2021 FIAT Panda 4X4 - new car collection and look under - what does the 4x4 system look like ?

  • We have bought ourselves a brand spanking new 2021 FIAT Panda 4x4 cross !
    What is it? what's new in the 2021 model and most interestingly, what does it look like on a ramp - lets expose the 4x4 system, build quality and check the off road goodies.
    The standard Panda is a spacious, well priced and well equipped city car, it drives in a way that makes the hire driver thrash it a little harder and look to get one again! - in TwinAir form, it has an interesting, characterful and raucous two-cylinder engine.
    Perhaps it’s the 'squircles', perhaps it’s just that Fiat, possibly more than any other car maker, really understands that a city car is meant to be fun. It’s not all subjective, mind. And, with this variant, the Panda can add something else to its repertoire: four-wheel drive.
    There are plenty of fine city cars out there - the latest triumvirate from the Volkswagen Group among them (VW Up, Skoda Citigo and Seat Mii) - but still, there’s something about the Panda that manages to warm our hearts even in that company.
    In 4x4 form it's even more engaging and, more importantly, one of the few cars of its size and class that's so equipped. Rivals are few and far between, with only the Dacia Duster, Suzuki SX4, Vauxhall Adam Rocks and Fiat 500X presenting themselves as genuine alternatives.
    With just 150mm of ground clearance the Panda 4x4 isn't built for going far off road - it's not a Jeep or Land Rover, after all. Instead, it's best to think of it as a city car with muddy field-crossing capability. However, if it is more hardcore off-roading you are looking to do in a Panda, then the Cross may very well be the answer, with its raised ride heights and bumpers.
    Yet this little 4x4 - can wade better than a Bentayga, on 5th Gear TV show, can out muddy track a Defender, so what's not to like?

    The Panda 4x4 is better than many expensive suvs. My twinair has so much character and is definitelly punchy even in 5th gear. Very underated car!

      It was amazing today - have put in another comment, wanted to bottle a steep, washed out dirt / flint road today - took it in its stride - does not look much on camera and we were enjoying ourselves a little too much, so back at the weekend to get some distance shots to hopefully show it off better !

    Hello from Belgium
    I own the same Panda since 2017 and now after 110000 km without any problem, I am still so happy to drive it and to hear its particular sound.
    I am 56 years old, i owned many different cars and this is one of my favorite. It seems to be "unstoppable". In addition, I like design in general, and without emphasis, this car is well design in many many details that are "refreshing". This car gives smile, with simplicity, this is not common nowadays.

      Hello from Portugal 😎
      I love the sound, we were surprised how good it is with the stock exhaust - and a young man like you must love that !!
      My pet hate is everything on a touch screen - we do have the facelift with a screen (and I do like apple car play) but everything is still controlled by buttons or dials - love it.

    My wife has had the standard 4x4 since 2016. It’s a keeper. First thing we did was remap to 100bhp, probably not necessary but it really improves its drive. It came with winter tyres and following a Defender in snow once it was rock solid when the Defender was sliding a lot due to camber changes. (Maybe it was the tyres that did it)

    • @DrivenMadShow
      @DrivenMadShow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We are wanting to remap - love the old 100hp Pandas, so will badge ours up in appreciation - probably not for a few months as I am almost sure I will need clutch work first (or learn to drive it better !!) - ours is way better since we put on Latitude Cross tyres, agree with you, tyres are a real key (not that we will see any snow here ) hope you follow the testing of ours, few months in to our ownership and this week we really tested it (just editing, should be up on the 2nd I think🤞🏼

      We fitted all seasons as we have lots of dirt roads to explore ! I gaffed buying some 185 Latitude cross tyres, as it came with 175 - here in Portugal the tyre size is on the documents you have to keep in the car at all times - anything on the car, not on the document and you are walking home !! - so got to go through the legal loop to get them approved (Portugal, could take years🤣) so I have Semperit 175 65 15's - very good, much quieter than the Continental eco's it came with (bit of a shock).

