    Fun fact: According to a legend, raspberries were originally white. The nymph Ida pricked her finger while picking berries for the crying infant Jupiter, and raspberries have since been tinged red with her blood.

    Awesome video as always. The upside down pot to prevent evaporation of the water is really clever. The gases pushed the water out, I see, but why did the water level fluctuate back and forth? Did you fill the plate with water and some got sucked back in?

    • @PhotoOwl
      @PhotoOwl  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1016

      Thank you! Honestly, I'm also wondering about that, I'm not sure. I tried to keep the tempereature about the same the whole time, but there were some fluctuation in temperature, it's probably that. And yes, when it water level increased then it sucked water in from the plate. Another idea, some of the gas that got released from the fruits also must have been absorbed by the water. That also could have influenced the water level.

    Dunno if you'll see this comment, but with regards to the odor: if you're committing to interacting with lots of fermented products you may find a respirator mask to be a worthwhile investment. 3m's secureclick series is a pretty solid entry-level device, but anything that fits you and fits a combination particulate filter and organic vapor cartridge will protect you from mold spores, foul odors, and other contaminants. Organic Vapor cartridges work by dint of activated charcoal, which has a limited lifespan as it reacts with contaminants in the air, but you can significantly improve their lifespan by keeping them sealed in an airtight container between uses, allowing you to get many months of use out of a single filter cartridge or set of cartridges. Cheers.

    • @vedantsridhar8378
      @vedantsridhar8378 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't know if he looked at your comment or not, but now he is wearing a respirator mask, because he found the smell of fruit submerged in water to be too bad to be tolerable. That's what he said when he replied to me. So thanks for giving this tip, because even if encountering bad smell is part of his job, feeling like throwing up must never happen. Health is always first priority before work, that's what my teacher keeps telling me!

    • @mirjanbouma
      @mirjanbouma 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it's the opposite of slowmo? Like, for slow motion you needs more frames per second than normal, then play it on regular frame speed so the video is slowed down. What Owl does is the opposite, they only need a few frames per hour, which (I think) is much easier, as your equipment doesn't need to be extra fast. Perhaps something with timed intervals? Or maybe keep it running and edit it so speed it up

    If it wasn't for the mold and the old, stagnant water, I would be really curious what they taste like at that point. Raspberries get their flavor from a chemical called ethyl formate. Ethyl formate is quite insoluble in water so it wouldn't be extracted very efficiently by the water soak. However, the sense of taste comes from more than just chemicals. Your perception of something is enough to change your experience with how it tastes, and with the berries being stripped of the bright red you expect to see, the experience of actually eating them could be more interesting than you expect. Or maybe they'd just taste like soggy, wet, watered down berries. Who knows.

    When you said at the end you had to set it down because the smell almost made you puke-I realized that is almost exactly like what I could smell when I had Covid; and for along time afterward, I would smell what I could only describe as “fermented plums” I still smell it sometimes, for hours up to days at a time.

    It’s incredible how the bacteria only festered on the outside in the air and the inside remained comparatively sterile even when the water was sucked in and out .

    • @SasvanGulik
      @SasvanGulik 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, i think what basically happened is just regular fermentation
      all fruits and veggies and basically everything everywhere has some type of lactic acid bacteria on it, that when u leave it to work will decompose the sugars inside into acid and CO2 on it. The big bubble forming at the top is prolly CO2 only cuz of the closed off vessel, and that's an anaerobic environment, it's not hospitable to life
      so like, seeing the raspberries turn pale is I think purely cuz of fermentation and acid, and eventually all the sugars were eaten up by the bacteria and they started to sink :|
      what a world we live in

    • @yodamaster445
      @yodamaster445 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, inside there was anaerobic bacteria, which produced gas (as you can see starting at day 3/4) that pushed out the water that contains sugar and other compounds, which got decomposed aerobically outside

      Damn, I'm jealous of you guys, that's pretty appetizing and good of a school lunch, I dream to come to your school! My school lunch seems to be made of a million year old rotten corpse taken from the backrooms.
      Just kidding, and no offense to my school lunch which actually tastes amazing, sometimes so amazing that even on days when my class has no lessons, I still actively go to the school to eat the lunch itself! In school, I eat the German delicacy while at home, i eat the Indian food cooked by my Indian father, which tastes amazing too, though it doesn't contain meat (he's a vegetarian) so to get meat, I need to have lunch outside home, and the cheapest option is at school.
