Hey Honest Guide! I'm an American that actually lived in Brno, Czech Republic, for 10 years. Everytime I bring up Czech Republic to any of my American friends, I always suggest Brno over Prague if they have the time. You're right about everything on Brno, although it has been getting a little bit more touristy in the past few years. You definitely will hear not only Czech be spoken. A lot of English, Romanian, Slovak, Russian, etc.
In 2008 I spent a a couple weeks in Czech Republic. I definietly liked Brno over Prague, but I really liked Český Krumlov. Others have told me it can get crowded in peak tourist season, but when I was there is was just a lovely small town with a BIG castle.
@@ChrisLindsley I've been there a few times as well! Definitely a beautiful town, I remember going there for some sort of fall festival, but it was so long ago. Must've been like 2014/15 for me
I’d absolutely love to see another video like this bout other European destinations! It’d be great to also hear about destinations that you both think are even better to visit in the shoulder seasons (late Fall/Winter/early Spring)
PPPPeter: "Europe is boring" Honest Guides :"Europe is amazing." I agree with you guys, every european country is unique, and offers something for everybody.
It depends where you're from. If you're European, and over 30, you've probably seen a lot of various European countries and destinations (vacations, studies, and a few dozen weekend getaways), and they start to become predictable and a bit boring, while other continents are exotic. That's my case. But if you're American, Chinese, Brazilian etc., you might think that one short "Eurotrip" is enough and you've seen it all. While it's barely enough to cover the overhyped tourist traps.
Yes please! I would love to see more content of this sort. As a long term fan of your channel, and frequent traveler, I value your and Honza’s opinions!

As some other viewer has noted, that "Gaztelugatxeko Doniene" is spelled in Euskera (people from the Basque Country call their land Euskadi and the language Euskera, and the language is truly one of the most ancient languages in Europe not related to Latin). The official Spanish place name is equally difficult to pronounce: Gaztelugache (the "tx" is a common digraph in Euskera that usually translates to "ch" and is pronounced /tʃ/ ... like in charm or catch). But you can easily learn to do say it properly... if you follow the meaning of the word. Actually, the name comes from the word Gaztelu (castle) in Euskera, which is quite similar to "castillo" (castle) only G for C and Z for S which are common variations... so its easy to remember: Castle -> Castillo -> Gaztelu. Ok... that's the first part of the word. Now the appended "atx" (pronounced /atʃ/) which means rock, easy. Then the "ko" which is the genitive case (denotes a "place"). And, voilà, you get the full word in Euskera: Gaztelugtxeko. So the name would be "place of the castle of the rock"... The second word ("Doniene") means "Saint John" (from the word "Done" which in Euskera means "Saint" and "Iene" which means "Juan"). So... the translated name in normal Spanish would be something like: "San Juan del Castillo de la Peña"... Actually, the ancient name of the place in Latin was "Sancti Johannis de Castiello". But I like Gaztelugatxeko Doniene more... Doesn't it sound more fun? And it's the name that local people use too (no, nobody translates it to "dragon stone"). By the way... the pronunciation that the guy from Honest Guide gives to Bilbao is like in between the actual Spanish name and the actual Euskera name for the city. Bilbao in Spanish is pronounced with the stress in the second syllable, not in the first one ... This way: BilbAo. People from Euskadi say Bilbo (without the "a" in the spelling and stress in the first syllable)... and the pronunciation is easy to remember for those who have seen The Hobbit. And... yes! They are both (Gaztelugache and Bilbao) wonderful places to visit. But, by no means, the places that I'd chosen. We have many many places that really are worth paying the time to deviate from the more known touristic sites. Albarracín, in Teruel, Orbaneja del Castillo, in Burgos, Patones de Arriba, in Madrid, to name just a few... full routes to walk through or whole shires to wander about (away from the most crowded ones): Sierra de Cameros, La laguna negra y Picos de Urbión, Babia, Cazorla, Irati... Name a province, and you'll find an amazing small or middle size town to stroll or a beautiful landscape to enjoy that almost nobody is aware of (not even many Spaniards). Places that very few tourists visit, ever. Even Albacete, that most Spaniards regard as the ugliest province in Spain, has jewels hidden like the Fonts of Río Mundo near Riópar.
Historical Banat (which very briefly existed as an independent country right after WWI) is a region currently divided between Hungary, Romania and Serbia. There are many such examples in Europe. I certainly hope that it serves as a bridge between those three countries. BTW, kudos for pronouncing Cres and Rijeka perfectly.
Wonderful videos! We are going to Czech Republic next week for our son’s wedding in Semily! Looking forward to a few days in Prague but you’ve given some great other places to visit! Thank you!!
