Great videos guys just found your channel , and I have to say it's funny because I watch all the same you tube channels you do ,and have been dreaming of doing the same thing that u are for years ,so my wife and I just pulled the trigger and bought 15 acres in upstate NY in the Cortland area ,then bought a 5th wheel and put it on the property to use as base camp ,and a family get away ,retirement is six years away ,as is the property ugggg. then the off grid build begins !! ill only be sixty years old so I should still be able to do it . I hope .great stuff guys .keep it up
Hey Tom, thanks for checking out the channel. That's awesome, congrats! You only get one go around so we figured, might as well do what makes us happy 😁. Sixty is the new 30 so no worries there. Wish you all the best as you get closer to retirement & building (probably better off waiting anyway as the material prices, availability, ect... are absolutely absurd during these times). Stay well!
Thank you for sharing this- Can I ask what dimensions this building is? How tall are your walls? Also, did your attic truss area end up being a loft or an actual attic? If a loft did you do a ladder to get up or steps? Thank you very much, sorry ive trued watching other videos you have but i cant find the final walkthrough that show this.
Awesome house! One thing though: what's the wind load like on the gable end of the great room...have you had any problems there? It seems like there isn't any continuous framing--vertical or horizontal--in that wall...
Thanks David. Haven’t had any issues on that gable end side & we had a ridiculously crazy windy & stormy winter. I was very happy with the build for sure. Since the lower walls are tied together so we’ll & the trusses carry all the roof load, I wasn’t concerned about the gable framing. I also didn’t get to show everything I did, but there are definitely areas where the framing is all tied together. UCC officer was very happy when they did the rough-in inspection. Thanks again for checking out the channel!
Hi! Love those parallel chord trusses! What was the plate to plate span and lifting weight of the truss? Thanks. Sorry I'm late to the party I will try to catch up!
Hey Keweenawbee, thanks for checking out the build. Plate to Plate span was 28ft (with a Raised Heel & 24in Overhang). Parallel Trusses were around 220lbs & the Attic Trusses were about 250lbs. Hope this helps!
@@shabinlife Who was your truss manufacturer or supplier? I found your video doing a search for parallel chord truss . I anticipate a build where i would possibly need them with the raised heel . Thanks for sharing your journey.
first and foremost, thank you! after a summer of not getting anywhere with contractors, my husband and I thinking about framing ourselves. tonight, i was concerned about the interior pitch of the scissor trusses which led me down the rabbit hole of parallel chords. watching your video, its eerie, how similar our floor plans are comparable...down to the viewshed end wall. What is the height of your top plate, 9'-0"?
That’s great & no problem at all, thanks for checking out the channel. I can very much understand the frustration with contractors... I only had to deal with a few in the beginning stages & that was enough, lol. Yes, the walls are 9’. Wall studs are 104 5/8 + bottom plate + double top plate.
@@mattmorgensen1052 Hey Matt, they are a Parallel Chord Truss (w/ a 24” raised heel), so it would be the same 6/12 pitch inside and out. Hope that helps a bit.
Such a great video! Thank you for sharing your build -- very glad to have found and subscribed to your channel. At a span of (I believe) 28' and 6/12 pitch, was a 12' wide x 7'2" h interior room as large as possible by the manufacturer or did you have set interior dimensions that you requested for the attic trusses? Appreciate any insight you can provide, thank you!
Thanks so much Leighry! Unfortunately, I was not able to specify a specific interior attic space. The truss manufacturing & engineering pretty much dictates the overall allowable space once they're manufactured. I think it's around 10' x 7'6" & there's a 24in raised heel on the trusses as well. Hope that helps... Also, I was lucky I could even find someone to manufacture at the time as many companies (3 local'ish within 75/100 miles) weren't even accepting orders due to the lumber shortage & pandemic hitting.

Since I speak GSD, I am sure yours was telling you they could climb scaffolding faster...! Awesome video thank you for sharing.
Good build

@@shabinlife Great video. Could you share the pitch of your interior if you know it? (in the video you said 6/12 ...assume that's exterior?)

Is that Norwegian Wood by the Beatles?
It’s “The126ers.” The song is called “The Day Is Close.” Definitely sounds like it has a little Beatles influence behind it, lol. Great catch!
