  • Man what a journey this track was! I was not expecting "Foreplay" in the slightest but if were going there we might as well finish so we have "Long Time" as well. Ok, sorry, I had too. This is our first flash request post winner of the week. Thank you Dave S for this awesome pick. These guys rock!

And THIS is how you close the first side of your debut album.
When the album first came out, radio stations only played "Long Time" by itself. But as the AOR stations gradually transformed into the "classic rock" stations of the 80s, they started playing "Foreplay" as well, and after that you never heard this without both songs being played together.

It helps to understand the times, to appreciate how epic this album was. It came out around the same time as Star Wars, with the same amazing new space age sound. Tom Scholz, being a sound engineer, designed the equipment that turned his guitar and keyboard into something incredibly new. He wrote most of this album in his basement and signed a record deal before even having a complete band.

This is one of the greatest driving songs of all time. It's one of those songs that make drivers who are normally responsible drivers suddenly start driving 95MPH whenever this song starts playing on the radio in their cars. BTW, I grew up in a city called Lynn, Massachusetts which is about 10 miles north of Boston on the seashore. One of the towns next to Lynn is Swampscott, MA. Several members of Boston lived (still live) in Swampscott. It was so crazy to be a kid and knowing a band from Swampscott released this masterpiece of a debut album. My cousin lives in Swampscott and went to high school with them.

Boston's drummer was in reality great! Back in the 70's there was a movement that required a drummer to "hold back" and let the rest of the band have its day. But live... he was a monster! If you ever doubted his chops, you had to see him live to learn the truth.

And you commented on it but here's that thing about that iconic debut album from boston, there is such a range of material on that album and yet it is such a distinctive sound that the minute you hear it on the radio even if it's brand new you know immediately that it's boston. This album is incredible. It's got the most beautiful ballads but you will also hear them rock at least this hard on a couple other of the songs on the album at least. Definitely the songs Smokin', and, Rock and Roll Band.

Controlled chaos! Every song on this album is A+. The sounds Boston made on this album where so totally new to us back then that on the inner sleeve of their second album they had to put on a disclaimer..."No Synthesizers Used" and "No Computers Used". Completely different from Steely Dan but the result was the same. Pure perfection. Heart (very diverse music) and The Cars (could have been called "The Cars Greatest Hits) are two more fantastic debut albums. But Boston has to be the best IMO. But "A Man I'll Never Be" off their second album is my favorite Boston song.

"Foreplay" has the anticipation, launch, and arrival in space of the guitar spaceship city that is Boston. The "effects" are Tom's own circuits PLAYED/Performed on a guitar. In addition to his master pick slides, he also had a tool he used to play the strings with.
Also genius was how quiet it got before the explosion of "Long TIme". Back in 1976/1977 you'd crank up the volume during the quiet part of "Foreplay" to then get blasted when "Long Time" kicks in - we definitely maxed-out the capabilities of our sound systems.

add a few more things to Tom Scholz’s list… he pretty much invented everything you hear. he was an MIT-trained engineer who designed and built his own studio, including the guitar processor, which is why he sounds like nobody else. Brian May from Queen did something similar, though I don’t think anyone is more extreme than Scholz.
