Excellent explanation Ricky - clear and concise. I've been playing guitar for over 60 years and I've got away with not knowing the notes I've been playing throughout this time. My musical tastes have changed and, instead of Chuck Berry etc. with a bass player and a drummer, I now play Celtic melodies with fiddle, pipe and accordion players. @@TingleTangleJones I get what you mean now. Looking at it relative to the open string what you say makes sense. I figured it was something like that. I was thinking in terms of tone- you were referencing physical location. I guess what matters most is how it sounds! Cheers!
I'm 62 and had an on off love with guitar all my life, got to know a few songs just enough to where people could recognize them and could add lib a little with pentatonic blues riffs and never was able to learn the neck. I thought I was going to have to post a little sticky note under each note and play the neck over and over until it sank in. I've got ms also so my learning is a bit sketchy, this really called out to me the first watch. This is the trick for me, so clear, it's beautiful. Thank you so much.
Simply amazing! I've watched hundreds of guitar videos on notes, scales, etc. I've been playing over 20 years and do pretty decent but I've had to learn the hard way (no scales or note names). This is by far the most informative video I've seen. Good job man! Thoroughly enjoyed it!
I have watched many videos on this topic. All of them taught by people who clearly know what they’re talking about. I’m not bashing them at all, but as is this case when trying to learn anything, you eventually find someone or some thing that explains it in such a way that it all clicks. This gentleman has given me that click. I feel like I now have a solid base from which I may be able to finally get this once and for all. Thank you sir.
Started learning this 3 days ago and now I know the whole fretboard l have been struggling for a long time to do this until I learnt the pneumonic phrase and it's a perfect fit amazing how it works!!!!
Been playing about 3 years now. I figured this out about 6 months ago and could never find anyone that was teaching it. I almost made a video about it because there was just nothing out there. Thanks for the video.
I've been playing for three years and been terrified of learning the frets because it seems so daunting. Honestly this is the best video I've ever seen on the topic. Honestly can't believe this is the first I've ever heard of this. I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Just thank you
I just keep coming back to how amazing this is. Hopefully I remember when I get paid so I can send you some money for that beer. Life changing stuff man
Being a beginner (3,4,5 chord campfire "guitarist") this was really helpful and understandable. I'm really happy and made my day crossing over to this! Now let's see how long it's going to take now that I learn the fretboard. Many thanks to You, Ricky!
I like any approach that helps identifies relationships between notes on different strings. Like the difference of a fourth between adjacent notes on strings 3, 4, 5 & 6. I also think of the relationship between the notes on the same fret for strings 1 and 3 as that of a minor third. Very useful for chords and fills. In addition to the open strings, everyone should know all the notes on the 6th string for power chords or barre chords. And the 1st is obviously identical to the 6th and everything repeats at the 12 fret. So out of 72 notes, there's probably only around 40 that people struggle with. Another approach is to keep a tuner on your headstock and play a game to find every C on the fretboard, then every F# and so on. After a while you can see the patterns.
Thanks for watching! Spooky you mentioned the 6th string (E string). I just did a live tutorial on that very topic. th-cam.com/video/E1J-iWn_5Lo/w-d-xo.html
As a primarily self-taught player, I cannot tell you how invaluable this lesson has been for me. I've been going through the process of memorizing the low E and A strings but wondering if there was maybe another way to help visualize the fretboard. Thanks!
Good morning, Ricky. Another excellent tutorial. I'm progressing through your booklet, following the tutorials in sequence, and they are fantastic. They're so straightforward, brimming with enthusiasm, and easy to follow and comprehend. I love it...
Thank you! I've been playing for years and never really learned the fretboard until now. That makes perfect sense - and I never saw the pattern of 4ths on the fretboard before!
I started playing guitar from scratch one month ago. I've sat with about five different friends and I've started reading three different books about understanding this concept. None of it sunk in. I turned to you tube and watched a few videos. Still, it didn't quite click. I was seriously starting to think I'm just brain-damaged and will never comprehend it. Then, here's your video- the one that made sense to me after everyone else was like greek to me.