      My last car in the UK was a 1 series beemer - when we got here to Portugal, Mrs. M got a VW and I got a JEEP - if you have watched any other stuff Nath and I do, you will gather I never use it (retirement gift to myself) so my daily driver was a FIAT 500c, which I loved.
      We have a lot of dirt tracks around us & the 500c was immaculate, never seeing the dirt (ever) but the arrival of a dog and a desire to rag around in the dust made me chop the 500 for a Panda 4x4 - now the Panda has its faults (just like me :) but that makes it even more adorable (again, bit like me :) I love the Panda to the point it maybe my favourite car, ever ! Great in town, more than fine on the motorway and amazing on dirt tracks, taken me places no other car has - go get one !! (and let us have a photo)

    Fantastic cars! I have the regular Fiat Panda 4x4 Antarctica version not the cross version but it has the same 0.9 twinair engine!
    I can highly recommend them, the little 875cc 2 cylinder turbo engine feels like a much more powerful engine, very nimble and agile performer and sounds gorgeous, I love that roar as the turbo kicks in!
    It certainly surprises a few sportier cars at the lights😯⚠️😁
    I would recommend some good quality tyres that would suit a more rough terrain. I have hankook kinergy all season tyres on mine, which in the UK are perfect in our climate, cold winters and lots of wet weather, even in the 2 weeks of summer we get they're fine! ⚠️😁
    Regular oil changes are a must on the twinair, make sure you use the correct grade and quality as this engine is quite specific about oil.
    The clever intake valve setup uses oil pressure to open the valves and can vary the length of time they open and open them multiple times in one operation depending on engine revs, car speed and throttle position etc
    The 4x4 setup is very capable don't be fooled by it's city car appearance, it is a mountain goat in rough terrain!
    I've added your channel, looking forward to more adventures with your little Panda.😎👍

    I had a look under one at a dealer the other day as it was on a set of those huge ramps so it was a meter or so in the air. The rear suspension subframe was of interest to me as I know how badly the one on the earlier (169) model fares over time. The things that intrigued me were the two black things that look like upturned plastic beakers. What do they do? Resonance dampers?

    • @DrivenMadShow
      @DrivenMadShow  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spot on, dampers they are - luckily in Portugal, rust is not much of a thing - we just ordered a new subframe for our Abarth - not that its that bad, we just do not want the car off the road for long while we fiddle, its OEM brand new with rust already ! few coats of hammerite before we start should do the trick !

  • @usefulcommunication4516

    Great cars. The front bash plate is made of pig iron and will rust quickly if not looked after. And just you wait until you need to change the rear brake discs. Easy when you know how, but very few do. Including most Fiat garages.

      @@DrivenMadShow I didn't think about treating mine when it was new. I just weld on a another slab of metal when a new hole appears, Mind you, I'm in Sweden and mine spends most of the year bathed in salt - not a spot of corrosion anywhere else after 8 years - maybe the bash plate acts like a sacrificial anode :-) The best ice and snow car I have ever driven BTW - I blast by everything - and I've only ever used M+S tyres - don't even bother with studs - it appears to use magic to glue itself to the slippy stuff - I guess that's why they're all over the Italian Alps. Continue to have fun with yours. The most versatile, bomb proof and good value thing I've ever owned. I bought myself a trailer and roof rack bars when I bought the Panda and I've never needed another vehicle. You wouldn't believe what it can haul. Excellent - rust is not so much here, as we are in the Algarve - our ML is rust free, in the UK they just rot away, like you, salt is a killer, we only have it on chips 🤣 I even waxed our Panda the day after we collected it new ( pointless as galvanized, but I still did it ) I took the skid plate off as new (and a bit shitty as you say) and raptor coated it + paint - had to re do it a few times now and hammer it back to shape - but it does the job

    Hi Jon & Nath.....make sure you remove all 4 wheels and apply copper anti-seize grease onto the face of the hub and around the hub nuts and on the inside face of the wheel, as the alloy wheels being bolted onto the steel hubs make it difficult to remove the wheels due to dissimilar corrosion, I had to use a 2lb rubber dead blow mallet to remove all my wheels.......my advice would also be to keep a dead blow mallet in the boot of the car to remove the wheel if you have a puncture and need to change it with the spare wheel! Best regards to you both, Stefano....

