I'm gonna be honest and say to start with I wasn't sure about Joyce's energy when I started watching her but this just shows I shouldn't judge people and first impressions aren't everything. I absolutely love her, she's so open to trying new things and I live for her little songs ❤️
I love people who are willing to try new things. It makes me happy that she is changing up her normal routine to fit into one that is better for the environment.
I adore you for being so into the zero waste topic and really trying to show people that they can do it too and experimenting so others can learn off you as well. Thank you for spreading awareness!
Joyce is GLOWING with this new skin care routine; Her and Ari are quickly turning into my new favourite buzzfeed duo (along with Jackie and Kevin of course).
I really appreciate Joyce for trying all of this, and spreading a good message of being eco friendly. This should be everyone ♥️ 💕 (Edit: Wow... I got a lot of likes, thank you!)
Ikr, honestly shocking and in L.A too, of all places not to recommend an SPF lol. Speaking of which that Auri girl who's routine only included a bar of soap and jojoba oil (which is great and all don't get me wrong) should *really really* think of investing in an SPF. She's pale, freckly and living in L.A lol. And there are zero waste SPFs out there, usually pure zinc or titanium oxide pastes that are refillable and in reusable tin containers.
M G Sunscreen is important in order to prevent skin cancer, it happens to anyone anywhere. The ears and eyelids are common areas since that’s where no one puts sunscreen on when they do put it on for the face.
The last bottle she uses to moisturize actually has some oils that naturally protect you from sun damage! I’m not sure that it’s protections would measure the same as like spf 30 but it’s something 🤷🏻♀️. I’m surprised she didn’t mention it either though!
I really liked that you said you still had to finish your original skincare products to truly be zero waste ! The aesthetic mustn't come before the end goal haha
the derm didn't give her an spf and she gave her coconut oil which is known to clog pores. Also using just an oil as a moisturizer isn't sufficient at all
Joyce and Auri are such feel-good people. They're positive and calm and it's awesome. They really show how kind they are to themselves. Also, I'm so proud of Joyce to be exploring zero waste products and slowly changing parts of her daily routine. It reminds me of when Auri was only getting started on zero waste. Go girls!
Aw I was hoping for a promo for her next zero waste video. Please tell me this is not the end?? You did the most obvious/cliche zero waste transformations.. how about zero waste clothing, zero waste haircare, zero waste cleaning, zero waste commuting, zero waste entertainment, zero waste crafting, zero waste jobs, zero waste, etc. ... all look at the waste we produce in order to do the activities we enjoy.
I don’t think the transformations should be looked at as “cliche” after all this is the beginning of her journey and it’s helpful for the people who were only just introduced to zero waste to see these simple transitions.
Zoe D Well it’s easier for people to start with basic stuff she’s not actually zero waste herself she’s just trying to be less wasteful so ofc she’s not gonna bust out with a bunch of these videos on more complicated topics. Let’s just give praise where it’s due and if she stops we can say “hey can you do more zero waste videos please?”
joyce is the best addition to the zero waste movement!! Literally has changed the game 100% makes me more invested and makes me try to live my life with zero waste!! Love her!
can i just say... i live for this zero waste series? like so many youtubers or youtube videos feature people who have done zero waste for ages and have adapted to it, they don't actually know how intimidating changing our way of life is. consuming and producing waste is all society's ever known until now. great job with spreading awareness on this!
Since those are made of polyester which when you wash them they get into the ocean which is not the best material to use for that reason. So far I like using cotton and bamboo, there are other natural materials like hemp fabric which I haven’t tried but there’s a lot of alternatives out there.
@@pineapple365 yes! It could be a short term solution, but not long term. Micro plastics are a huge problem and what are you going to do with it if/when it's unuseable. You can't recycle it and its just going to end up in landfill. That's why people should start using products with natural materials.
I love that this came out now!! I’ve been moving towards zero/lower waste skincare for about 2 months and it has done WONDERS! Less acne, better complexion, softer skin which means I don’t feel the need to wear as much makeup. It’s saving me money and creating less waste- win for my skin, win for my wallet, and win for the earth! I’m enjoying moving towards lower waste alternatives 😄
I'm a huge fan of coconut oil as an oil cleanser! My skin is really oily so I rub it on my face and then place a hot face cloth over it for about 30 seconds and then rub the oil off with that and find that it's moisturising, but leaves less residue. I also have a solid facial oil from lush that is lower waste and i think could be even lower if I were able to go to a store to buy it. I also like to use green or peppermint tea as a toner! I brew it, wait for it to cool, and then place it in a reusable container and put it in the fridge to use as a toner (it's the only thing i've found to use as a toner that doesn't burn/break out my skin). When I'm finished the face wash I have now I'd like to try to find a bar to reduce waste and then look for a lower waste or more environmentally friendly moisturiser.
