Mike Brecker was the most complete sax player ever born bar none.He mastered the Tenor Sax.I 've never seen any sax player attack the instrument like he did
Wow, it's amazing how much of Trane's influence you can hear coming out in Michael but at the same time, he definitely has his own sound and style that just make my draw drop. We will truly miss you Michael, you were taken away from us too soon!
I have been a pro saxophone player for 30 plus years and am always in awe of Michael. He is the Motzart, Rembrant, Stravinski and Worhal of post modern intelectual music.
...like the many that have passed on; they are not gone, musically. I have always felt that personages that have left us (like Brecker, Trane, Fat Girl, Bird, Jimi, et al) were/are conduits for musical energy passing through them for us ! A manifestation of grace, if you will. I thank the 'prime mover'.
At 4:32 he blows a killer variation on a nice ii-V7 pattern that I've heard Bird and Getz and many others use... but Michael's variation is really hip with his outside modulation added.
Bro I caught that as well. It's alot of licks in here from all over but played so well he also plays something similar around 5:08 in as well. Brecker is Goated like the man was so amazing.
Wow !! I've finally got someone to LISTEN to again! Since Trane, Stitt and Dexter passed on, I thought I wouldn't have anyone else I want to hear. But, tonight, Marks6338, I've found someone--thanks to you. I did not hear ONE WRONG NOTE by Brecker. Further, it was a real heart warming thing to listen to the Japanese musicians- who have really gotten into the music- play as expertly as they did. This type of thing AGAIN shows how close all humans are--or can be. Thanks again, Marks 6338. Now, I'm going on a journey for MORE BRECKER !!
thanks mr brecker for all your wonderful music.you left your mark alright.you will never be forgotten.one of the greats.up there with j.c.now.many thanks.marks6338.
I think that is the idea here, drum1953, MB said himself that his rendition of 'Say It' was his way of saying thanks, of paying homage to one of his closest mentors, if your will. The torch must be passed on, as others, mentored by MB and those you mentioned, will arise and come into their own greatness as new unique voices in a parade of new generations.
This was recorded by John Coltrane but the actual composer is Frank Loesser, was an American songwriter who wrote the lyrics and music to the Broadway hits Guys and Dolls and How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, among others. He won separate Tony Awards for the music and lyrics in both shows, as well as sharing the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the latter.
It's so amazing to see this cross cultural stuff happening. Coltrane in japan; who would have thought? On the contrary, Austin, I thought that the drummer did a nice job. So often ballad drum parts are simplistic and "tinkly;" this one was nice and rhythmic. It was a bit heavy on the snare, but it gives it a unique sound. I suppose you could find it same-y, but I find it interesting.
3:53-4:10 i love the piano chord melody, sort of wynton kelly Michael smoking of course 6:36 that note perfect choice, what is it? sharp9 on a dominant? can't be bothered to work it out and i don't have good pitch anyway
ameblo.jp/galwayera/entry-12158453643.html Listening to this album "Ballad", Some People told that John Coltrane has become a simple mood tenor sax player. But I don't want to agree with this opinion. I've been loving this Coltrane's album titled "Ballad" which includes attractive songs like "Say it" or "Nancy". This Album shows us another enchantment which is different from "Giant steps". Mr. Michael Brecker is faithfully playing it, comparing with original playing of John Coltrane. Anyway this Performance is remarkably nice.
sounds very much like a pattern coltrane used too. Accents on chromatically descending notes from root of II minor chord - sharp 7, flat 7 and sixth. On D minor, the Csharp, Cnat, B. Same technique often used to embellish static harmony (i.e. two-bar minor chords)
It's a very well known ii/V/i phrase usually most associated with Sonny Stitt. That's where I first heard it and I've since seen a few educators pass it on as a Stitt excercise. A very good one to learn on all keys.

