Thinking of ordering Chinese take out? Think again. I drove taxi in Toronto on weekends while attending Centennial college. Received a radio call to go to a Chinese restaurant on Danforth Avenue (WHAT A DUMP). As I waited at the side kitchen door for the order, I saw two workers using a pail beside a crate of vegetables as a urinal. Lots of "splashing" on to the vegetables. When done, they simply "gave it a shake," zipped up and went back to work without hand washing. I left without the order and contacted my dispatcher who called the customer. She was very grateful for my decision. I called the Health department Monday morning.

My late father worked for a Toronto utility and got into every home and business in Toronto. This was back in the days when all meters were inside, mostly in basements. He always had horror stories about Chinese restaurants, especially the Spadina/Dundas area. He saw lice, assorted "critters" on vegetable crates, dead and alive rats and mice, pails used as toilets and even the occasional dead cat (tomorrow's Chef's Special I assume.). Amazing what you see "behind" the counter.

That would've been before the current health and safety inspection regime implemented by the City of Toronto for food establishments.
