I actually really enjoy this in comparison to most other betta breeding videos- you actually explain *what* to look for in the female to point out she's ready, as well as explain the conditioning process and future proofing. I really appreciate that! I have a blue rimmed female, and everyone kept telling me "When she's showing stripes she's ready." But I also didn't know you'd have to consider the size of her egg pouch and feeding her up etc, so cheers!
Best, most straight-forward Betta breeding video in all of TH-cam, by far, and I’ve seen them all. Thanks v much!
Thanks so much 🙌
I love how you actually explained and talked and Instead of just background music playing and subtitles like in other videos I see
After a year of research (well 11mo😅), buying all my equipment (which was a lot less painful than I thought), getting all tanks cycled and plants grown out, I just bought my females today to start my journey into breeding my own. Color genetics took me forever to learn and honestly I don’t think I’m much closer than where I started 😂 Why can’t they be easy like snakes 😅 I’m so nervous and excited! I have a few mom and pop pet sores that have agreed to buy some from me so I feel a little less overwhelmed in that department. Sometimes it pays to be in a rural area 😅 Thank you so much for all your videos!
Well done being so thorough hope it pays off
@@BlakesAquatics Me and you both 😅
I’m planning on breeding my bettas soon, picking one of my females from the sorority for my male. I will probably do this in a month or two. Thanks for sharing this great info
Thanks 👍
Thanks Blake….we’re going to be this finally and we appreciate your experience and tips in this video Mate😀😀
Another great video mate, always packed full of info keep up the good stuff 👍 🤙
Awesome vid Blake, loved watching this.
Glad you enjoyed it
awesome video mate, reckon its gonna help a lot of people 👍🏻
Thank you ❤. Once again a great video
Great video and information thank you
Great footage by the way!
Awesome!! My male has been building bubble nests since I got him!! I just got a couple ladies to condition! 😍
Nice comprehensive guide mate. 👍
Great video Blake!
Very nice. I will be trying
best video i've seen, thank you 🙂
Such a good video, I feel comfortable going into a project like this with this video in my arsenal. I’m going to see if my son wants to get involved! And subscribed!
Very Helpful. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Hey thank you Blake, this old American geezer might just give these bettas a go🙂👍🏻
And you might be making a whole bunch of money there old man! 😉The best of everything to you and yours and many more years to come! I would love to hear if you gave it a go! I’d like to get my 22 year old son involved in this with me, don’t know if I could do it alone though
@@melissadixon4091 do it lol
That was a great video mate.
Cheers mate 👌
Great info, enjoyed your video, thanks for sharing l learnt a lot from you, and so far yours is fantastic, not full of jargon was great and informative, interesting and straightforward, thanks
Thank you Blake ... very interesting video to watch , Betas are my Daughter's favorite fish to keep ..!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good video! Nice trick with the Styrofoam on the breeder box.
👍 Some folks have asked me about this topic. I don't do betta but will happily pass it on. Cheers and well done
Thanks so much 🙌
Great video mate
Cheers mate 👌⚰
Thank You Blake, I have watched many videos and not one has said, you answered what I wanted to know. How much water, temp. and if I leave a light on 24hrs. You answered all 3. thanks again
Nice video and very informative
Glad you liked it
I just got two males for the first time in years both very healthy. They are making beautiful bubble nests with no females so I’m considering breeding them. They are both very protective of the nests so I’m sure they’d make great father’s. Thanks for the info it helps a lot
Two male bettas can't breed
I presumed with 2 females 🤣
@@The412Devil Read the whole comment.
Great video, thanks. Does temperature influence the sex of the fry? if so at what temp would I need to get majority females? High or lower?
i really want to breed bettas but have only had one molly tank. that would be a big jump lol but i can’t wait!
You can do it!
Thank you
When the babies start swimming sticking do you take both parents out. And as they grow when do you separate them and do you just put them in little cups?
Haha as soon as the video started I'm like "oh Blake has an Anko tank too!"
