mini. I am running the default settings on my Mac Mini with all of my photos stored on an external 2TB SSD. I would suggest setting your System Usage to 80% and your VRAM Usage to about 50%. Also turn on Fast Panning, Fast Preview and GPU Render which may be unnecessary since the GPU is built into the CPU. I would also try maxing out your cache size on a fast SSD. Since I use my computer to do screen recordings, my settings are a little different to support those and reduce lag with mouse movements. You could also try lowering your video card performance if you are not going to do a lot of layer based edits or work on 50+ MP Files. Again this is just a guess as I am still testing out the best settings, but you will have to play around with it to see what is best for you. I hope this helps.
I've struggled with On1-2022, so much more sluggish on my Gen 2 i7 with 16Gb Ram, etc.... My biggest win is an INTERNAL additional SSD for cache and scratch folder
The SSD is a huge game changer. I would recommend lowering your resources used by ON1 from 80 to 50 and see if that helps it out a little. It sounds counter productive, but when I screen record that is what I have to do and it seems to work a lot better on my computer when I do that.
Thank you for explaining where the preferences are located in ON1. I have a PC running Windows 10 with (8GB RAM) and an internal SSD drive that was recently installed. I will drop those settings down to (50 & 45%) like you recommended as I do minimal precessing in ON1. I also have the Adobe Creative Cloud subscription where I do most of my processing (Sky Replacements). You also made reference to the Temp File which I now know where it is located oin my hard drive. Should I clear out the Temp File and if so when? You will probably that I am not that Tech-savvy.
Thank you for sharing your computer specs. As for reseting, I think this depends on where you store your cache files. If they are on the internal SSD I recommend you clear your cache at least once per week. If they are on an external drive then once per month would be good. Truthfully I have not cleared my cache in just a little over a month, and ON1 works well for me when I am not screen recording. When I record the screen, ON1 moves really slow. I am still experimenting with Cache clearing, but so far 5000MB has been working well. I am going to clear my cache today and see how it does next week, to compare it to the monthly clearing. I will keep you updated and maybe even make a video about it. Thank you for the question.
Hi and sorry for the long post. But I made the heartbreaking mistake of buying this software without factoring in that my current machine is insanely basic - a Mac Min 2018 Intel machine with: 8 GB RAM, an i3 processor and an Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB GPU. Predictably, it is struggling now with ON1. For what it's worth, the Mac Mini's hard disk is, I believe, a PCIe-based SSD (not sure what PCIe-based means) + I do have an SSD Drive plugged in using Thunderbolt 3. Here’s my list of possibilities based off your video. Would you advise me to do all of them. 1. Upgrade RAM? 16 or 32? Can do either. 2. Increase or decrease System and VRAM usage - both are at default 80 now. Would it perhaps be better to keep it high considering my machine is slow. 3. Increase or decrease cache size from the default. 4. Move Scratch folder location to the external SSD. 5. Move the Caches to the external SSD? 6. Delete the caches regularly? 7. Anything else? Thanks much in advance, you could be on the verge of saving my life :) On another note, should I even bother, in your opinion.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to answer this question for you. I will be fair in saying everything that I offer will just be an opinion, but I think it will be helpful to you. I think that you your largest limiting factor is the i3 processor. Since ON1 has a minimum requirement for an i5 you will struggle no matter which upgrade you add to your computer. In short you should upgrade your computer to get the best performance from ON1. In fact most photo editing applications require an i5 or equivalent minimum. I think anything short of that is asking for issues with most software. Some options to help your computer is to move the cache to an SSD. I have found that this does help with processing effects in ON1. You can also run Activity Monitor while you edit photos to see which effects eat your resources and then maybe use a "Stamped Layer" or "Merged Layer" to continue editing. What you may find is that once you add 3 or more effects to your image that your processor starts to bottle neck. To overcome that you can create a duplicate layer and then merge the layers to "permanently bake" those edits into your image. This workflow will save some resources, but you lose the "Non-destructive" workflow. With that said, ON1 is not stable as a stand alone. I am a fan of recommending using it as a plugin right now (thats if you bought the plugin package) since it loves to crash when using it as a stand alone. The downside to this is finding a RAW processor. I am testing Adobe Bridge because it is free, but to process RAW images you would have to subscribe to creative cloud to use Camera RAW. Unfortunately, I don't have a perfect solution for your situation as the main limiter is your processor and any workflow I suggest has the same minimum requirements as ON1. On the plus side, I purchased a 8GB RAM Macbook Air M1 Chip base model as an open box item from Best Buy and ON1 works great on there at the default settings. I hope this helps, and sorry that you purchased the software and you are now having a bad experience. Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions.
@@FreeWillPhotos Thanks so much for the detailed reply, all points have been duly noted. Not to be repetitive but you’re fully sure the extra RAM won’t help? Guess I’m going to be trying it anyway so I guess I’ll know soon enough. Unfortunately I can’t upgrade my processor so that’s that :)
No problem on the response, I just want to help as best I can. In regards to the RAM, you may see some improvement, but the i3 just isn't a fast enough processor to distribute the tasks efficiently to the RAM. What I think happens with ON1, and you should see this in your activity monitor, is that your CPU will get really close to maxing out at 100% and your RAM will also. When you are using 100% of your CPU and RAM to do work, you computer will heat up and slow down. Since ON1 is throwing a lot of tasks at your CPU, and truthfully not in the most efficient way, (which is what makes it unstable as a standalone), your computer will struggle no matter how much RAM you put in it. I can't recommend that as an option because your true limit is the processor. To be fair, the processor is the limit to every computer. The i3 was not designed to for graphics processing software. It was made for college kids that needed to do some multi tasking, but used mostly really light task oriented applications like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and internet browsers. If you look at the minimum requirements of any graphics processing software, the i5 is the baseline. I just don't want to give you hope that the RAM upgrade will solve your problem when you could invest that money in a computer with a faster CPU. I know I mentioned the base model Macbook Air as an option, but you can also get the base model Mac Mini.