I agree.
it's beautiful to see such a technically accomplished musicians play with such discipline and tenderness on a ballad... long live brecker
May I cry?
Awesome sax player. He's like the Jimi Hendrix of saxophone. No one will ever be as great as Michael Brecker.
Brecker"s sound is so wonderful !!!!
i think that was possibly the best saxophone solo i have ever heard in my entire life.
Nawl bruh "Common Ground" that's the GOAT
One of the very best. We love and miss you Mike .
One of the most beautiful ballads from Michael ....
Manuel Goldbach Coltrane has a much better version than anybody else
it simply can't get any better then this. unearthly beautiful.
Timeless. What a great homage to John Coltrane. Brecker lives!
mike is a big influence for all the sax players, its a lenguaje... a way to play... For me the best....... Thanks for your music mike....
I have been a pro saxophone player for 30 plus years and am always in awe of Michael. He is the Motzart, Rembrant, Stravinski and Worhal of post modern intelectual music.
Very proud of Japanese players along with the great saxphonist !!

Great musician, always to be remembered
One of my main inspirations to play my alto, i want a tennor sax now!
What a musician, fantastic performance, RIP Michael.
God be with Michael and Bless his family.
Rest In Peace
Greg
4:10-4:31 such a gift for melody, especially the last little statement. you could write words to this.
Brecker is Goated like the man was so amazing.
he means he improvises so melodically and logically that one could write lyrics to his improvised melody.
One would say that great players (and not only musicians) were all poets like him.
Excellent, Excellent!!! beautiful interpretation. What a incredible piece of jazz!!
It's not a matter of difficulty but the way you play it.. Wish I could play it like Michael..
Brecker's sound was so great, and all those sinuous lines...
Still so unreal that he is gone. What I do know is he was definitely here.
fantastic man michael...GOD bless your soul...
I love this song. So great to hear Micheael do it.

Michael was "Trane" of this generation. He took what the amazing Coltrane did and expanded on it to the next level.
thanks mr brecker for all your wonderful music.you left your mark alright.you will never be forgotten.one of the greats.up there with j.c.now.many thanks.marks6338.
Damn. Bravo bravo lol. This is how I wanna be, My goal. Simply motivating, beautiful

He was lookin so good in this one! :)
he gave too much to us we must learn from him rest in peace he was very good in 20 century
I love it!

I agree with jfvlute87. Michael took jazz and music further and elaborated on his influences to take it even further.
Praise to the King !
impresionante.

kkk Este é Michael Brecker!
I'm really going to run over my Tenor in the morning with my pickup truck loaded with sand.
Que lindo!
magnifique
4:10 to 4:31 is pure melodic brilliance.
WOW!
3:53-4:10 i love the piano chord melody, sort of wynton kelly
Michael smoking of course
6:36 that note perfect choice, what is it? sharp9 on a dominant? can't be bothered to work it out and i don't have good pitch anyway
Major six on a 13 b9 chord

God bless his soul krikor sax
That phrase doesn't belong to anyone. It's all of ours. Seriously, I mean that.

Alguien tiene la partitura de este tema? Podria intentar sacarlo a oido pero me llevaría muchísimo tiempo...
gracias !
as in... to the section that doesn't already have words... also known as the improv section...
"so you're going to play a ballad which is not the difficult one... " 😂😂
Oh man!! Brecker at 4:10!
ya man i tried some yanis and the altos are rippin man, theyre great!
Brecker doesn't play a Yani. He plays a Selmer Mark VI.
@stephenruggieri I don't know the author of this piece, but the John Coltrane's version is very famous!
Lol "Not the harder one, the easier one" And Brecker proves yet another misconception wrong.
Trane would be proud!
GOD LOVE YOU TOO MUCH KRIKOR LIBANON
It comes from the word "accompany."
Nice laptop for 1999.
Does anyone know if this is a Brecker original? If not who is the composer of this tune?
Thnx
That chord-melody phrase the pianist does at 3:55, I've heard it before, who used to play that? Wynton Kelly?
RIP Ponta san
god .... imagine this whit eddy gomez and keith jarret
can someone translate that bass player in the beginning?
His voice sounds like Nicholas Cage, my god...
yeah you're right just checked on piano, it's b9
wow he sounds almost exactly like john coltrane, amazing sound
zaboomafoo Coltrane has a dry simple sound that I love. This sound is more bright and commercial like love sax on porno from the 70s or something.
