    In 2020 in Late Summer I collected about 15 Monarch Eggs and raised them in a tent. It was amazing to watch the metamorphosis and a very satisfying feeling to let them fly away! Every school should have a project like that.

    This is awesome. I live in Lakeland but didn't know this. I have been raising Monarchs for 3 years

    We in Canada are trying to save them as well. The milkweed plants are a big part of there survival

    Need to stop getting rid of all the milkweed everyone sprays or pulls it that’s one of the major problems in my opinion.

      It's a fact! It's the only plant they can lay their eggs on so if there is no plant, there's no eggs. Without eggs, you won't have caterpillars and without caterpillars you won't have butterflies!

    May I suggest that folks plant native milkweed. If I remember correctly they are more nutritious for the Monarchs. And the tithonia flowers in this article are invasive as hell. PLEASE utilize NATIVE plant varieties! So much better for our environment as a whole.

    • @lepidlover0557
      @lepidlover0557 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They could be easily contained by regularly deadheading the flowers but yes I agree. If you use natives, not only will you attract more native wildlife, but you will also be preserving that species of plant as well.

      You are absolutely correct in suggesting native plants are best. I also believe a major reason for the decline in our pollinator populations is bc people are trying to help the situation by planting pollinator plants as many of these from big box stores are treated with neonicotinoids which actually kill the insects we are trying to save. 😔

    When you think about it, because of the relationship both the butterfly and the milkweed share, with the butterfly becoming endangered this also means that the milkweed itself could potentially be endangered as well. At least, certain cultivars of milkweed.
    When you create a butterfly garden, you are creating a space where nature can flourish and pollinator and plant relationships are protected. By doing so, you not only preserve the Monarch species but also different species of milkweeds and other plants
    Susan has a TH-cam channel called "Butterfly gardening inspirations". There's a lot to learn there and you also get to see the ornamental value the plants give your yard 🦋

    Why are they "endangered" ? I'm seeing a zillion every year here in Kentucky..........
    When I worked in Alaska in 2001, I was told Bald eagles were "endangered", but we had to constantly avoid flying into the thousands of them in the Ketchikan area !! One time a tourist girl asked what happened to all the penguins? Sheesh 🙄🙄

    • @lepidlover0557
      @lepidlover0557 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because in many other areas around the world , their host plant ,milkweed, is being cut down for development such as roads or buildings or sprayed with pesticides and herbicides in favor of monocultures for food crops.
      Milkweed is important to them because it's the ONLY plant species that they use to lay their eggs on, to which the caterpillars then hatch and feed on until they become adult butterflies. The plant and the butterfly have evolved together over millions of years, making the caterpillar and the butterfly immune to the poisons within the plant. In fact, the poison becomes a part of them as they're eating, it making them distasteful and toxic to potential predators.
      Please plant native milkweeds in your yard or in containers on your porch or balcony. Not only will you be preserving the monarch population but also the species of milkweed by giving them a safe space to be pollinated and produce seed.
      A single garden can only do so much but every bit counts! 🦋