Yessss I love these zero waste videos! I am a mama of soon to be 4 kids. I don't have a lot of time but once they all go to bed this is what I do for skin care... I made my own face scrubbies and unpaper towels from cotton woven and cotton terry fabrics. First, I wash my face with a bar of soap that I bought from HEB (a texas store) and then I go over it with a toner. That is not zero waste but its better than what I was doing before! Then with my unpaper towel I dry my face and put coconut oil. That's it!!
This is BY FAR the most relateable series EEEEVVVEEERRR on a real person implementing Zero-Waste. I can't commend Joyce enough for going in and being such a super star role model and Auri for being such a sweet supportive guide. ♥
Ari should have her own show of helping people go zero waste little by little, I think all the work she’s done for buzzfeed and everyone who watches these videos is so beneficial. I know that after the first zero-waste video, I’ve cut out plastic bags, straws, ziplocks and styrofoam completely. I’m in a place in my life where I have the ability to do this and it’s incredibly fulfilling. Thanks ari!
I really, really like Joyce. And best of all, it's a very relatable, real person showing you can take steps to be more conscious. Joyce is my favourite person on TH-cam rn tbh
I like that you're going to use up your old products and "ease in" the new ones. Love your honest opinion of these things! Also, love that you make it a self-care type of routine!! Yes!!
I love this series.Ialso love that Joyce skincare routine went from 10 steps to 4. Not only zero -waste but minimal. I want to one day have a zero -waste skincare routine that would help with my dry skin, blackheads and my pores which are a little big and have whiteheads.
I would love to see a challenge where ari helps disabled people reduce waste! I’m disabled and would love to reduce waste for cost and environmental reasons, but a lot of zero waste options just aren’t possible. Like, I’d love to see ari work with different people with different disabilities. How can we get pre-cut food without the plastic? What are some safe environmentally friendly straws? What if we don’t have a dishwasher? What’s easy to clean? What if we can’t drive to all these different health stores? Or I’d love to see trying to go zero waste in the suburbs or a food desert!
I'm so glad Joyce is trying to reduce in every way possible! I wasn't a fan of the coconut oil nor the lack of sunscreen/spf BUT the reusable cotton pads are something I do use! I can't wait to see what's next!!
Zero waste wasn't something i ever thought about or considered but this video is helpful in showing what that looks like from a skin care stand point. Love these videos, so helpful.
For most people, "zero waste" is impossible, but you can always get rid of *at least some waste*, my body and hair care are zero waste (mostly lush), but my face wash, moisturizer and spf come in plastic packaging, because I have extreme facial eczema and have simply not found anything else that would work as well. Still I no longer buy plastic (covered): shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, razor, shaving gel, cotton pads, female products etc.
A. Wash your face in the shower. B. Stay out of the sun C. Use a basic skin oil for all of your body. D. Don't wear so much makeup and you won't age as quickly
gotta start mine too i've been too scared to use zero waste skin care routine thank you for showing us how easy it is and we don't have to be afraid of breaking out
after eating a banana rub the interior of the peel on your skin and let it sit before you wash your face. It's great for hydration. Also, you can smash a tiny bit and mix it with turmeric and use it at night for brightening the skin!
I made my own reusable makeup remover rounds, and my own makeup remover, using coconut oil, olive oil, Dr bronners soap, and I even added some of my witchazel toner too. I didn't like how oily the coconut oil on its own made me feel, so adding this stuff really helped me. With my other products, as I run out of my packaged items, I will move towards more sustainable products ❤️
I am loving this series you are doing. It has truely inspired me to do more research on the impact plastic is making, be more thoughtful on saying no to plastic items, and of course starting me zero waste journey I started limiting my waste in my bathroom first and as I finish products I purchase the zero waste option. :)
jenny carrington I have oily skin, so it actually makes my skin less oily! It’s crazy! I use to get breakouts all the time, now I only break out during that time of the month.
@@zarif12031994 if you don't swim you should be fine, besides you have to see if your skin is compatible with mineral sunscreen too, some people break out, also some do reflect light back if you wear it under make up so it makes your skin and makeup don't match. so keep trying and test what works
Budleee Bazz I break out from both, chemical and physical sunscreens 😭 but at least I protect myself from uv so it doesn't matter lol I'm still trying new sunscreens and hoping to find my favorite
Nipzche I actually considered that but since the oceans are flooded with plastic I decided to go with plastic free packaging sun screen option. It's ok if I break out here and there as long as I can contribute to change. And if you know any good sunscreen that is packed in glass, paper or biodegradable sugar cane plastic then please let me know 🙏
This is so great! Love No Tox Life, and there are so many great facial bars/oils out there (that are zero-waste and often vegan/cruelty free!) And great tip about washing the cotton rounds in a mesh bag - when I let them lose they clogged my washing machine, so definitely good to keep them in there!
