Those of us with the early Porsche PCM fitted to our 996s will know the infotainment system is ancient - so much so its role is redundant in our modern classic 911. However, if like me you use your Porsche 996 Carrera daily, connectivity to the modern world is important: wether it's using maps and navigation, communicating with friends, streaming music or listening to your favourite podcasts (mine is Road to Redline). Luckily, Porsche Classic has come up with a properly genius product that can give us all this modern-day connectivity within our modern classic, and I've been keen to test it out for some time.
It's called PCCM+ (Porsche Communication Management Plus), and takes the single-DIN PCCM unit originally made available for air-cooled classics last year, reinventing it in double-DIN format especially for the 996. But is it any good?
In this video, I get PCCM+ installed in my 996.1 Carrera and, after a few days getting used to all its new features, present you the rundown of what it's like to live with. This is the most in-depth review you'll find of Porsche PCCM+ anywhere on the internet, so I hope it suitably shows you exactly what this new infotainment system is like and answers any questions you may have about it. If you've any further questions of course, pop them in the comments below and I'll endeavour to get back to you.

I’ve had the unit installed in my 2002 996 Targa. The installer Auto Umbau, put it in fully integrated with no wires surface mounted at all. Not only that the USB unit is installed in the glove box out of the way, with a blue tooth dongle, I even connect to AppleCar Play with no wires. Quite an improvement on your install Lee. Thanks as always for the review though it reinforced my buying decision!

Good on Porsche for doing this and continuing to support their older cars. I wanted to replace my 997.1 PCM but didn’t want the cheap Chinese options or hard work in fitting a iPad in the double din unit. Unfortunately I sold the 997 now but still use the iPad I purchased but never installed.

Thanks for this review. I’m waiting for the 987 version apparently due next year - hopefully by then CarPlay will be wireless. I have been tempted by aftermarket but held off because I like the way the car / dash integrates with PCM3. Also tempting is the £500 kit which can add (wireless!) CarPlay to your existing PCM3 - that might be a better compromise.

Thanks for the detailed review. I've been on the fence about this since the price point is a bit high compared to non-OEM units. I do like how you mounted the USB/AUX box to the side, it bugs me to see that whole storage bin basically negated by having it right in the middle.

Great review, thanks. Was getting all enthused until you got to the price bit at the end... for a daily driver I see the benefit, but my 996.2 C2 manual is an occasional driver for driving pleasure mostly, so all the features of PCCM Plus, while desirable, are not essential. I have been waiting for this review, and much as I’d like to remove the lower center console for leg comfort, it would then make this upgrade more difficult/unviable and yes I suspect used market would appreciate this mod. Well, I want my engine and transmission mounts done along with other rear bushings done before this despite my CD selection buttons not performing reliably.

  • @brettcooper9032

Great review - 100% agree with the comments and conclusions.
Had this unit fitted in my C4S 5 weeks ago. Delighted. Not inexpensive, but compared to a sensible higher end after market unit - particularly if you have the optical BOSE system - by the time you’ve added adapters, converters ... and fascias (and they all do look after market) ... the added cost is more than justified.
Looks great. Sounds great. And looks, as it is, OEM.
I can’t see anyone being disappointed with one of these.

      Welcome Lee
A few things to add that might help some of your subscribers.
Saw a question somewhere about whether the Nav info still appears in the instrument cluster. Mine replaced a PCM 2 and does but only on the native PCCM+ SatNav and not with any of the Apple CarPlay apps - Maps, Waze, Google. So as expected.
Had it fitted by Porsche Portsmouth who did a great job. The all in was about £2k with the storage tray replacing the CD trays. Felt reasonable. Considered a self install but apparently a lot of coding. Better to have peace of mind knowing that Porsche have done the work.
Was particularly impressed that the DAB and GPS antennae in mine are out of sight - I think behind the plastic scuttle under the widescreen. Again very neat and work fine.
I have the USB box mounted further back in the storage tray and like it being a bit more concealed. Bought a short (20cm) Lightning cable with a 90° USB connector - now very neat!
OEM microphone is, apparently, the wrong gain. The mounting on top of the steering column housing is discrete and well positioned for voice pick up.
Sound quality is more than adequate linked to the BOSE system. For me not really any point in looking for an improvement over this as standard with the road and engine noise. I’d rather listen to the exhaust note most of the time! That said, it is loud and clear enough to drown out both!
      I am very happy!
When’s the next 996 meet? Hoping to be there.