Hey Krist! Thank you for your kind words, Stick around as I'm doing my best to be comprehensive in approaches to learning the fretboard. Alas, shooting and editing videos takes time and that's pretty scant these days
When I was writing down my system on how to memorize the notes on the fretboard, which is in fact a method invented by my husband, guitar teacher for 30 years and more, I couldn't imagine that so many musicians were looking for that sort of answer. I'm very happy to see that the subject is rather serious and I'm proud to contribute with the A.G.T.S. method, an infaillible way to read the fretboard top to bottom and the other way round...Teaching and learning guitar will never be the same anymore... my book is on sale on amazone, ebook and printed.. Have a look ! The notes on the guitar fretboard, Yves ARGANT.... thanks to this community united in the same target... help musicians discover always more of what their guitar has to offer... let's play music and get happily ahead
I found this video a few years ago when. I re-started playing guitar as an adult. It’s so helpful as others have pointed out. I watch it every few months as a reminder, and I love the way you say “learn the guitar fretboard dead easily.” It cracks me up. Thank you!
Absolutely and without doubt the best video on how to learn the fretboard, I was struggling and then after watching your video BOOM! Got it, this is so invaluable, I can’t thank you enough! Cheers
This is AWESOME. Every other video "teaches" you to learn the fretboard simply by counting the notes on each string one by one from the nut. This actually shows the relationship / pattern of the notes ACROSS the fretboard. Now I feel confident that I can find the strings that are near / adjacent to the note I'm playing, instead of just the note before or after on the same string. Genius!
As a beginner, this is extremely helpful for me. Thank you !! I'm starting to learn about EADGBE and CDEFGABC, and now starting to figure out the puzzle pieces. This is awesome. I need to put this all on paper !
Wow, I can’t believe I finally understand this, I followed along and stared taking notes 📝. I actually drew the fretboard too and cycle of 4th. It’s finally making sense. Now next thing is to tube my guitar and watch your other videos. Thanks a lot.
Spot on Gazza! It’s super easy when you think of it that way. Be careful when you cross the G to B strings at the 10th fret as both rules happen at the same time and you add 2 frets to maintain the BEADGCF sequence. Thanks for commenting and watching!
and add another fret for the F on the 10th fret on G string/3rd string so you'll have B on the 12th fret of B string. Cross from F to B = 1 fret, 3rd string to 2nd string = 1 fret.
Been playing 50 odd years and never progressed beyond the hardest cover song, never learned beyond the E string, this has opened up the fingerboard to me, thanks and also Bert weedon helped a little.
I remember the plec shape, like a house lol, I had exact same guitar but did not say Bert Weedon on it, came from boosey and hawkes and was prototype for his model (which was essentially a gibson 330/ epiphone casino type hollowbody) wish I still had it! de-armond dynasonics and bigby. Anyway thanks again, greetings from Pontefract.
i dont understand why you havent learned more? im not dissing you. And things are 100000 times easier now with the net. But why wouldnt someone who'd been playing more than a few years learn theory and especially know the fretboard? Again not dissing you. You made a Choice
I can't believe I never thought of this on my own. I've been playing a long time and only recently decided I should learn them all. When I read the write up and saw B (EADG) it all fell in place and I got it. Thank you so so much.
Just revisiting this video again. It really is superb. Perfectly uses what most guitarist already know (E, A & high E strings) as well as giving a stable theory platform for later use of intervals. Brilliantly constructed & great presentation. Thanks!
Have you checked out my circle of 3rds video? I’m guessing you’re learning how to sight read key signatures if you’ve been looking at sharps and flats. I have a lesson in the planner looking at why learning keys and key signatures is vital to being able to play any genre everywhere on the guitar. Thank you for watching and dropping a comment:)
Thank you, Ricky! I have owned a guitar for over two years but its only begun to make sense now. I can actually play something sensible now after watching your video!!
This is the clearest lesson I've seen on this I've been trying to learn this for months thankyou for such an amazing lesson I'm finally starting to understand the fretboard
What a gem of a tutorial 👏 thanks so much for the share. Loving the videos. As a former player who has stopped for over 20 years your tutorials are such an amazing and intuitive course. Not only that you have satisfied so many concepts and made learning theory logical and fun. Thank you again😊
Very, very, very, very excellent. Thank you. It can reinforce the indispensable circle of 4ths. Follow this: (fret0) Starting on B string: BE(string 1)E(string 6)ADG (fret1) CFFBbEbAb (fret2)DbGbGbBEA (fret3)DGGCFBb (fret4)EbAbAbDbGbB (fret5)EAADGC
This is very usefull, i've never realized about the 4ths. I speak spanish so I made up a sentence in spanish and works like a charm, thanks for your help
Wow, this was actually super enlightening. No video or lesson I've ever watched, explained exactly HOW the circle of 4ths is applied to the guitar fretboard. Amazing 👏
My memory's great. It's just... short. Dang! I was GIGGLING and LAUGHING with joy as I tried to "read" the sentence with the notes right on the guitar neck! I couldn't believe it worked even for a dense-brain like me. I've trying to find a way to "know" the notes on the guitar neck since I was 22 when I started playing the guitar by ear... and now I'm 60... and I can FINALLY do it! Thanks for the most wonderful lesson, Ricky! More power to you!