Ooh! Make sure it's oxybenzone and Octinoxate free too! I have a video on my channel about SPF :) but I recommend the Raw Elements sunscreen that comes in a tin!
Not necessarily zero waste but I use the supergoop invincible setting powder, it’s 45 spf and a mineral sunscreen. Another thing I like is that you buy the whole thing at once but once it’s out, you can buy powder refills so at least it’s less plastic. Also I use it at the very end, not as a setting powder but to just add an extra layer of spf, and it doesn’t mess up my foundation
aurora angel i said the same thing!! as soon as she brought out coconut oil i was like no ma’am. i’ll watch the vid but will take everything she says with a grain of salt
@@EmilyFlame94 thats great, then you probably do not have very acne prone skin. Coconut oil is highly comedogenic due to the size of the molecules of the oil. It sits on top of your skin instead of penetrating it.
I've never had a problem just using it for makeup removal and then washing my face right afterwards. I definitely wouldn't try to use it as a moisturizer though. Another good alternative for makeup removal is Lush's line of package free cleansing balms.
Natural ingredients aren’t necessarily better for you. I agree that we don’t need a lot of steps in our skincare routine, but I’d rather buy tried-and-true products than ones that just sound clean.
I loveeeeee this! Way to go, Joyce and Auri! I am still working on zero wastifying my skincare so this was awesome. For the bath, I’ve switched from liquid soaps and shampoos that came in single use plastics to bar soaps and shampoos - I love it!! Also, I started using reusable pads for my period - sounds kinda gross but I love it so much! 🥰
LeoDeGrand omg right! Some people actually use it as moisturizer and I am not one of those people I used it once and when I woke up my face had a couple zits
Well there's a difference between leaving it on your skin because it doesn't absorb all to well, but she removed it after words and I think your skin only absorbs a little/the amount it needs. I don't think it will clog your pores if you wash it off
I'm going to the same thing and pass to zero waste products. Lately for the last 2 years I've been trying organic, bio skincare products and lately I realized how ... Much different things I'm using. I will pass on zero waste skincare soon as soon as I'll finish my products ✌🏻 thanx for the" starter kit " advising!
Seems like she’s washing her face afterwards. Also if you’ve ever heard of the oil cleansing method, it’s where you basically massage oil into your skin to break down sebum and then you use a very hot cloth that you wring out to kind of steam your face before wiping away the oil, and it is supposed to get rid of any oil in your pores.
Brandee Michelle the oil cleansing method DESTROYED my skin. I invested money into high quality oils and nice face cloths and it took 6 months to get my skin back to normal after a week of the OCM. Also coconut oil is a very highly comedogenic ingredient so I don’t know why people use it so much in skincare 😩
Joiiiice mah gurlll you’re really impacting ppl, at lease me and I’m doing good and staying concise with plastic use, specially in the food department!! Keep up the good work!
I want to be zero waste but I have to use a special brand (Murad) and if I don’t use it I break out. Long story short give that dermatologist my number lol 🤩
I use bar soap for my body, bamboo wood bristle body scrubber, currently finishing the last bit of my plastic bottle haircare, then moving onto the no-poo method. Occasionally mix coffee grounds and coconut oil for a body scrub
she could just use african black soap, and shea butter... for toners she can use rose water and rose hip oil.. drinking apple cider vinegar and using aloe vera can also be helpful
@@monique7019 Rice's shelf life is 12 months if u refrigerate it. Rice water's shelf life is a week because it starts to have a bad smell after that. So its important to make small batches so you won't waste much.

Vegetable colagen gel (ethical company) recyclable plastic 4. Aloe vera moisturiser creme (biodegradable) from a sustainable company recyclable plastic container

I’m all for reducing waste, but as someone with oily, sensitive, acne prone, eczema prone skin - ain’t nobody got time for that lmao
I am loving this series you are doing. It has truely inspired me to do more research on the impact plastic is making, be more thoughtful on saying no to plastic items, and of course starting me zero waste journey
I started limiting my waste in my bathroom first and as I finish products I purchase the zero waste option. :)
Let’s try zero waste hair care products please 🥰😂
I’m loving this series!! Shows you that being zero waste isn’t as hard as you would assume!!
are you gonna do a video on zero waste make up? that’d be great cuz i’ve been trying to find zero waste make up products but haven’t had any luck yet
I use coconut oil to clean my face and as a moisturizer.
I’ve been doing it for over 6years. LOVE IT! 😍
If i did that i would break out so badly lol
jenny carrington I have oily skin, so it actually makes my skin less oily! It’s crazy! I use to get breakouts all the time, now I only break out during that time of the month.
What about sunscreen?
karanja oil.
Joyce has become one of my favorite BuzzFeed personalities. I learn a lot from her videos.