They're so popular here 😂
Absolutely 😅 i have like 20
I jus got mine a few days ago I got a all white male. He’s been making bubble nest
Can you do a video on bristlenose catfish and how you raise the fry? Great video
Sure I can do that. Usually i just let them free roam tbh 🤣 they can take algae wafers from day 1
@@BlakesAquatics I’m interested
Hey mate can you do a video about medications please!?
Sure thing 👍
What do you think of the babys
Have you thought of 3D printing a replacement or better for a fluval spec v mine is currently tin foil as I find the lid that comes with not fit for purpose. Thank you
I dont have a fluval spec sorry
Hello. My male betta fish looks really interested in the female betta, but he's not building his bubble nest. He's only really circling around the female's container, do you know why and when he'll make the nest?
Awesome video! Just curious, you don’t feed your bettas during this stage do you?
I dont no, it seems to distract them and confuse the process
👍
When do the babies need to be moved?
Fishtastic
Thanks!
My female Betta is very aggressive while the male is not...when breeding she always chase the male resulting to his fins damage.
Is your female.bigger?
Is the fem bigger than the male? If yes than that is the issue, the fem being bigger scares him and kills the urge to breed
Is it normal that my female is ripping the males tail ? I separated them should I put her back in ?
Hey Blake! I plan to be breeding betas soon (hopefully)
Good luck! 🤞
@@BlakesAquatics Thanks!
@@FishmanEricRussell did you do it?
Hi. Will the male ever try to eat the hatchlings? Should they be separated after a certain amount of time? Thanks for the great vid!
I do separate but plenty of people leave them together 👍
Cool video!
What is your preferred food and timing of feedings for the fry. What steps do you take to help the grow out to be successful?
For fry i like vinegar eels, twice a day
Hey mate i have my nemo beta and he’s very interested in the female he built the bubble nest and I released the female about 9 hours ago and no breeding and she keeps following him when he approaches her how long should I wait before I seperate her and also should I seperate her in a divider or take her out of the tank?
Separate after 24 hrs and divider in the same tank. Good luck mate
My female released her eggs upon being taken out of the isolation box. Male has collected them and put into the bubble nest but he’s ignoring the female. What does this mean?
Hey there, is it necessary/ compulsory to put in almond leaves 🍃
No, even in this video i put oak leaves?
Not sure if you answer questions?but i have a pair that seem to be doing okay and I'm keeping my eye on them in a small tiny tote that you put all your nick-nacks our children's markers in but I have a 20 gallon elongated tank if I put like 4 to 5 in of water in it and gave her a hiding spots and made it natural do you think that they can naturally make this happen without me paying attention to them?
Yeah i reckon that would probably work. Id still probably separate the female where i can to give her a rest but people definitely breed them in ponds etc. I try to answer as many questions as i can 😅
What’s your approach for collecting the oak leaves? Anything special to doing it?
Nah nothing crazy, i have an oak tree in my front yard so I know theres no chemicals on them, just bag them up and keep them dry thats all
❤👍
Is it ok to breed in a 20gal tank? I plan to put a divider first leaving out about 1/4 of the tank during the breeding period and remove it once the fry are free swimming
Sure that can be done, just dont fill it the whole way up
Great video! Do the females start producing eggs with increased feeding? Or do they have to be near males?
A bit of a combination of the two
@@BlakesAquatics Thank you!
Hi Blake
I have a 60ltr tub with betta fry in it. It's filled a third of the way up so around 20ltrs of water. I'm feeding BBS and inject them in 3 - 5 times per day. It's been 2 weeks now and I noticed whilst doing a water change yesterday the water tastes like salt water and even the snails are moving to the top of the water column or out of the water. Im injecting about 120ml of salt water every feed. The fry are really healthy and growing fast. Is the salt water harmful if I'm doing 50% water changes every week?
a little salt isn't bad but that quantity I would say isn't a good idea long term. I would drain the bbs through a coffee filter before feeding fry in a small container.