Absolutely enlightening! Thanks so much for this! I have been playing for over 20 years and this video has helped me more in 14 minutes than just about anything else I have tried! You are awesome sir!
Yes, I'll admit I'm a little awesome, but then so are YOU Mike! Thank you for taking the time to watch my silly video and even more for commenting. Much appreciated my friend :)
I knew I saw something when I was putting the notes on a fretboard diagram. I had already learned the notes across the strings. So I was gonna mesmerize the notes vertical down the odd frets but I saw pattern. Went and got my circle of fifths diagram. I learned the order of flats and sharps before so I saw the BEADGCF everywhere but a pattern. Now watching this video it all made sense and now see or visualize my fretboard so much better now. Everything is a pattern on the guitar u just have someone like you to point it out. Thank you and u got a new subscriber.

So for me its higher because i have to move higher on the fred Board. But maybe its just my wording. English is my second language. :) greetings
Same age and problem. Have stickers all over the fret board that are coming off tonight.
I feel like I owe you money! That was hands down, the best theory lesson I’ve ever been shown. Many many thanks.
Battle End And Down Goes Charlie's Father! AMAZING!
Simply amazing! I've watched hundreds of guitar videos on notes, scales, etc. I've been playing over 20 years and do pretty decent but I've had to learn the hard way (no scales or note names). This is by far the most informative video I've seen. Good job man! Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Ricky
The best break down of the fretboard EVER put out on social media! Das 😎 all! 😉👍🏻👏👏👏❤
So useful. Especially as I've just started bass after years on guitar- no pesky 3rd gap as no 5th string! Love it.
How much time did it take to play bass is it very different
Finally someone who doesn't plug their website book or lessons all video.
But actually he deserves more donations than those other guitar youtube guys

As others have said, no frills and fancy stuff, just a very clear and helpful explanation. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to post this.
Thank you for watching Gary. Means a tonne buddy :)
Great minds think alike ;) Thanks for commenting Adam. I appreciate you taking the time to do so :)
No you didn't
How far did you get after 4 years?
@David Wang It's a cheat...but don't tell anyone shhh!
Best way of describing / teaching the fretboard I've ever seen, really good stuff
Hey Kev. I appreciate your kind words. Thanks for watching. I'm thinking of doing a Fretboard Q&A at some point live next week!
Thank you! I've been playing for years and never really learned the fretboard until now. That makes perfect sense - and I never saw the pattern of 4ths on the fretboard before!
simplified, clear concise and easy to remember, this is honestly the most important thing anybody can learn on the guitar
Thanks
Thank you!
This is an example of the beauty of TH-cam!! Thank you!!
Hey Ryan. People like yourself who comment and appreciate the value of content help to keep TH-cam beautiful. Totally appreciated comment buddy
The You Tube
The first time I watched this, I didn't really understand what you were trying to do...now, months later, it makes perfect sense! THANK YOU!
@@rickysguitar I am so confused 😬
@@petrupasniciuc6138 Did you learn your E string first?
th-cam.com/video/bDZYmhIlS4A/w-d-xo.html
Im just leaning guitar at 60years young and this was so much easier to understand. Thanks mate.
Absolutely and without doubt the best video on how to learn the fretboard, I was struggling and then after watching your video BOOM! Got it, this is so invaluable, I can’t thank you enough! Cheers
Great to hear Derek! Thanks for watching. We've gotta keep rock'n'roll alive!
Ricky Comiskey absolutely my friend! Keep on rockin’
I wish I could share photos here. I understand the fretboard now. I use old fashioned pen and paper, and write it down. I'm learning !!
