Andrea’s voice and long breath on top are astounding. This is my favorite chamber choir of all time because of the individual beauty of their voices and how they bring them together so skillfully for a perfect unison. ❤

Jeff, please carry on doing exactly what you're doing - I just love watching your response to the beauty of Voces8 performing, not least because it reassures me that I am not the only one to end up as a tear-stained wreck ...

I'm glad you reacted to this piece. I've heard it sung live by a magnificent choir (The Tallis Scholars), and it's utterly breathtaking. VOCES8 has made a splendid recording here.

    Gorgeous……
    That voice leading, too.
What gets me is how they’re all so perfectly together, phrasing together, coming off the last notes together, when there’s no obvious beat, or anyone conducting…
The sweetness and harmony of the human voice ~.
It pulls you straight into a different universe.
    Loved it, Jeff ⭐️

This is an incredible piece of music with a VERY storied history! What we hear today, is not what was heard in 1638. Over the years, it has had stories told about the piece, and it has been transcribed, and changed several times. It has become famous for the high C as sung by Andrea Haynes in this version. I, to, am amazed by her voice and her artistry. There is the continuing story that the Pope would only allow it to be sung in the Sistine Chapel, and if anyone dared to perform it otherwise they would be ex-communicated. I have copied two things from TH-cam about the Miserere. The first is the commonly held view of the piece. The second is a 10 minute TH-cam video that traces a musicologist's version of it's history. Included are portions of the Miserere from sequential periods in history performed by The Marion Consort. I have listened to many versions, and this Voces 8 version is my favorite!
"Fact : Allegri’s ‘Miserere Mei, Deus’ was written in 1638 in the Vatican, as part of his work as a singer in the Sistine Chapel. It was regarded as so special that the Pope ordered that only 3 copies ever left the Vatican: one for the Padre Martini, one for the King of Portugal and one for the Holy Roman Emperor. Playing it on other places punishable by excommunication.
Then Mozart when visiting Rome happened to hear this masterpiece, went home and transcribed the piece from memory for the entire 15 minutes.
At the time Mozart was 14."

Magnificent. I have been blessed to hear Voces8 do this twice. The first time was in a concert hall, and the antiphonal parts were done backstage, completely out of the line of sight from each other. Tge second was in the glorious Basilica Cathedral of St Louis (where the "Salvation is Created" you reviewed was performed). At one point, the separation of the ensemble was from the front yo the back. Andrea's voice absolutely sublime there.

One of my all time favorites. There are many great versions of this all over TH-cam. Can't count how many of them I've heard. For me this is only topped by "Komm oh Tod du Schlafes Bruder".

I originally debated about which Voces 8 version to request. Both are beautiful and moving. The one I requested is from the current group. The other one is from 2019 and performed live in a cathedral in Germany. You decide:

Great Reaction!! Not quite sure how Voces8 can do a version of this masterpiece, considering that the final section is supposed to be in 9 (nine) parts...my favourite version is by "The Sixteen" featuring the extraordinary voice of Elin Manahan Thomas singing the high soprano part. I know it's only 240p, but the the Voices! The Sound!! th-cam.com/video/mh6s71MicgY/w-d-xo.html

@@richardtodd7295Yes, I know - I've just watched Ben Byram-Wigfield's video on the evolution of the Miserere with no mention of any other configuration. Voces8 were singing the (generally accepted) modern version which I've always known as a 9-piece finale for verse 20, end even Wikipedia agrees with me...

@@nightwishlover8913 , you are several up on me! My formal choral music education ended in 1966 when I graduated from college. I have a degree in vocal music and conducting, but Uncle Sam interrupted my music carrier with a degree of finality. I've heard Voces 8 twice in person and I really don't know how they do what they do. They are better than any group I have ever heard. The 8 of them fill large cathedrals with sound that is amazing without amplification. I would think that they have made choices as to how to deal with 8 doing 9 parts that leave the sound beautiful. Perhaps it is magic. It certainly sounds magical!

If you ever consider doing more, like this...please:
Alleluia by Eric Whitacre, from this concert - th-cam.com/video/0JaiSGAZfW4/w-d-xo.html
3:25 secs in. This is the most beautiful thing ever recorded. If you haven´t heard this piece before..I just know, you will appreciate it. They are all made of angel hair and liquid kindness.
    There Is A Flower - th-cam.com/video/sg3wajH5th8/w-d-xo.html
King Singer´s from their best period, in my humble oipinion.
    Rheinberger´s version of Abendllied performed by Voces8 - th-cam.com/video/sIOagJryMik/w-d-xo.html
    O Magnum Mysterium - by Countertop Ensemble - th-cam.com/video/aR1WZcP2YY8/w-d-xo.html
This group..that far too little people know of, has the most beautiful blend. They deserve so much credit. They are sublime.
Anyways, this was just to mention a few, that hopefully you have not heard before. Please enjoy and take care. Thanks for your reactions.
