    That was a fantastic lesson thank you so much. Wish I had had a teacher like you when I was 11 here I am middle-aged and still playing house of the rising sun. But lessons like this are really helping me. I never knew there was life beyond the 12th fret.

      72 YO - had piano lessons as a kid and that only lasted a couple years. You can't keep the attention of a kid with classical music when he wants to be Fats Domino or Chubby Checker - those were the a&& kickers of the day.
      Learning the keyboard is a no-brainer compared to the fretboard. It looks the same from top to bottom. That gave me a head start on theory but that was it. Fast forward to the day I decided to pick up a guitar and then Twenty two years later, I'm in the same boat with you. I've seen a lot of online instruction and Ricky has one of the best approaches to teaching I've seen.
      If I can get out of this on-again off-again routine I think he can actually teach me how to have fun with this 5 string + 1 instrument.
      Funny thing, one of the first songs I learned was House of the Rising Sun. Great minds.... right?

    Holy cow big guy! This is the craziest, unorthodox, mind bugling way to memorize the fretboard. And most of all, even I could learn this puzzle. How you sliced and diced this fretboard and knowing where you're at at any given time is simply awesome. Cheers from Florida, USA.

    Thanks Rickey! I’ve wondered since the time I started learning guitar, how I would easily descend with these patterns. I was hearing and seeing the ascending notes and patterns, but hadn’t fully or securely “memorized” or know ALL the notes on the fretboard so descending seemed impossible or at least very frustrating to grasp! You are an AWESOME Teacher! This should start bringing me to another of many necessary breakthroughs in order to advance my playing skills. You make it fun!

    Ricky thanks a lot for all your help
    And videos, I wish you were here in Tyne and Wear NE to teach me in person. I have purchased your book though and it’s arriving. So I have figured out some new patterns on the fretboard in this video. First of All, all the 3 scales modes have 17 notes without the sharps and flats that ascend and descend in a vertical way, that reminds me an escalator (scales) that moves people (notes) when a new person (note) step on it, the next one down or bellow (because we have escalators that goes down and up) and when one is reaching the end this person is moving away (the kink between the B note, is moving away the escalator (scale pattern ). I hope you understand this way I see. I think your the best teacher here, because you are patient, cool, funny, ludic (playful) and lovely.

But you sir, you just taught me how to do it EFFECTIVELY. That late Charles's father coupled with A team being spotted by that american boy, all the way to Aeolian, Phrygian and Dorian, just unlocked my fretboard!! Thank you teacher, from the bottom of my heart

    Just to throw in here something I've been doing, is using the metronome with learning the fret board. Setting the metronome to 4/4, and hitting each note four times on the beat.. while playing scales (or something like it LOL). I can practice different beats this way, too. This gives me a chance to error correct and adjust with the fingers and pluck before the next note. I remembered this technique when learning the violin in school for a few months when I was 8.. Came in handy then, and is working for me now.

    • @rickysguitar
      @rickysguitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love this Benjamin! I did a video a while back that I never published about learning scales. Try this for more homework: as well as playing each note 4 times, work on it as a rhythm pyramid by playing the note twice per beat and then once per beat. Once the muscle memory kicks in on the singles it’s time to up the tempo in increments of 10bpm. Keep going until it fails. Write what bpm it fails. Do that as part of your practice routine. It’s astounding to see how much faster your “break” speed is after a few weeks of doing this!

    • @benjaminbrink5098
      @benjaminbrink5098 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rickysguitar Thank you. As my error rate drops, I'll switch to fewer notes. I was going to go 3 then 2 then 1, and yet I like your idea of 2 then 1. Right now bpm is set at 127. I started at about 60bpm. My stretch target is 260 after a little warm up. Since I've reached my minimum goal of 120bpm, that of average songs and the song I'm learning, I'm starting to learn "the 10 Chords Every Beginner Guitar Player Should Begin With" (from your worksheet) and adding a couple to get all the ones in my target first song.

I’ve watched your other videos about fretboard navigation, and albeit they’re all very good - this is the best one! I have been playing guitar for years, and I confess I never learned the notes on the fretboard. Now I understand why I should have, long ago--along with learning what notes are in the chords I play. I thought Ricky's comment about learning the musical alphabet forwards AND backwards was one of the many takeaways from this lesson, as was his diagram breaking the fretboard into three zones to make this "alphabet" knowledge more instantly useful. Very helpful, and I look forward to using this new insight.

    WHY aren't more guitar instructors teaching this, Ricky??? I mean I've taken lessons from numerous guitar instructors over the years and picked the brains of guys who like you know the fretboard inside out YET not one of those 'cads' (said lovingly mind you) ever thought to present the fretboard in this manner! Yet in an online 30 minute video you've covered the whole note tones for the entire fretboard in one.... fell.... axe wing. Good show and thank you so much for this and the other logical fretboard videos. They've helped me. :)

    Thanks for doin this, the way you teach is so inspiring and fun also. I just started as a keyboard player with the e guitar. And following all your vids, please keep more stuff up for beginners. I find stretching hands fingers, arms warming up in general before playing also a very important.

    Similarly, years ago I started memorizing my musical staff spelling from the top of the Treble Clef going in reverse order with FED, C, BAG ; FED, C, BAG etc. I like your breakdown on the fret board. Thanks.

    Thanks Ricky, tapping into strategies to remember through association.

    Excellent explanation. I'm currently learning the modes of the major scale, so very timely information. I've put off learning the individual notes on the fret board for far too long. I knew there must be a way to make the patterns of notes easier to remember. 🎸🤘

    This is great! I like new ways of looking at things about the guitar. (I watched the “Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles’ Father” lesson some time ago.)

    Great way of memorizing. Just another nmemonic I noticed. The first section is Phrygian and you started with an F, kind of like Ph. Then the second area was Aeolian and you started with the A note and the last section was Dorian and you started with a D. This helps me remember the zones. And thanks for the nmemonic of Gee FED BCA. This is very helpful just like the 5th Root 3rd. 5R3. Thanks again.