Wow, I can’t believe I finally understand this, I followed along and stared taking notes 📝. I actually drew the fretboard too and cycle of 4th. It’s finally making sense. Now next thing is to tube my guitar and watch your other videos. Thanks a lot.
Brilliant. So with the mnemonic BEADGCF there are 2 rules. If you jump from string 3 to 2 add 1 fret. If you cross from an F to a B add one fret.
Spot on Gazza! It’s super easy when you think of it that way. Be careful when you cross the G to B strings at the 10th fret as both rules happen at the same time and you add 2 frets to maintain the BEADGCF sequence.
Thanks for commenting and watching!
I discovered that. Got me first time but then I thought about the rules and they work !! Thanks for this tip. Been using it a lot recently !!
and add another fret for the F on the 10th fret on G string/3rd string so you'll have B on the 12th fret of B string. Cross from F to B = 1 fret, 3rd string to 2nd string = 1 fret.
There are so many helpful tricks to make sense of the fretboard. This is definitely one of the better ones.
Been playing 50 odd years and never progressed beyond the hardest cover song, never learned beyond the E string, this has opened up the fingerboard to me, thanks and also Bert weedon helped a little.
Thanks for commenting. Glad it helped. God bless Bert. I have one of his original instructional books which came with an awful plectrum!
WOW. Ive been playing for 19 years and I just learned the fretboard completely in 15 minutes. Wish I saw this 19 years ago. Thanks!
Ricky this is amazing - thank you so much for posting the video. It’s taught me more about the fretboard than I’ve learned in the past ten years
I can't believe I never thought of this on my own.
Thanks!
This is soooo good lesson that I have been ooking for and no TH-camrs bother to talk about. Makes more sense how guitar works.
Having recently learned the order of sharps and flats this trick instantly clicked for me. Awesome video man!

I'm a brand new guitarist and just would like to say, thank you, and that this video is exactly what I've needed and been looking for 👌👍😁🎸
Combining this with the method of picking any natural note and playing every instance of it on the fretboard 1-12 really sounds like a combo.
So easy, amasing how stunned I am to finally get the gist! Wow great job! Thank you so much! Finally understood fingerboard notes. Yay!
This is the clearest lesson I've seen on this I've been trying to learn this for months thankyou for such an amazing lesson I'm finally starting to understand the fretboard
Trust this: you're a going to live long🙌 you have simplified this puzzle like a 2+2 math. Awesome 👏👏👏
This is great. I've know about BEADGCF for a long time but never made the connections that are shown here!👍
Eyup Rick, thanks for this, much appreciated. Ricky
What a gem of a tutorial 👏 thanks so much for the share. Loving the videos. As a former player who has stopped for over 20 years your tutorials are such an amazing and intuitive course. Not only that you have satisfied so many concepts and made learning theory logical and fun. Thank you again😊

A million thanks. I got over a HUGE block because of your system! Cheers!
This is very usefull, i've never realized about the 4ths. I speak spanish so I made up a sentence in spanish and works like a charm, thanks for your help
Que es?
Wow, this was actually super enlightening. No video or lesson I've ever watched, explained exactly HOW the circle of 4ths is applied to the guitar fretboard. Amazing 👏
Gonna rewatch this video until it becomes ingrained into my dreams
Now watching this video it all made sense and now see or
visualize my fretboard so much better now. Everything is a pattern on the guitar u just have someone like you to point it out. Thank you and u got a new subscriber.
I'm learning music theory and guitar by myself with apps, youtube and google. I've been struggling with memorizing the fretboard. It's one of my bigger hurdles at this point. This is really helpful. Thank you.
Hey Shane! Stick at it and you’ll win! Thanks for watching and commenting :)
I never comment on youtube videos, however, been trying to play the guitar on and off for years (completely self-taught, no actual training so technical knowledge is non-existent) and this is the first time this has been explained to me and I actually got it. Thanks. If I could give you 100 thumbs up I would.
Ricky: This has been extremely helpful. I have played on and off (mostly off) for 20+ years and decided to get back into playing and become serious about learning everything I can. To echo most of the comments, I wish I had seen this 20 years ago. Thanks for sharing this. I am subscribing to your channel to see what else I can learn. Cheers!
Hey Jim! Thanks for the lovely comment, and thank you for taking the time to watch the video! AND thank you for subscribing. It really means a ton to me :)
This is just really good. I already know the notes on the fretboard well, but this just gives an instant relation between strings that is very useful.
