    I use TransY for mastering my techno. It's a nicely built compressor with a nice sound.

    I bought it for listening in the mixbus type of environment
    It definitely brings out Midrange and colors the sound, in a very analog type of way
    High frequencies are more sharp, so that could be good or bad, at lower ratios
    But pull ratios up and it will gobble up the high end and low end.
    Low end becomes tighter, but less boomy.

      Thanks for sharing some details on coloration from this compressor. I have also experimented with a graphic eq on the detector circuits. Beyond the scope of this video, but sidechain eq had considerable impact on the way compression shaped tone with the TransY. I agree, as you said this box does color the sound in a very analog way... Cheers!

    Whats unique about this compressor is its a Feed-Forward FET the only other Feed-Forward FET I can remember seeing was those 1970s era Blue Orban 418 compressors and those were mostly used in Radio with the goofy open wire U clamp for i/o which isn't really good in a modern studio. The 1176 & 1178 circuits are Feed Back compression so that is what perked up my interest on this ART compressor I picked up a pair of them at a small town music store in Rural Virginia 2 days ago for $400 which is cheaper than buying a single unit new and neither one had a scratch on them. The guy said he got them in a trade for a mixer so lucky me! Thanks for your review!! Cheers!!

      Thanks for sharing a bit of history on the 418. They still pop up on Reverb from time to time and don't last long! Great deal on the pair of Transy comps...Enjoy!

    Slap a “Neve” or “API” badge in this, and it would cost 2k. The ART sounds incredible.

    Hi Todd! I got a suggestion for you. You have reviewed a couple of AKG headphones in the past, so i would like for you to review a pair of AKG reference open back headphones known as the AKG K702. According to AKG, the headphones are designed for "precision listening, mixing and mastering". I would love to see you run audio tests on them to see if those claims are true.

      I have a set of 702s in for review...coming soon. Cheers!

    This is embarrassingly good. Holds its own to an 1178, just not quite as mid forward tonally (i know its not the same thing)

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a great way of describing this compressor. It doesn't have the ultra-fast attack of the 78 so more of the lower transients tend to slip through and as you say it is not quite as mid forward, but the additional available release time on the TransY offers other tone shaping options. All said for the price it is surprising what this compressor is able to deliver. Worth having in the rack imo. Cheers!

    Hello from Greece. I would like to hear a work of yours (mix). Where could I find one? I believe if I listen to a mix of yours I could understand a lot about the presentations of the machines you do..

      Sorry for the delayed response and Hello from Canada. I will be putting up a number of mixes along with details of what I used on the tracks on my website. There is a bit of a delay as I am working on the licensing, however I expect to have these available later this year. I will announce this on my channel when it is ready. Thanks for asking.

    Thank you SO much for this review!!! What types of tracks do you tend to use this compressor on? How well does it perform as a master buss compressor?

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you enjoyed the review and I hope it helped with your decision. I generally use the TransY on vocals, acoustic guitar, and for a number wind instruments (nice on tenor / alto saxiphone, clarinet). It also works well on bass. It works well on 2-bus keeping the compression below 4dB (I generally keep 2-bus compression below 2dB). At those levels compression is transparent enough while still helping to glue the mix. It definitely imparts an analog sound (which is one of the reasons I like this compressor). Cheers!

      @@askdrtk After watching you other reviews.... I've narrowed it down to the 2 I am contemplating. The TansY or the VLA-II. Thoughts?

    • @shapeshiftersmediagroup
      @shapeshiftersmediagroup ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gelderlandproduction same two i'm thinking...and i'm wondering the same thing. there is a video comparing the two but i still can't decide...surprisingly it seems like the TransY holds its own with the slightly more expensive VLA ii, but I guess it depends on what sound you're going for. The TransY is an FET compressor whereas the VLA ii is an Optical compressor. The TransY is harsher and more punchy and the VLA is smoother and more warm. Knowing all this, I'm still at a tied hands about which one to get

    Very nice piece of hardware, it is a shame the availability is very poor just like the the also very nice pre the trans x...

    • @askdrtk
      @askdrtk  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So much hardware has had poor availability over the last couple of years. It's been driving prices up for both new and used markets. There may have been some signs of improvement this year, but it is still going to take time. (It would be nice to see ART up their worldwide distribution game...)