Can we feed ant larvae to betta for conditioning?
Never tried that but probably could.
Is there a certain time of the year that they like to breed? Or are they just ready any time if they are in good condition?
Ready any time 👍
what camera do you use?
Sony zv1 or a sony a6100
I have 2 open 10 gallon tanks. And also I could get the bettas from pet co or pet smart right?
Of course, fish is a fish. The only downside is potential for disease
@@BlakesAquatics So I am currently thinking on breeding koi bettas. So once the bettas spawn and the fry hatch and grow what should I do with them as they probably wont have a lot of space and there will be a lot of bettas?
Thank for your great video. I tried to cross a male butterfly betta with a fancy Plakat female. The male betta made a bubble nest and female one got a big stomach but they won't spawn. My male betta is too aggressive and regect the female. Sometimes he dance for the female but the female always runs away.
Sorry to hear that
@@BlakesAquatics Blake I’d love to hear what you do in this type of situation. Is it in the male that must be replaced or the female for breeding?
@@melissadixon4091 i wouldn't replace either, id keep trying because to me it sounds like typical courting behaviour. Can take a few goes to get it right
I am considering doing a breeding , I have 2 cycled 5 gallons one for a male and one for a female , I also have a big plastic bin for the breeding , the only question I have is what do I feed the babies when they are born , I know u said vinegar worms but could I use crushed flake food or is that too big for them and also how old do they need to be to sell
I have read u can use hard boiled egg yolk for the first 3weeks of the fry’s life and then u can use other food like flakes is this correct?
I have one question. Can you use any kind of leaves?
Safest rule of thumb is any leaves from hardwood trees or fruit trees
Can you breed any type of male with any female of a different species? I have a galaxy koi male. and some vieltail females id like to breed. thank you.
Absolutely, they are all the same species the names are just physical descriptions
@@BlakesAquatics thanks for the quick response! Awesome that makes sense. My male looks very bright and colorful like yours but even more so. And female blue vieltail i think could make for some beautiful fish if they breed.
Why are the leaves (tannins) important? Are they necessary?
Provides a surface for the bubble nest and lowers the ph of the water so the eggs dont calcify too fast
Hello Blake! Thanks for this video, I’m going to start breeding betta soon. At what point should you separate the babies into different tanks? I’d just like to know before I start the process. :)
There are times I have never separated 😄 a couple of months no problem, then just take out the aggressive males as they present
@@BlakesAquatics thank you! ive got a 25 gallon tank free and i was wondering if that was too big?
So what kind of leaves r ok?
Indian almond, oak, mulberry. Basically any hardwood or fruit tree leaves that have fallen and dried
What purpose do the leaves serves?
Their natural breeding response is to blow bubble nests under leaves. I find it just helps to give them the idea to get a nest going under the bubble wrap
Good video. I prefer to choose a male (and female) with a smooth torpedo shaped body.
Just be careful especially with long finned bettas a lot of them will get curved bodies over time if you breed out that shoulder strength
@@BlakesAquatics I breed towards show standards. I find caudal peduncle strength is most important.
When do you start feeding the fry?
as soon as they are free swimming.
how many gallons is the tank thx
5 gal
Hello, will Bettas mate if the female does not have eggs ready to spawn? Thank you in advance
No, usually in those cases the male still tries and ends up killing the female
i know this video was like a year ago but what would be an appropriate size for a grow out tank for them?
I favour 20L kmart tanks
Would you need multiple or just 1 for the fry
@@BettaShrimps the fry can grow out as a group for quite a while but eventually you will have to separate males out
Cheers mate I also was going do a DIY betta rack with things from bunnings
Do I have to cycle the tank for a week or can I add them immediately
No need to cycle because theres no filter to try and grow bacteria within 👍
@@BlakesAquatics ok thank you
Did you condition your male and female first or did you just have them in the tank separated?
