Seeing someone actually play the game and explore for once is awesome. So many people just have guides and chat tutorials telling them 99% of what to do these days.
Not judging, but it genuinely personally baffles me what is enjoyable about just watching someone follow a guide for a first time play. I -love- seeing someone’s unique experience and journey with a game, including all their interpretations and experiments and choices moment to moment. Absolutely love Ryan’s playthroughs for this reason!
Dude, 1:10:40 - 1:11:45 . your commentary about the beauty and satisfaction of seeing the intentionality behind game design immediately being followed by you turning the corner mid speach, freezing, and "where the fuck is my chicken" had me in stitches. The timing could not have been more perfect. That being said... I know the pain of wrangling this specific chicken and you absolutely did it. Right on man!
That was my favourite part of this whole video; he gets into this proud and formal "yeah, I got this" monologue, and then as soon as he sees that the chicken is gone he gets a killer stare and starts raging, lol.
Gerudo Valley's music is my favorite in the entire series. As a kid, I used to pause the game in the valley and let the music play in my room while I was doing other things.
@BJGvideos lol! Talking everywhere my friend! I am more of a metal head so I know some great renditions of the songs on that genre too. I was being a nerd and specifically pointed to another game 🤓
I wouldn't worry about people being annoyed for things you don't immediately grasp. I can't speak for everyone, but what keeps me coming to your channel is the charm, the wholesome curiosity, and maybe even a little naivety. It's what makes it all work. This episode has so much to enjoy! - Classic slapstick comedy of chasing a cukoo around for a full half hour! - Buying into *definitely not a pyramid scheme* in town - First sample of what, for my tastes, is the best music in the game (and some of the best in the whole series) with the Gerudos - Terrifying flying knives in Hyrule Field This play-through is great, and BOY is there ever some great stuff still to come! Keep it up, Ryan!
The entire chicken part is the kind of nonsense comedy I usually expect to see in the animated short films before a Pixar movie. It's the same energy as the old man playing chess against himself before A Bug's Life.
1:25:27 - HELL YEA! Man, we all felt your frustration and determination in getting that heart piece. Definitely brings me back to my first time playing going through the EXACT same bullshit with the FREAKIN CHICKEN!
lmao at 1:11:10; Ryan has this big formal monologue about having figured out the "puzzle" with the chicken, and then is like "what the fuck?" when he cannot find it.
Ryan, in the nuclear navy we had a term: to nuke something is to overthink so gloriously bad (usually because we're so accustomed to thinking so thoroughly through a problem) that we both miss the obviously easy answer and sometimes choose an impossible solution. I think you may be prone to nuking the problem. At least you got the heart.
Watching these videos is SUCH a treat. I played this game a little when it first came out, but stuck to a couple gameplay functions I loved and ignored the actual story/objectives. Now that I’ve gotten into Zelda as an adult I’ve wondered what I missed with this game. I probably wouldn’t bother going back to play, myself, so getting to go through it vicariously through you is so great! I hope you enjoy making these as much as I enjoy watching them.
This was so fun watching you experiment and figure things out! I think more than being frustrated as a viewer, I really love you being so thorough cause it makes me excited for the rest of the play through knowing you’ll discover so much! 🥰🥰🥰 so many things seem second nature to those of us who have played this game since we were kids but a lot of it is confusing. You’re doing AWESOME. also never apologize for a long episode. I look forward to your episodes!!! Keep on being you 🥰

Ok, here is my story to make you feel better. I played Wind waker first in middle school because one of my best friends at the time basically said I could not call myself a gamer if I didn’t play Zelda. Really enjoyed it and played twilight princess shortly after. I didn’t play OoT until high school on the Wii’s virtual console. So, I am not someone who played the games when they first came out. Anyway, this is the point of the game where I got really lost. And I mean, really lost. After I beat the dodongo’s cavern, I could not figure out where to go next. I knew to use Saria’s song, but she doesn’t tell you where Zora’s domain is. In my defense, I walked past it so many times, but I always passed it because it just kind of blends into the hillside. I only managed to find it after talking with someone in my class who was also playing OoT for the first time. I told him that I couldn’t figure out where to go and he kind of laughed at me. But hey, I found Zora’s Domain after that! Still one of my favorite Zelda memories though.