I think it’s great they had a dermatologist help but she didn’t really address SPF/sunscreen - I’d be curious to see what she would recommend
The would definitely suggest physical sunscreens instead of chemical sunscreens since the chemical ones are bad for reefs
@@zarif12031994 Since the US has limited sunscreen filters maybe you should try the newer chemical sunscreen filters from Europe or Asia.
Is there any zero waste alternatives for SPF?
Ooh! Make sure it's oxybenzone and Octinoxate free too! I have a video on my channel about SPF :) but I recommend the Raw Elements sunscreen that comes in a tin!
Allana Marie you are a life saver!
Sandcloud has a wonderful zero waste sunscreen
Not necessarily zero waste but I use the supergoop invincible setting powder, it’s 45 spf and a mineral sunscreen. Another thing I like is that you buy the whole thing at once but once it’s out, you can buy powder refills so at least it’s less plastic. Also I use it at the very end, not as a setting powder but to just add an extra layer of spf, and it doesn’t mess up my foundation
@@martins4841 also using shade/ hats to add additional protection on top of sunscreen :)
Love these zero waste series and Joyce is such a pleasure to watch
I love her!! Shes so funny and althentic 💟💟
I'm a two step skin care routine kind of girl too! I have a face bar and a unscented refill face lotion. That's it. And I love it!!
I dont trust a dermatologist that recomends coconut oil on the face . No ma'm.
aurora angel i said the same thing!! as soon as she brought out coconut oil i was like no ma’am. i’ll watch the vid but will take everything she says with a grain of salt
I was about to exit the whole vid 😂
321784ju It can clog your pores, try an oil that’s specifically for your skin
@@EmilyFlame94 thats great, then you probably do not have very acne prone skin. Coconut oil is highly comedogenic due to the size of the molecules of the oil. It sits on top of your skin instead of penetrating it.
I've never had a problem just using it for makeup removal and then washing my face right afterwards. I definitely wouldn't try to use it as a moisturizer though. Another good alternative for makeup removal is Lush's line of package free cleansing balms.
I cut up an old flannel shirt to use for make up wipes (with micelles water). It’s not the softest but it gets the job done and prevents waste!
did this “doctor” just say coconut oil!!! for your skin!!!??? is she crazy????
It's okay because she is washing it off.
Lol why not rub this super comedogenic oil into your skin????
LeoDeGrand omg right! Some people actually use it as moisturizer and I am not one of those people I used it once and when I woke up my face had a couple zits
Alexa A no
Well there's a difference between leaving it on your skin because it doesn't absorb all to well, but she removed it after words and I think your skin only absorbs a little/the amount it needs.
"What? Who's in my home?"
That's the camera crew, Joyce...
Oh my god I love her. I am so happy that routine worked for her. Very satisfying to watch!
Isn’t coconut oil super pore clogging?
She had to wash it really well she only using it to melt down the makeup
Yes, i learned that the hard way
Seems like she’s washing her face afterwards. Also if you’ve ever heard of the oil cleansing method, it’s where you basically massage oil into your skin to break down sebum and then you use a very hot cloth that you wring out to kind of steam your face before wiping away the oil, and it is supposed to get rid of any oil in your pores.
yup, so you have to see whether your skin reacts well to it or not,
Brandee Michelle the oil cleansing method DESTROYED my skin.
Long story short give that dermatologist my number lol 🤩
just go west smh
Kaitlyn Terrell sane here murad works wonders for me
I use bar soap for my
body, bamboo wood bristle body scrubber, currently finishing the last bit of my plastic bottle haircare, then moving onto the no-poo method. Occasionally mix coffee grounds and coconut oil for a body scrub
Every since I started using this... girl you tried it once
This has easily become my favorite series... I Stan Joyce
You should never put coconut oil on your face!!! It clogs pores causing more imperfections and blemishes. Even if it’s just to remove your make up!!
she could just use african black soap, and shea butter... for toners she can use rose water and rose hip oil.. drinking apple cider vinegar and using aloe vera can also be helpful
A good zero waste toner is rice water!
Shishio Sensei do you happen to know what the shelf life or keep date for this is? I made a batch before and did really like it.
@@monique7019 Rice's shelf life is 12 months if u refrigerate it. Rice water's shelf life is a week because it starts to have a bad smell after that. So its important to make small batches so you won't waste much.
My low waste skincare
(I live in a very underdeveloped place so I do my best😅)
1. Wash with raw honey and water
2. Rose water (toner) big plastic jug
3. Vegetable colagen gel (ethical company) recyclable plastic
4. Aloe vera moisturiser creme (biodegradable) from a sustainable company recyclable plastic container
Coconut oil can be so comedogenic and I'm cringing
It was used as a makeup remover meant to be washed off. It works well for that and is really cheap.
I love Joyce and her attitude. She makes me want to try that routine