Yes condition first
I'm thinking about breeding my bettas soon in a few months but when do I take the male out after the babies are out? Iykwim ? What age do they need to get separated?
Once they are free swimming they can be separated, once they no longer bounce around the nest
When do you remove the male betta from the breeding tank? Is only after all the fries have hatched?
Yes exactly
How do you go about finding people to sell them too or pet stores? Would petco or petsmart buy the babies? How big do babies have to be before you sell them?
I sell them locally just online or you can sell on sites like aquabid. In my experience big box stores dont take them as they have such good prices on wholesale stock anyways. best off with small stores or online.
@@BlakesAquatics thanks for the info
oak leaf's are safe ?
Yep 👍
I've tried breeding bettas and basically gave up due to an increase of my females dieing after I attempt breeding them but I dont understand what I'm doing wrong. Ideas?
Hard to say from that information but i would say not enough conditioning
My male keeps making a bubble nest, but hes not around any females. Does that mean he wants to breed? Or is there other reasons they blow bubbles at the serface?
Yeah just healthy/ happy / keen to breed
@@BlakesAquatics thanks
Love the video, can’t get over the fish incest😂😂😂
Glad you enjoyed
When i remove the male and when do i feed the fry?
Once the fry are free swimming and 24 hrs from hatching
@@BlakesAquatics is the baby betta fry good for 3 days. When you start feeding other live food?
@@toutanglor vinegar eels 1 week microworms 1 month bbs thereafter
@@BlakesAquatics thanks
I keep hearing about jumping Bettas, but I've never seen my guy even think about it.
When should we take out the male?
Once the fry are free swimming
Hi buddy I am really wanting to breed bettas and I have tried it with 2 pairs and have a 3 pair but the first few pairs did not succeed first pair the male was scared of the female second pair the female released all the eggs while conditioning and now I have a third pair which is a platinum I have spent way to much to breed with no success☹
Hey mate sorry to hear. I cant stress enough how important it is to condition them separately. Make sure they are both super fat and happy before putting them together. Get the heat up and make the breeding area boring. The male should have a nice big bubble nest that will be worth defending even from an aggressive female
Stick at it, youll get there
My female has a white spot there and a big belly
Your video was great it was like you were teaching a class I'm trying to breed my bettas right now it's a lot more tedious then like convicts and Jack Dempsey's this sounds horrible but i bread so many convicts I used them as feeder fish :(
My Betta didn't make bubble nest 🥺
is this to help out rumball? 😉🤣
Subtle enough you reckon?
@@BlakesAquatics 🤣🤣🤣
Yup that is sooooooo easy! I'm going to do it tomorrow, but wait, betta fish and I don't have oak tree in our backyard, hmmm! That's easy indeed!
I said in the video indian almond leaves work also. Any hardwood leaves or fruit tree leaves really.
I’m wondering if my female is too small. She’s tried to mate with other females so I’m like hey, you first..? Lol but idk how small is too small…? Even if she has a sack?
They do breed surprisingly small 👍
I can’t seem to get my females to produce eggs.
Maybe needs more conditioning. Try feeding frozen and live foods
@@BlakesAquatics I feed frozen bloodworms and frozen brine shrimp. And I feed freeze dried blood worms and betta flakes about once a week
@@BlessedWithPets should be ok then. Is she presenting the egg spot
@@BlakesAquatics no she doesn’t show
The egg spot. I’ve had them for 2 months And neither of them are producing eggs
@@BlessedWithPets it is possible then that its a boy
I’ve tried with 2 different males and females and still am unsuccessful
Sorry to hear, keep at it
please nex time use cesius and kg , be izi for EU. ✌🏻
I didnt talk about temperature or weight in this video? Im Australian anyway I use those units
suction cups suck.
My guy has most of the eggs falling and can’t keep them up. Should I be concerned?
If it becomes and ongoing issue you can drop the water level lower to help him out.
No longer required 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Mother’s Day is coming … 😂😂
