Taijiquan is a traditional physical practice characterized by relaxed, circular movements that works in concert with breath regulation and the cultivation of a righteous and neutral mind. Originating during the mid-seventeenth century in Wenxian County in the Henan Province of central China, the element is now practised throughout the country by people of all ages and by different ethnic groups. Taijiquan’s basic movements center upon wubu (five steps) and bafa (eight techniques) with a series of routines, exercises and tuishou (hand-pushing skills performed with a counterpart). Influenced by Daoist and Confucian thought and theories of traditional Chinese medicine, the element has developed into several schools (or styles) named after a clan or a master’s personal name. The element is passed down through clan-based transmission or the master-apprentice model. The latter relationship is established through the traditional ceremony of baishi. Taijiquan has also been incorporated into the formal education system. The element builds upon the yin and yang cycle and the cultural understanding of the unity of heaven and humanity. It has been disseminated through legends, proverbs and rituals, among other vehicles of expression. Safeguarding the element would increase its visibility and dialogue about the diverse ways Taijiquan is practised by different communities.
    Country(ies): China
Taijiquan was created in ancient China. Today it is practiced all over the world as an effective exercise for health ( 20% of the world's population does it)
    FOR THE ELDERLY
TaiChi is one of the best exercises for people over 60. It improves cardio fitness, muscle strength and flexibility in one simple system of exercises that do not stress the joints. TaiChi helps build bone marrow and connective tissues and is twice as good as all other balance exercises.
ThaiChi should be taken very seriously, i.e. if you start practicing it you should be consistent and practice it regularly so that the results are visible. TaiChi strengthens immunity, slows down the aging process,
lowers high blood pressure, reduces the effects of stress and depression, raises energy levels and affects overall mood changes. It is one of the most effective exercises for building balance and coordination in the world. TaiChi strengthens internal organs, tendons, muscles and connective tissues, and medical doctors around the world recommend it to their patients as an excellent addition to therapies and as a complete Anti Stress Program. Top businessmen, athletes, politicians, world leaders, royal families, all generations and all walks of life use it.
    FOR WOMEN
We also practiced on Jarun during our campaign May - the month for hiking!
TaiChi's ability to create a sense of self-confidence can be of great help to today's women, especially at work. Studies show that stress can be a major factor in bone loss even in young women. The daily release of stress achieved by practicing TaiChi provides a powerful preventive therapy for a long active life.
    FOR MEN
The goal of TaiChi is to create a balance between our dynamic (masculine/yang) side and the receptive (feminine/yin) side. Men and women have both qualities and TaiChi brings them into balance. TaiChi helps us to let go of negative thoughts, just as it teaches us to let go of tensions and fears.
For women, including those over 45, studies have shown that practicing Qigong and TaiChi increases estrogen levels. This is highly desirable because its reduction after menopause causes calcium loss from the bones and increases the risk of osteoporosis and heart disease. It is often thought that anorexia and bulimia are adult problems and most often start in adolescence. People with such problems are helped by strengthening their spirit and increasing their self-esteem. The self-confidence that practicing TaiChi builds and encourages can be a very effective way of discovering the strength within ourselves. Regular exercise can help us realize how much control we have over how the world affects us.
As our physical body relaxes and our movements become more fluid, we become more flexible both mentally and emotionally.
