another interesting fact about this: is that in the shadow world ryujis leg is actually healed. you can notice this during the cutscene when you beat kamoshidas Palace and he running just fine until it starts to collapse. showing one of the positive effects the shadow world has on him. which also may be the reasons he's the happiest out of all the phantom thieves and is so gun ho whenever it comes to going to mementos

its not that his leg is healed. the suit actually is like a part of a persona. and they are wearing them. letting them do incredible acrobatics despite never done so before. so when transformed his bad leg gets compensated.
Damn, I never noticed that. But it’s true. Kamoshida broke Ryuji’s leg at the femur which is even visible on his Persona Captain Kidd with the bandage on his right upper thigh. That is an insane level of detail they didn’t have to put in but they went out of their way to do it anyway. It makes perfect sense that Ryuji walks and runs like that.
That’s why I like Royal. We do get some closure to his leg injury by the fact he decides to go to physical therapy. I hope for the kids who dealt with the ppl Kamoshida is based off of, are able to recover to some extent as well. The fact that despite P5 highlighting this stuff, it STILL goes on is horrible. But I’m glad it’s brought more attention to a real life problem and that more ppl r being caught and kids are utilizing their phones and recording evidence to finally get these ppl punishment.

Another similar detail is that in his idle animation he puts pressure on one leg while putting his hand over that leg in his pocket to put more support into his good leg. Honestly small details like these make the persona games. Hell the fact you can find Haru asking permission to use the roof for her garden on the way to meeting Ryuji on the roof for the first time or often see other confidants in the background before you ever meet them in Royal is so cool. It's these little details that make it worth the upgrade.
The femur is the hardest bone to break in the body--you have to have intention to break it... But once it breaks it can really fuck that leg up for life.

His bad leg is supposed to be a "peg leg" for his pirate theme. Atlus really put a lot of thought into Ryuji but I hate that they have punching bag characters such as Yoskue and Junpei.
To be fair, it's never really gotten this bad. With Junpei, it was really only Yukari that talked to him all mean. Yosuke had it worse than the third game, but made it for it by essentially being the leader of the group.

Ryuji says that he's planning on leaving Shujin and finish his high school education at another school closer to a physical therapy clinic to continue to work on his leg.

As someone who suffered a knee injury, I'm got all too familiar with having to 'gallop' like a horse when having to run. The fact that this detail of apart of Ryuji's character is really special.

Yup. But no matter how bad his condition is, he have the most best qualities. He's extremely loyal friend. If something happens, he'll come running. Even if his right leg have problems after the accedent, he's still going forward. He's having a loving mother, who is also not rotten, like the most of the adults. Ryuji will be willing to sacrafice himself, like in Royal, a cutscene where he protects Joker in Maruki's palace. Such sad detail only proves, that Ryuji is may not smart, and easy thinking guy. But he have most best qualities, more than anyone. And he's the only one who met the Joker, and not even blackmails, like the most of the casts. He just thought that Joker might be one of the Kamoshida's dogs, and apologised for misunderstanding. Ryuji is a true friend you can wish for.
Ryuji has the best quality of publicly announcing his phantom thieves involvement and getting them in trouble several times. But I do like how they tried to fix this character in the third semester.

It's not just in Royal. If you have the gang walking, Ryuji's walking animation looks a little off. Even disregarding his delinquent stance. Though it is much more easy to notice when here, when you mute the music and listen to his shoes hit the floor.
And if he does too much it, he trips. According to the wiki (even though I know wikis can't be trusted due to editing and stuff), due to his injury, he walks and runs with a slight limp, and OCCASIONALLY TRIPS if he overexerts himself.
Watch the cutscene for the escape from shido's palace. After Ryuji jumps across the water to get to the other side of the ship he's crouched down. Before he starts running again you can see he punches his right leg. That indicates that he noticed the injury acting up.
I think the attention to detail was nice with his idle battle pose, I thought it was hunched over tough guy act but he's stablizing his one knee as he puts his hand on it.
Another detail is I love Captain Kidd’s peg leg is his bum leg, which also reinforces how it’s become harder to walk on and use since it was broken. To Ryuji, it’s like it was removed entirely with how it effects his walking and body. 😢
Those footsteps are most likely referring to his leg injury. From what I’ve heard, Kamoshida broke Ryuji’s neck of the femur (thigh/upper leg bone). So you can imagine and understand why he stands with that slouching pose and that he hasn’t ran in a while.😢🦵🏻🦴 Edit: Grammar check. :P

I really hate JUST how much Ryuji took back seat to Ann in the palace, not to undermine Ann’s suffering I’m well aware it’s real, but after the first two seconds it just became all about her and ryuji never got any real payback like Ann did, she was the one who got to decide wether or not to kill him, she is the one everyone and their mother apologizes to, ryuji was also made an outcast, not even by the track team alone and they really did him dirty in that department, in my opinion
I think with Ann,the payback was more personal. Yes,Ryuji had his leg broken,but Ann's friend Shido had to endure being a toy for that pedo. And Ann had to go along with liking that scumbag to secure her spot on the team.

