I've been playing guitar for 24 years and this is hands down the best breakdown/analysis of the notes on the fretboard I've ever seen. I'm an intuitive player and play by ear. I've been wanting to learn what I'm actually doing for years and this finally cracked the code for me. Your face to face students are lucky! Thank you so much for these videos!

    Hi Ricky
I am 52 years old and have been dabbling is guitar for several years. In that time, I have had numerous private guitar lessons and I’ve purchased more online courses than I can count.
Like many others, I have always found fret-board theory extremely daunting, confusing, and tedious, but the way you explain things with simple diagrams is genius.
After all these years of trying to learn songs from tabs and other general guitar related time wasting, I finally realised I would never get out of my rut unless I start memorize the fret-board notes.
Since I found your channel on TH-cam my playing has improved noticeably, and I so wish I had found you sooner. I’ve been studying your material for less than a week and I have finally learned the fret-board using a combination of your CAGED theory lessons and this chunking approach.
    I love your teaching style.
    Thank you.

I'm from Brazil , and I'll be honest . When I first looked at your video I had the impression it wouldn't be good for the lack of a great production , but hey mate I was completely wrong .... you've done through your 3 minutes videos something I'm quite sure is super important for any guitar player in the world in a simple , intelligent and practical way . I feel I really owe you that . all the best mate !🇧🇷😊

I've played many years and kept skipping this video because it appeared to remedial. I'm good at some living yard problems but Iver complicate simple ones. Over the years I've come up with hilarious phrases to memorize the fretboard such as Don't Get Caught Fishing After Dark (10th) fret. Having looked at hundreds of diagrams I have never seen the fretboard illustrated vertically like this, nor explained in such an easy to remember way. You are an excellent teacher and thank you!

I just bought my 1st guitar, & signed up for online guitar lessons through Udemy. Have been working with that a little. But have to say, this is my 1st time viewing this particular lesson. I even understood it, & I know nothing about guitar. Saw one of your other videos about memorizing the musical alphabet backwards using Mr. T, a kid pointing at him, & what appeared to be an FBI agent. You were wearing a hat w/FBI on it. That stuck out, & I worked w/that lesson as well. Thank You!

I have learned so much more from your instruction than I have any that I have seen online in the last couple of years. Your fretboard video taught me the fretboard less than halfway through the video. the fact that you employ both traditional, and non-traditional teaching techniques together is awesome. Wish I were local, I would sign up for your school.

But, after watching this video I understand the fretboard and have memorized the location of the chunks and notes individually! It worked!! This video, and your excellent teaching abilities, made things “click”. This is exciting for me. I played around on a guitar when I was 15 for about 3 years, with a few lessons. Now I am 68 and feeling drawn back to it again (middle age crisis HA). I have learned more in 26 minutes watching your video than I did in 3 years when I was younger. This all makes sense now by having a visual dry erase board showing the patterns. I can't wait to see your other videos and practicing with them. The visual image of the keyboard has made all the difference in the world. Thank you so much for doing these videos.

I kinda stumbled onto this by listening to what I was playing. A light came on and I began to play all over the key board. About freaked me out. Now I go all up and down the key board playing. But yet I still feel I'm in a rut. But practice makes perfect and leads you sometimes by accident into more things to play and more to learn and figure out. Thanks for sharing.. I got a long way to go. But for me prayer helps me the most. God is our best friend and He lacks no knowledge at all so PRAY and ask God to help you. Of course I am asking Him to help me play beautiful music that I know He would like and that I would like to and especially that it inspires people who hear to go the right way. Thanks!

  • @rosewood1
    @rosewood1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ricky love this explaination. It also means visually you can diagonally easily well fairly easily diagonally transpose to move across to identify the same note. So when your reading music you can play e.g. middle c and other notes (chord) up and down the guitar.
    More practice!

Some excellent pointers of how to help memorize the guitar fret board notes. Notes B, C, and E, F without a space between (next to each other), and "loner"notes G,A,D with a space before and after. Of course spaces are where the Sharp's or Flat's go.

Very good. Just cleared my road block. Could not figure out the keys. I was counting from the neck and getting lost along the way. Was very frustrated. Most instructors just put their fingers fast all over the fret board and before you know it they are on the next key. Oh my God. So logical. Good job. You made my day.

Hello Ricky, Without looking at the comments previous to watching this lesson, half way through I said this is without doubt the absolute best method to start to learn the guitar fretboard, after watching the video I then looked at the comments, I wanted to leave one, I notice everyone else said the exact same thing, I notice you did not explain # and flats, but that's quite easy to get ones head around, your idea of the chunks method is definately the starting point, playing guitar for 40 years, and never learned the fretboard, maybe I'm too late, always wanted to play lead guitar be it country or rock, improvise with my own bits of nothings, sometimes sounding great, ask me repeat, forget it,
It's only now I'm realising not knowing the map of the fretboard is what was holding me back all along, I must check out your videos, once again excellent tutorial here, and I'm not surprised everyone on here loves your teaching, stay safe

I think I finally got it! Thank you so much! I've been playing guitar about 15 years and always been struggling with this... I've watched so many other videos which made me just more confused, but this was easy and simple (and actually very logical) way to memorize fretboard.

I have been looking for several years to understand the notes on the fretboard and literary in two videos you have made it so clear! Brilliant!
    Thank you!

I ordered your book! I've playing for years with a muddled idea of things. I'm on lessons 5-7 and this online/book stuff is really clarifying my playing, and what is happening musically - conquer major, move on to its little sibling the minor, and beyond!

Yes, it really makes a lot of sense. You are great instructor. All the books out there don't simplify it, the way you did. Thank you.

I have epilepsy, which caused me to have memory issues, and in turn created problems for me with trying to remember the note locations on the fretboard. Recently, the desire to try again to learn has started a fire inside for me to push and learn to do what I want to do... play guitar. This video made me feel as if I found a key to a lock. Thank you. I subscribed.

Thank you!!! I’m 70, and I’ve had a stroke, but you really explain it for everyone.

If you've had a stroke. You might want to consider hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT for short). It may help you recover what you lost. Expensive but worth a try. Good luck.

Thanks, this is the first video that explained how to learn the notes on the fretboard to find the whole notes. The sharps and flats are easy after learning this. Too many guitar teachers really confuse us players that don't know where all of the notes are and really talk right over my head, since guys like me have played be ear for quit sometime, without learning these basics.

Never could memorize the fretboard. Ricky's "chunks" are the light I needed in a dark room. Thank you Ricky, loved it!

Finally! I've watched so many of these fretboard memory lessons. This thinking in chucks is something my brain can grasp on to. Thank you.