I recommend Tampere, Finland of which you also made a video earlier. Finland is peaceful, clean, people here are friendly and speak mostly good English. Welcome you all ❤
9:28 Gatzelugatxe is actually in the language of the basque region :) which is itself it's pretty ancient and not related to latin. Anyway i went there 2 years ago, it's really magnificient, but it also very tiring :)
There is a saying... no pain, no gain. You are right, the word Gatzelugatxeko is spelled like Euskalduns do... but the current Spanish official name is Gatzegulache ... which is, by no means, easier to pronounce (actually, it sounds the same). In normal Spanish we would say "Castillo de la Peña"... that most Spanish speakers will recognize. It's easier to remember and to learn to pronounce if you recall the origin of the name: Castillo (Gatzegu) and Peña (Atx)... and then the "San Juan" (Doniene)... all together "Gatzegulatxe Doniene". Easy, isn't it?
Some years ago I was visiting Brno, it was really nice. I stayed in Svitavy, a lovely small city (by car ~1h away from Brno). The city center looks really nice. Who is interested in modern history can see there the birth place of Oskar Schindler. I also enjoyed the nearby nature. I will for sure come back :)
My recommendation is to go anywhere in Slovenia! :) We have the Alps, the Adriatic sea, Caves, mountain lakes and rivers, lots of vineyards, beautiful architecture, clean nature, forests, etc!
I've just come from there. We were at the Triglav National Park. Amazing place to hike. And the capital, Liubliana (the loved one)... amazing. Small but vibrant. I endorse your recommendation.
I LOVE this episode! Anyways, here are my top 10 favorites in no order with much more needed to travel! Some of ours are similar! 1) San Sebastián, Spain 2) Mont Sain Michele, France 3) Mostar, Boznia Herzegovina 4) Istria region in Croatia 5) London (Don’t miss East London which includes Brick Lane and Camden) 6) Asturias Spain 7) Costa Brava Spain 8) Slovenia - Slovenian Alps and the capital Ljubljana! 9) Tallinn Estonia 10) Segovia, Spain
Next time you are in Croatia, you should also visit Istria, it's a region west of Cres and it's very close. It also has beautiful beaches, great cuisine, a colosseum, a lot of history, old towns, hiking trails... I'd be happy to show you around! Love you channel, you guys made me want to visit Prague.
In Croatia, I very liked Krk, but for those who travel without car, I recommend Pula, they have public transportation, it's big enough to shop and you can still find pretty wild beaches with clear sea. I was also in Poland several times and I always liked it, it's very underrated country, I also liked Baltic sea in Latvia, these countries are clean, you don't need car and it's not that expensive. There are also cool places in Portugal which I visited few years ago, but I recommend more like not to stay in Lisbon, some smaller cities look better.
I’m going to Prague for the second time on the 28th of august for a week to celebrate my 30th birthday .. I’ve been watching your videos for 6 years, I make it my mission to find you guys and shake your hand 😂
I love visiting Denmark 🇩🇰 ❤. There are so many cool places to see, the air is so fresh, the people are so kind. To name one place, I really enjoyed the Museum of the North Sea🌊😍
07:03 This shot is from the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro not Albania. The exact photo point is on the P1 national road (On Google Maps it is called Kotor Serpentine).
6:55 that mostly happens on weekends and holiday's but it's not uncommon in romania as other roads are just as busy(Brașov-București) Although i agree with the video and everything shown in it. I'd still recommend a visit. If you drive the full 100km road you have a very high chance to see a bear🐻 It's cool but be careful. Also to mention another similar road in romania is Transalpina. I'd say it's not as busy and it's also very impressive. Important to note is that both roads have parts(the highest attitude part) open only some parts of the year(mostly summer) because of the snow. So i recommend doing some research and of course there are a lot more to the country as any other country in Europe and the world so enjoy🙂
9:15 I distinctly remember standing at this exact spot back in the summer of 1975. We then went inside the church that is seen right beyond the landing area. It was a gorgeous, light-filled nearly all white interior. I have a beautiful photo of the interior and have never forgotten it.
It's good to know there are other people in this world who don't watch Game of Thrones. I gave it a shot, watched one episode, didn't like it, gave it another chance, watched a second one, still didn't like it. This being said, I loved both Prague and Brno, and I look forward to visiting again sometime.
@@ZonkerRoberts Unfortunately Brno Circuit currently has private owner, Grand Prix will not host races there until it's fixed (from what I heard) and current owner refuses to do anything about it due to 'financial struggles' and there is a blame shifting game between him and city government. Rich people usually buy these things and leave them to ruins refusing to take proper care.
Both all these amazing places and Miata you are driving (it must have been a blast on those switchbacks in Albania) show refined taste and good "nose", Janek! 😀
I absolutely agree on Brno. I was there multiple times, and it is a wonderful city. Full of life, art, but still with that authentic feeling. And Cres, too! Living in Italy, Croatia is a very popular destination for us, and I visited most of Istria and Dalmatia. Out of the many beautiful historic places, Cres remains a bit wilder, and as the island is so big, you can still find quiet spots. Unfortunately, with the arrival of Euro, prices have skyrocketed in Croatia. But going for less popular places is still affordable, providing you have some form of transportation.