      Cheers Stefano - I am a copper grease fanatic - most of my overalls are covered in the stuff !
      Just had Paddy recovered from his second outing - we fitted a new thermostat as the Portuguese like removing them ( ? ) odd to us - Paddy's was surprisingly still there, but rusted solid, so new one fitted - after about 100 miles the intake ( big bit with C clip) had blown off - we are suspecting (and hoping) it was a faulty one as putting it back together, nothing has been destroyed, but it really looks like the c clip would struggle to be inserted correctly - cannot see what else could cause this problem, as it drove perfectly, other than temperature not showing on the gauge) before.

    intresting, especially hav now seen the first time the 4x4 system. it looks similar to the one what is used in the 169er's model - a visco-clutch on the rear axle, but here with a system on the front gearbox for "controlling" the system (meaning of, when the system switch on and off). that would really be intresting - 'cause of knowing the system on the old 141A (with no other coupling mechanism as just the single one after the front differential who can engage the rear axle for grip) or the system from the 169 (what didn't have another coupling what can be enganged manually - there's only a visco-clutch at the rear axle, what will engage them when there's to much slip between front and rear axle). it might be only me, but the 900cc twinair sounds like a small motorbike on stereoids, what must tow 2 tons - to be fair, the panda just had round 1.185 kilograms on weight - and the engine is way worse in economics than the other ones fiat had before - or build later. that engine is just a shame in my sight - might be good enough in a fiat 500, but not in a panda - and especially not in a 4x4.

    • @DrivenMadShow
      @DrivenMadShow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right - the engine really should be a torque based unit, a simple 2ltr diesel tuned for torque & economy would make the car outstanding.
      Ours needs to be trashed up a steep hill - if you stop, there is a knack to getting it past the limiter which is to ride the clutch as you say.
      That said, it goes up steeper hills than I ever thought it could - the ride over dirt roads is incredibly good, way better than expected.

    Ive just watched and seen the under body protection but should it have a rear metal skid plate like the front ?

    • @DrivenMadShow
      @DrivenMadShow  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The more the better - I would say for a stock Panda, we have reached its limits - some of them really do not show how steep the climb is on camera - without low range, monster up hill sections with ruts are a no go, as you have to keep up a reasonable speed - likewise crawling over big ruts is hard as you just ride the clutch, but thats when you need to add better skid plates - they are available and a very worthwhile upgrade - the stock one, I have beaten back to shape quite a few times now.

      0W 30 - there are a few but's ... only use the FIAT approved stuff (Petronas Selenia, shop about, it is expensive, but on line not so bad - don't skimp !!) you will find the same grade, but various additives may be missing - the engine is a fantastic unit, but there are plenty of horror stories about them, a main reason they fail is simply using the wrong oil, fussy engine with some sophisticated lube channels that will block if the oil is wrong or not changed often enough - the other "but" is, always ask a main dealer to confirm information you get, there may be variations due to your location - our 0W 30 is hot Portugal :)

      You really need to get the codes read and you will be 100% on the fault - I will give you a guess (remember most youtubers are total idiots, I heavily fall into that category :) my best guess is the battery is on the way out ? you will know how old it is and if that could be a suspect or not - but most commonly you get "SS not available" is when the car does not have enough power to sustain the engine not running - so battery is the the prime suspect, could be the alternator, unlikely or you would be having a flat battery ? - if that makes any sense - hope its the cheapest option 🤞🏼

      @@DrivenMadShow That was the only one that I found, that fit the style of Panda. I have not bought it yet, but if I will decide, this would be the option. I find those boxy generic ones out of style. This one maybe does not have the inner storage space, but overall looks the best. If you will install it first, send the photo and experience please :)

      @@misolowy3929 We were out off road today, in quite a few panics, reaching for the handbrake was urgent - the Armster folds out of the way, so off road no problem, not sure this one does, but I really want it - I am emailing them to see if it does, that might be the problem for me - we had an Armester in our 500 and really liked it, but they have no stock for the Panda and would appear not to be re making any due to lack of demand, shame :(

      @@DrivenMadShow That might be a problem, did not think about it. On the other hand. The first time I sat in the car, I fell into the hole where the armrest should be. But after 2500km now, I do not even mind. It's just part of the car's charm and when city mode is on, you better have your arms on the wheel :) How is the engine? It is the 0.9twin air? I am only concerned about the sound in the cabin.

      @@misolowy3929 I do like an armrest, like you I have sort of forgotten about it, not doing motorway stuff, so changing gear a lot, sort of takes the need slightly away ? - ours is the twin air, its an odd noise, but we have fallen for it as we have the whole car, the exhaust sounds fantastic for stock, love the 2 cylinder thrum and it drives really well, way better than the performance stats suggest it would. We might in a year or so, get it re mapped, might being the main word, but would love 100hp and fit the vintage 100hp badges (or is that naff ?) :)