Ann's is more psychological,with her friend being beaten and taken against her will. Ann had her own trauma due to her looks. Japan,on the whole,is pretty homogeneous (people of one race).
Im still baffled that Kamoshida got scott free from that, regardless if it was "self defense", breaking your student leg for whats basically a punch and some shoving around is crazy, is not that Ryuji had a weapon or something I think the game should focused way more on that with Ryuji but i guess the Kamoshida hate had to get more focus from Ann because of Shiho
that's actually so depressing I had a really active/sporty friend as a kid who had ear issues that affected his balance, he went from being the fastest runner in our school to the kid who got told off by teachers every time he moved faster than walking speed (because they knew it was dangerous for him to run around on cement, moreso than for other kids)
I mean, his exact words were "Running here's a bitch!" implying that the poor guy has to get the heck out of there as fast as possible even with his leg problem.

if i just pretend that the akihabara rape/drag scene and the post-shido palace scene didn’t happen, i love all the moments that ryuji gets. he’s able to completely recognise when he got too obsessed with popularity, and when he phones protag to apologise for losing his temper. and of course the shido palace moment is probably my favourite moment in the game. then of course him being the first to block cendrillon’s attack was awesome too.
basically when u first go to akiba w/ ryuji two stereotype gay men approach u two (u always see these guys in the beach scene + as npcs in akiba) and they keep trying to drag ryuji away, eventually joker jhust leaves him with them and its implied something sexual will happen if u leave him with them. in royal its changed so theyre only dragging him away to put him in drag

I wish people would appreciate Ryuji more, not out of pity but because he went through so much stuff and still try to stay neutral despite all the undeserved hate and bullying he put up with throughout his years of school. Not to mention, all the stuff he did for the group. I believe he is the most caring of the PT, yet was never rewarded for his actions, only punished. He may be not the brightest, but give him a break. Yet people put Makoto or Akechi above him :(

Ryuji is one of my favorite party members (Besides Akechi, Morgana, Yusuke, and Futaba), so learning that Ryuji has a limp from when Kamoshida broke his right leg just makes me wanna hate Kamoshida even more than I do, and I already hate him with every fiber of my being. Though his boss fight was alright, not gonna lie. I have the same opinion with Madarame as well. I absolutely hate his guts and his confession after his change of heart was absolutely hilarious to me when I saw it for the first time. That's how much I hated both of them. Hated his boss fight as well. It was frustratingly annoying and difficult.
Ryuji has always been a comfort character for me for this exact reason. I see a lot of myself in him. In middle school I had an awful PE teacher who constantly disregarded people when they couldn’t take anymore of whatever we were doing that day and was always smug about her position. One day I tripped and sprained my ankle pretty bad, so I had to wear a boot to get around. Being 12 I really didn’t like wearing it and didn’t understand the importance of it, so one day I went to school without it on, and despite my doctor telling them I couldn’t run for a few weeks, my teacher saw this and demanded I go do a mile run if I didn’t need to wear my boot anymore. I pleaded with her multiple times to not make me, because I knew if I just said no I’d get in trouble. She didn’t back down and made me run. Miraculously I was able to finish it, but that ended up being my ankles last hoorah. After the adrenaline wore off I ended up having to go to the hospital again and found out my ankle was busted. Chronically broken. I’m nearly 20 now and I’ll never be able to run or dance again unless I get surgery, which I can’t afford. As someone who loved theater it completely jacked my involvement and in my social life a lot of people can’t seem to understand that even though I can walk, I’m still partially disabled. And funnily enough… the year my ankle was messed up was the same year that Persona 5 came out. I played it eventually and once I learned about Ryuji’s story it made me cry because by that point I’d realized that because of the cruelty of my teacher the trajectory of my life was totally flipped around. I also just relate to a lot of other things about him. I never did well in school and was bullied by both my teachers and my peers, which made me resentful. Not to mention, I even share the same birthday with Ryuji! Seeing him grow as a character and be empowered despite everything that’s happened to him was really important for me when I was younger, and even still I sometimes think back on persona 5 and smile because of how uplifting Ryuji was for me.

PLUS, the student ONLY apologized to Ann whereas Ryuji still carries the stigma of assaulting Kamoshida instead of the truth. THAT REALLY PISSED ME OFF. Ryuji deserves something too.

