The Jack Benny Show ran on television for 15 seasons and on radio for 24 seasons, so Jack Benny was in primetime across America for 39 seasons! He was an amazing comedy genius and here is a link to this whole episode if you would like to see the whole thing with my team of Benny fans and historians commentary after th-cam.com/video/yc8n7MkmeBM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MODPLUQHP4-uhbEK
And he was always 39 years old.
Jack Benny often made jokes of his violin playing. Once, according to Jack, on a visit to the White House, the Secret Service agents saw his violin case and asked Jack what was in the case. Jack answered saying "It's a machine gun". The agent replied, "Oh, ok. For a minute there I was afraid you had brought your violin."
Thank you for the laugh
😂
Oh no
Oh, that is amazing
So the machine gun is ok
The young man's comedic delivery was absolutely spot on. Outstanding.
Takes a smart kid to be able to pull off lines like that while still feeling genuine. Quite impressive and tallented of the lad! Unfortuneately I still play violin at a level far below that kid (or Jack Benny for that matter)
Anyone know who he is and what he's doing now?
I wouldn't say outstanding, he just paused slightly. Sure he practised
I wonder where is he now
@ If he is still alive then he is quite old. This was filmed post WW2.
Jack's walking down the street when a mugger jumps out with a gun. "Your money or you life!" After a long pause, Jack says, "I'm thinking! I'm thinking!"
Sounds like something Rodney Dangerfield would say too.
😂😂

“I was doing homework when I started whistling. The whistling was disruptive to my dad. My dad would say “must u whistle while u work.” A moment later my dad hears me whistling again. My dad comes to my room and says what did I just say. I told my dad I did stop….working. “ I think that was a Benny joke or possibly a Gleason joke. Can’t beat the greats. Still able to generate laughs without profanity or profane content.
In The Piglet Movie a stunt to fool bees into leaving a hive so Pooh can steal their honey goes awry and as angry bees are about to threaten Pooh and friends, Pooh is still trying to capture the honey and Rabbit anxiously says "We must go Pooh, it's your honey or your LIFE!" with Pooh making the exact Benny pose of folded arm and scratched head replying "I'm THINKING" before he's dragged away. I was maybe 32 at the time but I burst out laughing.

I loved this bit. "I used to" - One of the funniest punchlines ever on the Jack Benny Program.
And Mr. Benny’s face afterwards was gold 😂
Humble, self-deprecating humor is what made him watchable and worthy of being adored by so many.
Well said
It was pretty darn good on the radio too
They always make lots of jokes about his violin playing but in real life, he was an amazing violinist.
That's why Carson was king---he learned from the best.
Jack Benny also defended Rochester from a hotel that wouldn't let him stay.
A classic. A legend. He had to practice hard to play terribly since he was quite accomplished on the violin!
Ðo you know how difficult it is to play the violin scratchy and incorrect well Jack Benny mastered this almost every episode 😂 😅 ❤
You have to be pretty good to play badly so consistently. 😁
Yes. You have to be good to be bad. He was wii liked by other show biz people stars etc. Best straight man.
It sounds even worse when someone is decent but not anything you'd pay to hear.
That’s a great story
Years ago, my brother wrote on a dollar bill, "if found, return to (his name and address)". He received a letter from Jack Benny requesting a dollar in exchange for the dollar that was being returned.
At least Jack didn't ask for the cost of postage!
End of story? What happened? Did your brother follow up?
Did Jack Benny just happen to find it? If so, that's wonderful! If not, how did he come to receive it?
@@sarcasticnews1195 Yes, I'd like to know the follow up too. Love the story!
That is so random I absolutely believe it😅

That is seriously a very cool story
I have never seen this bit before. So hilarious and the kid's timing on the punch line was absolutely perfect.

I haven't seen this before either. Lol 😅😅😅
🤣🤣🤣 " I used to ", comedy gold.
Jack Benny always made HIMSELF the butt of his jokes.
That's the beauty of self-effacing humor: You know for a ROCK-SOLID FACT that the subject won't take it the wrong way.
I'd say to trust me, but I never take myself seriously; I know where I've been.
I often make myself the butt of jokes, but they often fly over peoples head so they think I’m being serious. Or maybe I’m just not as funny as I think I am.
He was brilliant at it, making fun of himself instead of other people.

I grew up in the 1960s and I remember Jack Benny, Rochester, Fred, and his announcer Don. My late father used to tell me how Jack and the cast looked different to him than expected when he first saw them on television in the 1950s after he had listened to the Jack Benny Show on radio for years.
I miss the comedians of my youth and I especially miss Johnny Carson.
I hope people remember Jack Benny. He was the best.