To “throw the chicken” would make an excellent metaphor for messing up in a game. Also: you did amazing, Ryan! SO much fun to watch you tackle this challenge! Extremely satisfying to see you get there in the end
It's funny that you make the metroidvania comparison. Metroid was originally made with the idea of combining the exploration aspects of Zelda with the platforming and side scrolling nature of Mario, so if anything, metroidvanias have some Zelda in their ancestry.
"why the hell would we listen to Navi when Navi tells us where we need to go?" That right there, is the words of a true Legend of Zelda player in the making there 👍
So I've played this game countless times the past 20+ years. And I think you are correct in that the fence at Zora's river is meant to keep the chicken in place. I never realized this in all my time with the game. I have always done the throw onto ledge and regrab method, but regrabbing chickens is very finicky and easy to miss. That is crazy. It makes sense. That was smart thinking figuring that out. I think part of why the fence method is not working for you is because you sit and watch it for a while and the longer it's there the more time it has to run away.
Interesting I always thought that little fence was there to be used as a shortcut to jump on it then link can easily leap to the large fence and climb over if you needed to backtrack without floating all the way downstream haha. But chicken trapping makes sense too 😂
48:00 - Actually? I was more concerned that you forgot, but again you have an infant daughter and being a new parent is exhausting. ♥ Take care of yourself, Ryan!
And so did young Ryan, hero-to-be of Hyrule, set forth on the task of obtaining a heart piece at the river. Covered in sweat and soaked in the river, his labors continued as he fought cuccoos, octoroks, fences, and the droning of owls stubbornly holding to his task. For 5 days and 5 nights, with no food or rest, did he endeavor before his goal was finally laid bare in his vision. The final steps of his journey, the final leap, came before him at last. He dropped on top of his goal as the crowing signaled the morning of the sixth day. His journey was complete. Weary, he began his next journey as life, in the form of an octorok of the river, bashed him in the face over and over until finally it too was vanquished.
I think the keaton mask is meant to be a fox of some kind (compared that face with Redd from Animal Crossing) but yeah the yellow with black tipped ears does give it a very Pikachu look.
Oh my god there is so many awesome things in this game that we will get to see him experience for the first time and a can't wait! Love the series man. Also finally the valley song!!!!!! The remix version from super smash bros. Ultimate is chef kiss
@BJGvideos haha! I don't remember but I will give it a listen for sure. Also if I am not mistaken it was not a single guy doing the music in smash but multiple composers. Not 100% but now I have to check on that!
I wasn’t frustrated watching. I was laughing lol. Just waited until you remembered the song lol. And I’m glad you tried the sun song on the plant. It doesn’t work, but it makes so much sense! It Should do something. And even though that didn’t work, songs do some times have hidden uses. And that heart piece has frustrated MANY Zelda fans over the years lol
Trying to do something that SHOULD make sense but the game doesn't accept is always so frustrating because you don't know if the game doesn't let you or if you're just not doing it right.
@ Yup. Ryan isn’t the only person who has done things that would have worked, but the aim or execution was off. Then you spend untold time backtracking because you thought that can’t be it
It makes sense that the king was like "wtf, I saw a kid peeping through the window with Zelda. How tf did he get in here?!?!" And reorganized the guards ... after maybe firing a few.
episode where ryan forgets the function of every song he knows
I was coming on here to make that exact comment lol
Just the side effect of streaming multiple games at once. 😢
Yes! I was thinking just this lol
Well, not EVERY song. Zelda’s lullaby is his favorite
“It feels crazy that they would make you go back to the lost woods to speak with Saria every time…” 😂🤣😂🤣 love it so much
Ryan’s constantly waffling back and forth between under and over estimating the game’s capabilities is giving me whiplash.
36:15 Ryan's bought into the mask pyramid scheme, I see he's met with a terrible fate.
Oh man, I really hope he plays MM next.