It's just generally treated as more of a slap on the wrist in that situation. Well, so long as you don't have a history of violence because at that point you need to do something about it. What Kamoshida did in return exceeds self-defense however. Ryuji still got the track team disbanded for roughly a year because he hit Kamoshida. That fact doesn't change because Kamoshida's a walking D, and confessed to his crimes. The reason for disbanding it doesn't stand anymore because it was instigated assault, and that's why you see it reinstated, but everyone on the team still lost the track team for a year. How long did they have to look to find a place to train? Plus how much time and/or money they now had to devote to a trainer. Yeah, Ryuji 'lost' (not really. While the injury is serious, with physical therapy and adaptive training one can actually become an even better runner than before) his future, but he also took everyone else's because with that missing year they won't be able to get scholarship's either. And you want them apologize for being rightfully mad?

His walking and running animations are probably designed to show him as a track star, everyone else's are in sync but they probably didn't want to create an entirely new set of instructions for something most will never see anyway
You can actually also see it when he’s not moving too. If you look you see he’s got both feet pointing outwards instead of straight ahead. It might not actually be because of his injury, but it would make sense

Yeah I always thought Ryuji has low speed, high health, Ann has low health, Makoto has balanced stats because she works out regularly and is also studious so she has smarts and Yusuke has low health because he doesn't get enough food.

It's not just in Royal. If you have the gang walking, Ryuji's walking animation looks a little off. Even disregarding his delinquent stance. Though it is much more easy to notice when here, when you mute the music and listen to his shoes hit the floor.

And if he does too much it, he trips. According to the wiki (even though I know wikis can't be trusted due to editing and stuff), due to his injury, he walks and runs with a slight limp, and OCCASIONALLY TRIPS if he overexerts himself.
The trip may refer to the scene in Shido's palace but it would be interesting if they include that in the running animation

Watch the cutscene for the escape from shido's palace. After Ryuji jumps across the water to get to the other side of the ship he's crouched down. Before he starts running again you can see he punches his right leg. That indicates that he noticed the injury acting up.

I think the attention to detail was nice with his idle battle pose, I thought it was hunched over tough guy act but he's stablizing his one knee as he puts his hand on it.
Another detail is I love Captain Kidd’s peg leg is his bum leg, which also reinforces how it’s become harder to walk on and use since it was broken. To Ryuji, it’s like it was removed entirely with how it effects his walking and body. 😢
A neat detail is that ryuji having one broken leg is similar to the trope of pirates having a peg leg, which makes sense given ryuji's pirate motif
Those footsteps are most likely referring to his leg injury. From what I’ve heard, Kamoshida broke Ryuji’s neck of the femur (thigh/upper leg bone). So you can imagine and understand why he stands with that slouching pose and that he hasn’t ran in a while.😢🦵🏻🦴

Every phantom thief has their nemesis, and the game's narrative enforces that, everyone got saved, and Kamoshida is considered Ann's enemy, which once again, fair, the physicological damages Kamoshida did on her cant be expressed, but it implies Ryuji doesnt got an enemy? What would be the problem with just making someone be the bad guy of 2 people? Whenever the phantom thieves talk about the obstacles they overcame, Haru brings up Okumura, Makoto brings up Kaneshiro, Yusuke brings Madarame, Ann brings up Kamoshida, and Ryuji... Nobody, almost like he didnt just got a literal permanent injury that will never fully heal and will hurt for the rest of his life, only becoming less hurtful with therapy over the years but still never going away, Im not joking, the femur may be the strongest bone in the body, but the moment it actually breaks, it's VERY serious, firstly because the injury can be lethal if not treated immediately (yup, Kamoshida was about to catch a body directly, *actual homicide* for his list of crimes, no more Skull, if Ryuji hadnt screamed the moment he broke his leg bro would be 6 foot underground rn), and second bc his career is done, that kind of injury can retire someone, the scumbag may have had a change of heart and apologized but Ryuji's dream is as good as gone before it even started

that's actually so depressing I had a really active/sporty friend as a kid who had ear issues that affected his balance, he went from being the fastest runner in our school to the kid who got told off by teachers every time he moved faster than walking speed (because they knew it was dangerous for him to run around on cement, moreso than for other kids)
I swear Atlus is adding these little details and easter eggs in real time. The attention to detail and love poured into this game is insane.

if i just pretend that the akihabara rape/drag scene and the post-shido palace scene didn’t happen, i love all the moments that ryuji gets. he’s able to completely recognise when he got too obsessed with popularity, and when he phones protag to apologise for losing his temper. and of course the shido palace moment is probably my favourite moment in the game. then of course him being the first to block cendrillon’s attack was awesome too.