This was a very interesting video, I put off watching it for 3 days because I subscribed to your channel for more information on Prague (originally) and the rest of the Czech Republic (when you started going further afield). This was wonderful and I think the only countries I have visited that you covered were Austria (many times) and the Italian Dolomites (only once). I look forward to visiting Denmark, Croatia and Iceland in the future but I fear I'm now too old!
Basque Country is incredible. Top tip, go to Donostia (San Sabastian) during cider season, February - April. Book a lunch at one of the many cider houses in that region and be ready for the most incredible experience and food. Zaleia is a great cider house.
I was planning to go to Innsbruck this winter to visit the city with the Christmas Markets magic, but also this period seems like a nice option to go,thank you for the tips! Oh,and also, the alpine part of Italy, especially Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol and Veneto regions, have plenty of those nice little lakes with beautiful water, and all of them are stunning,(just did a trip a month ago at Tenno lake, which is an hour away from where i live by car,and it's beautiful!) I think they are not too much touristic, compared for example with Lake Garda, which is too much packed with people in the summer, waaaay more enjoyable in the winter for locals like me 😂 Greetings from Verona 🇮🇹
@@LeandroTravaglia It really depends on which part of the country do you want to go,but if i had a suggestion...dont't focus exclusively on the most touristic places, there is simply so much to see,the smaller/less famous cities are the perfect example
As you guys know, Czechia alone has enough to make 10 great places. So many historic and interesting cities and towns together with lovely countryside for hiking. I really like the rustic life. From Liberec to Krumlov to Ostrava. I need to get back there! Now I should to suggest place(s) where you guys might not have gone, or if you have it might make your next video: Skopje (North Macedonia) combined with a scenic bus (or car) ride to Sofia (Bulgaria)
Hey Honest Guide! Thanks for the interesting tips I totally agree with you about Brno. I drove there from my home in Italy to visit my friend Petr and absolutely loved loved loved it! I had gone to Prague previously and it was beautiful but there was something special about Brno. I also agree with your assessment of Innsbruck , I never get tired of going there. It helps that I live less than a three-hour drive south of there down the Brennero Pass! I have a suggestion for you. Check out Postonja Caves in Slovenia. I would be interested to hear your thoughts.
I really like that you included in your video a place from my native country, Romania 🇷🇴 Even if I'm Romanian, I haven't visited the region of Banat. When I watched first time your videos, I was impressed about Prague 🇨🇿 and other cities in the Czech Republic. 😁 Obviously, I also love Croatia. That is an amazing country with kind people, rich culture and sandy beaches. 🇭🇷
Also i would recommend to visit morskie oko in Poland. There are amazing mountain landscapes and in the end of trip you'll meet a beautiful lake among huge high mountains, that's pretty similar to the 1st place of your top and maybe even better.
2:17 Krk is also very nice island in Croatia near Cres. I only went there last year, and so did Rijeka by the way. If you go to Krk you don't have to take a ferry, there is a bridge (Krčki most) between the mainland and the island.
"Gaztelugatxe" is not an spanish word. It is an basque word, a totally diferent language only spoken in the Basque Country that spreads across Spain and France :)
You are right, the word Gatzelugatxeko is spelled like Euskalduns do... but the current Spanish official name is Gatzegulache ... which is, by no means, easier to pronounce (actually, it sounds almost the same).
Hey Honest Guide, my wife and I will be visiting Prague in September, would love to meet y’all and have a beer. Maybe we could pay for a quick guide to local beer gardens and eateries. I know it’s all in your videos but having someone show you that you can trust and knows the language and rules makes you feel more comfortable.
I'd love to see more episodes like this. You should visit Wales, partly because it's so beautiful and partly to give Honza some more place names he can't pronounce. ;-)
Ahoy Janek and Honza. My recommendation is to have lunch or dinner at one of the restaurants on the first level of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Yes I know it's a tourist hotspot but the meals are quite good and it's a relaxing way to admire the construction and feel surrounded by the ironwork.
My top ten in no particular order: 1, Sarande and Ksamil in Albania, 2, München, Germany 3, Vierwaldstätter See and Innerschweiz, Switzerland 4, Gorenjska, Slovenia, 5, Massif Central, France, 6, Slapy (Nová Živohošť), Czech Republic, 7, village of Siurana in Catalunya, Spain, 8, Lahemaa national park, Estonia, 9, Mittelrhein valey and Mosel valley, Germany, 10, islands of Murano and Burano near Venice, Italy
Dubrovnik, Croatia. Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina. Kotor, Montenegro and Prague Czechia are my favourite places I’ve been to and as they are all Slavic the languages are quite similar. Which is good for me because I study Slavic languages and always been interested in Slavic culture and food. Greetings from England
I went on those same excursions from Dubrovnik. Memorable days, well worth it. Would go back to Montenegro, Kotor was great, didn't have time to climb that wall though!