I see at the end you predicted there would be something available for 997 owners soon. Which is great. In the meantime there is a nice aftermarket product for 997 owners which integrates a modern cell phone (both cellular and Bluetooth audio) into the existing 997 PCM unit. It goes by various names such as "L.A. Power" and "Mr. 12 Volt". Works really well and very inexpensive to buy (around $140 USD). It lets you keep your existing 997 audio hardware but gives you most modern conveniences such as listening to music on your phone or via USB stick. Can be found on Amazon and eBay.

Also, worth noting, if you are only looking for music/podcasts streaming, there's a gsm module you can replace in your PCM1 which adds that bluetooth functionality to it. It retains the whole look'n'feel (including the board computer, cd changer, etc.) and it is also cheaper. I use that every drive.

The sound for the android auto and built in navigation is really quiet and it seems to be related to the sound of the music as in, you can't turn the volume for the nav up without turning up the volume of the music. I have to have the music on full blast to hear the nav. I have been in the settings you can change certain things to volume -5 or +5 and have put everything to -5 except the input for the phone and that hasn't really changed anything. Is there anything I can do as sometimes if I'm on an early Sunday morning drive to a car show or something, I don't want the music on full blast to be able to hear the navigation prompts.

Great review - I'd love to see something available for the 987.2 that retains compatibility with sport chrono for mapping a track lap on a blank screen and allowing lap times to be saved and compared against a chosen baseline lap from your own saved timings. I'd love my PCM3 to be usable again! I'm glad you did this and glad that there is an OEM option that exits - but £2.2k people!!!!!! £2,200 of your hard earned for this device ? Granted it includes OPC fitting (if I understood correctly) at 3.5 hours which is worth approx £600 inc vat, but it is way too expensive. I'd use my PCGB discount, fit it myself and probably manage to get the price nearer to £1,450 which is still too much. The dash mounted aerial thing could surely be secured directly under the dash top whilst the guts are out on the passenger side floor (retro fit on older Golf models would see it mounted on the steel brace immediately under the dash top without detriment to performance of the Nav). I'd also mount the ports elsewhere so that they are hidden. It's a lot of cash for some knobs and a bit of Porsche script in my eyes. There is no doubting that it looks right, fits well and does the job, but I still can't get over the cost. £800 + fitting was my guestimate at the start of the video and at that price they'd have a queue rivalling that of a COVID test centre. • @GarthLovesTRAVEL

I had a Macan loaner when my 4S was being serviced for about two weeks and the one thing I missed about that car was the infotainment system and the apple car play. This new system for the 996 is pretty much the same as the one i had in the 2019 macan. I hear a lot of people saying why pay the premium when there are aftermarket options that are cheaper. In my opinion the aftermarket units just look so cheap no matter which brand you get. The graphics are horrible and the cheap plastics just look terrible to me when mounted in the console. This is why I never upgraded to any of those units. I think this system makes perfect sense no matter how much money it cost. It stays true to the interior design and looks great with the porsche functionality.

Good video, totally agree with you, brilliant unit, fitted one myself a few months back to my 4S, very easy install, few different things to your set up though, put the media box out of the way in the glove compartment, GPS antenna hidden under the alarm light cover on top of the dash and centralised the microphone on the steering column, also had the OBC enabled to show next turn on the instrument binnacle when using built in nav.

£2.2k is very expensive if you choose to go down the full OPC supply & fit route. It can be done much cheaper. I purchased (with discount) from OPC & used a non OPC pro audio fitter to fit..I would argue that if you can find a good one they are better than the OPC guys who don't in reality do much audio work. My guy is a Boxster owner & PCGB member so knows his Porsches. All in, mine cost me £1.6k incl the maps SD card & the extra Bose cable to 'deamp' the signal into the Bose amp.

That’s the GPS antenna, I managed to it get tucked out of the way under the alarm light cover on the top of the dash, the antenna in the windscreen is used for the tuner, the original FM/AM signal amplifier needs to be removed, it then gets put through a splitter and amplifier supplied with the unit to enable DAB.