I wish people would appreciate Ryuji more, not out of pity but because he went through so much stuff and still try to stay neutral despite all the undeserved hate and bullying he put up with throughout his years of school. Not to mention, all the stuff he did for the group. I believe he is the most caring of the PT, yet was never rewarded for his actions, only punished. He may be not the brightest, but give him a break. Yet people put Makoto or Akechi above him :(

I love little attention to details like this. I also have a really bad leg. So running and walking would put a strain on my knee. I run kinda similar to Ryuji 😭
Ryuji is one of my favorite party members (Besides Akechi, Morgana, Yusuke, and Futaba), so learning that Ryuji has a limp from when Kamoshida broke his right leg just makes me wanna hate Kamoshida even more than I do, and I already hate him with every fiber of my being. Though his boss fight was alright, not gonna lie.
I have the same opinion with Madarame as well. I absolutely hate his guts and his confession after his change of heart was absolutely hilarious to me when I saw it for the first time. That's how much I hated both of them. Hated his boss fight as well. It was frustratingly annoying and difficult.
Ryuji has always been a comfort character for me for this exact reason. I see a lot of myself in him.
In middle school I had an awful PE teacher who constantly disregarded people when they couldn’t take anymore of whatever we were doing that day and was always smug about her position. One day I tripped and sprained my ankle pretty bad, so I had to wear a boot to get around. Being 12 I really didn’t like wearing it and didn’t understand the importance of it, so one day I went to school without it on, and despite my doctor telling them I couldn’t run for a few weeks, my teacher saw this and demanded I go do a mile run if I didn’t need to wear my boot anymore. I pleaded with her multiple times to not make me, because I knew if I just said no I’d get in trouble. She didn’t back down and made me run.
Miraculously I was able to finish it, but that ended up being my ankles last hoorah. After the adrenaline wore off I ended up having to go to the hospital again and found out my ankle was busted. Chronically broken. I’m nearly 20 now and I’ll never be able to run or dance again unless I get surgery, which I can’t afford. As someone who loved theater it completely jacked my involvement and in my social life a lot of people can’t seem to understand that even though I can walk, I’m still partially disabled.
And funnily enough… the year my ankle was messed up was the same year that Persona 5 came out. I played it eventually and once I learned about Ryuji’s story it made me cry because by that point I’d realized that because of the cruelty of my teacher the trajectory of my life was totally flipped around. I also just relate to a lot of other things about him. I never did well in school and was bullied by both my teachers and my peers, which made me resentful. Not to mention, I even share the same birthday with Ryuji! Seeing him grow as a character and be empowered despite everything that’s happened to him was really important for me when I was younger, and even still I sometimes think back on persona 5 and smile because of how uplifting Ryuji was for me.

I know what Kamoshida had done to Shiho and Ann is despicable and I'm glad they got their revenge. BUT, what he has done to Mishima or Ryuji is also REALLY despicable and should be highlighted in the story. PLUS, the student ONLY apologized to Ann whereas Ryuji still carries the stigma of assaulting Kamoshida instead of the truth. THAT REALLY PISSED ME OFF. Ryuji deserves something too.

@@GothAngel98 If you provoke someone into hitting you, yes you can get charged with provocation. The person slugging you however still gets charged with assault. Because they still hit you. It's just generally treated as more of a slap on the wrist in that situation. Well, so long as you don't have a history of violence because at that point you need to do something about it. What Kamoshida did in return exceeds self-defense however.
Ryuji still got the track team disbanded for roughly a year because he hit Kamoshida. That fact doesn't change because Kamoshida's a walking D, and confessed to his crimes. The reason for disbanding it doesn't stand anymore because it was instigated assault, and that's why you see it reinstated, but everyone on the team still lost the track team for a year. How long did they have to look to find a place to train? Plus how much time and/or money they now had to devote to a trainer. Yeah, Ryuji 'lost' (not really. While the injury is serious, with physical therapy and adaptive training one can actually become an even better runner than before) his future, but he also took everyone else's because with that missing year they won't be able to get scholarship's either.

You can actually also see it when he’s not moving too. If you look you see he’s got both feet pointing outwards instead of straight ahead. It might not actually be because of his injury, but it would make sense

Don't quote me if I'm wrong but isn't Ryuji also one of the slowest characters in the game? I believe all of the characters stats are based off of story or character stuff, like how Ann has one of the lowest H.P stats because she's unhealthy.
Yeah I always thought Ryuji has low speed, high health, Ann has low health, Makoto has balanced stats because she works out regularly and is also studious so she has smarts and Yusuke has low health because he doesn't get enough food.