@@ponr likewise, I didn’t have time to climb the wall either. I think I preferred Mostar though. Enjoyed swimming at Kravice Falls and loved the medieval city of Mostar and watching the daredevil divers jump from Mostar bridge. I went August last year for nine days

Both all these amazing places and Miata you are driving (it must have been a blast on those switchbacks in Albania) show refined taste and good "nose", Janek! 😀
Love how the places were not too mainstream and oddly specific!
This is truly honest guide, have been in Prague and then in Prague without tourists - Brno
I loved this episode! Thank you fellows!
Thanks guys for mentioning my Croatia!😊❤🇭🇷🇨🇿
In Brno, they certainly have a castle and cathedral, but also giant black phalus pretending to be an astronomical clock!
Honza needs to be in more episodes!
One of the best episodes. MOOORE PLEASE!
i love these kind of episodes do make more :)
Love this! More of these types of videos with themes! For example…”Honest Guides top ten favorite…”
This. Was. Awesome.!!!!!! Hope it's the first in a series.
Banat is not only in Romania. It is in Serbia also, and there are a few thousand Czechs living there.
serbia and also a small part of hungary
: még több ilyet, köszi
I absolutely loved this video and will definitely be using these recommendations in the coming years :D
Love Brno! Has a lot of similarities to Prague, but so much more affordable and more low key.
Awesome video. I Appreciate awesome the content y'all put out.
I was planning to go to Innsbruck this winter to visit the city with the Christmas Markets magic, but also this period seems like a nice option to go,thank you for the tips!
Oh,and also, the alpine part of Italy, especially Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol and Veneto regions, have plenty of those nice little lakes with beautiful water, and all of them are stunning,(just did a trip a month ago at Tenno lake, which is an hour away from where i live by car,and it's beautiful!)
I think they are not too much touristic, compared for example with Lake Garda, which is too much packed with people in the summer, waaaay more enjoyable in the winter for locals like me 😂
Greetings from Verona 🇮🇹
Me and My girlfriend are goint to Italy in November for the whole month! Any special tips?
@@LeandroTravaglia It really depends on which part of the country do you want to go,but if i had a suggestion...dont't focus exclusively on the most touristic places, there is simply so much to see,the smaller/less famous cities are the perfect example
Hones guides, thank you for a great video and a fascinating list! My favorite place it’s a Balos Beach on Crete island, Greece ❤
We love Brno too. Every two years we spend a couple weeks there to attend the Janacek Music Festival.
I love that the pier in Denmark is also wheelchair accessible
I really like that you included in your video a place from my native country, Romania 🇷🇴 Even if I'm Romanian, I haven't visited the region of Banat.
When I watched first time your videos, I was impressed about Prague 🇨🇿 and other cities in the Czech Republic. 😁
Obviously, I also love Croatia. That is an amazing country with kind people, rich culture and sandy beaches. 🇭🇷
Sandy beaches in Croatia? Well maybe in front of hotels, but from my experience, there are rather pebbles than sand. 🤔
Also i would recommend to visit morskie oko in Poland. There are amazing mountain landscapes and in the end of trip you'll meet a beautiful lake among huge high mountains, that's pretty similar to the 1st place of your top and maybe even better.
If you are going to Iceland, bring your own camp van or rent one. I did that this summer and I loved it :)
Loved it! And would like to see more of this kind of videos!
Thanks for sharing all this amazing places.
We love seeing you here in Croatia, our Czech brothers! Enjoy :)
Pls make a vid recommendation for Christmas vacation
I love this video already! You have great taste 👏🏽
Great tips thanks , please continue with more recommendations in Europe and top 10 coffee shops in Prague you recommend
As a croat, thanks for mentioning Cres!
Planning a trip to Europe in 5 years. Going to try and spend months all over. I like that none of these were big cities. I'd love more Europe videos.
Cph is the biggest city in Denmark, but okay... 😂
Dude I know you're awesome, but you're also a Miata owner, as a 2x former Miata owner as well, hell yeah brother!
Continue this into a series!
I agree on Innsbruck, it’s stunning!
@@kjdempsey Yeah I enjoyed that too, I remember the Mostar guide saying "The man on the bridge will ask you for €30 to jump off the bridge... But if you push him it's free" haha.
@@kjdempseyI'll be visiting Mostar and Sarajevo this month, looks beautiful and I can't wait
It's all Serbian, except Prague.
Great stuff dudes!