He's a pretty good actor, at 0:47-0:48 seconds in the clip hes got this great expression of "I'm annoyed with this child". The control and expression of the facial muscle change was spot on.
One time when we were about 12 my best friend and I were staying at a resort hotel and we saw Jack Benny and George Burns walking through the lobby so we ran after them and jumped into the elevator right behind them then we couldn't think what to say so I looked up at George Burns and I said sir do you have the time and he literally said I have the time if you have the nerve!!!!! We got out at the next floor and we never ever stopped laughing and talking about that they were both very old at the time
Oh wow 😂
One of my favorite moments of Jack and George interacting on TV was where they were both gonna do a performance together. They offered 10k, and 15k if George didn't sing. George leans over and goes "We'll take the ten"
Still bust up over that one
Man, that's an awesome memory to have!
Perfect!❤😂 Love how Jack Benny would always make himself the brunt of the joke.
May Jack Benny be "Forever 39"... 😁💕
One of the most intelligent and philanthropic comedians/gentlemen EVER. Jack Benny, of blessed memory.
Of all the great comedians from the 30s-60s Jack holds up the best! He was truly amazing on so many levels
He really was a great person as well as a very funny man. He was among my favorite comedians when I was growing up, born in 1961.
Dick Van Dyke was my #1 favorite comedian, and I taught myself to do pratfalls without injury to make my friends laugh. I still know how to do a tumbling "fall" safely, but now that I'm 63, it scares people if I do a pratfall. Yeah, I'm officially OLD now!
The old-time comedians I loved most were the Marx Bros. (Harpo's sweetness stole my ❤), Benny, Van Dyke, Lucille Ball, George and Gracie Burns, Art Carney, and others.
Two comedians I never liked were Jerry Lewis and Milton Berle, especially Berle. Something about that guy always gave me the creeps, and now that I've read about what a perverted jerk he was, I can see why. His appearance on SNL was one of the worst hosts ever, up there with Musk and Segal as terrible guest hosts.
Berle was actually banned from SNL after his horrible appearance in 1979, his monologue was full of terrible jokes that were racist, homophobic, and simply in bad taste. There's nothing funny about hate.
@@LazyIRanch
I never liked Berle either, not even a little. Jack was always my giggle fix.😂
@@LazyIRanch hilarious to me the idea that you're doing pratfalls to mess with people at 63. Kinda like Willy Wonka walking out of the chocolate factory
Agree, and wonder why he isn't better known today, outside of the generations that were around to see his work first hand. Not many people my age (millenial) know his name.
Alfred Hill loved him, that's why he got his artistic name after Benny
Jack Benny was one of the best comdedians ever! I miss these old shows.
My grandfather was known to all his friends as "Jack" even thought his given name was John. Even my elder brother who worked for my grandfather for several years never knew why he was called Jack. Then one night at 3am, I saw the Jack Benny Program. It wasn't long before I realized my grandfather was a Jack Benny fan and used to do impressions of Jack all the time. Jack's stance, where he leaned back a bit, one hand under the opposing elbow, the other hand on the cheek, the slow look around, my grandfather did that all the time. We were all just too young to get the gag. He would talk like Jack and was even "unusually frugal" solidifying why his friends called him Jack. About the only Jack-ism he missed was he never took up the violin. It was a bit surreal learning this about a man who had been gone for many many years.
Lucky moment when you realized the reason, what a fantastic story!
Sorry for your loss
Jack is a nick name for John. JFK was also known as Jack.
I understand that it's hard finding out things about family that have since passed on as I have learned some good and some bad since my grandfathers have both passed on. RIP to your grandfather Jack and prayers for him, you, your family, and friends.
@@pika23 That's true, but has nothing to do with my grandfather. He was not a Kennedy fan.

Master of the simple expression that could bring down the house. He lived in a house of cards but had a healthy ego to go along with a look of self satisfaction that was quickly burst by friends and strangers alike. One brilliant effortless comedian.
Master of the slow burn!
I'm led to believe that Mr. Benny would drive out into the countryside looking fir a great cup of coffee and he visited a lot of mom and pop establishments and was a very generous man.

I'd be willing to bet he enjoyed doing this, to meet new, interesting people. it'd be hard to come up with new material, if you never had new experiences
I did read somewhere that he was actually very nice and generous off-stage, but I have no idea where. Probably his Wikipedia page.
I was a "child actor" way back in the day and when I was 10 I was one of two boys picked for a part on his TV show and Jack Benny himself made the final pick...and it wasn't me. That's show biz!
But just seeing him for the few short minutes it took was a big thrill and that night I can still remember the smile on my father's face when I told him that I saw Jack Benny
And while waiting for Benny to appear, Jimmy Stewart and his wife walked by down on the stage floor.

Having been born in the mid 70’s, this was a bit before my time, but I’ve seen a lot of Jack Benny since then and I can confidently say that he was one of the best to ever do ‘comedy’🤣😜
Why the quotation marks for 'comedy' though? And I agree, I'm a millenial and wish he was better known by people today. His stuff holds up and aged well. His movies from the 40s, George Washington Slept Here and To Be or Not To Be, are wonderful.
@ It’s because Jack was so self deprecating in his hilarious routines that I thought it would be funny to put comedy in quotes. As if what he was doing wasn’t comedy.

I never liked Jack Benny when I was a kid. Now that I am older, I can see what a talented actor and comedian he was. This kid who has played for two years gives Jack Benny the best "burn" by saying he "used to" play like Jack. Coming from a kid it is such a great joke because Jack had played violin for at least 50 years by then and even performed concerts across the country with the greatest orchestras in the world.

I have seen some episodes of the Jack Benny show on channels that show old TV and I grew to like the man. His humor still holds up quite well and when I was younger I was surprised by how surreal and wacky the show gets sometimes. Like "This is not what people who idealize the past act like it was like." But I guess I shouldn't have been too surprised, as I've gotten older I've found that some segment of people have always enjoyed such things.
