Currently starting my own bodyguard/private security company. Its great to be bored, though for many it can be difficult. You aren't suppose to be on any electrical devices when on the job. This makes the job hard, though its so much better then actively being on the defense or having to pull a weapon out.
I took PSD (Personal Security Detail for High Risk environments) and while I never made a career out of it, as I found most people wanted Veterans, I think it is good for the typical person to understand said fundamentals for their own health and well being, especially where a family is concerned. Simply being able to analyze an environment, look for threats, avoid them, avoid confrontation and respond properly are all essential in everyday life. Ironically enough, my father who was an OTR bus driver, taught me more situational awareness simply because he was used to being a in terrible areas and dealing with unscrupulous people. That carried over. I also am a martial artist and a shooter, so that helped beforehand as well. Life throws you curveballs, you may as well be prepared ;) Edit: I do not understand the driver texting, I suppose he is telling whomever they are about to leave, however that is poor as he needs to have his eyes and awareness about him.

You can look up executive protection training (if you're in the us, as that is strictly what I am knowledgeable on) and find numerous instructions. There's one who mainly trains on the east coast whom my boss is friends. The classes are rather expensive, I've yet to see on for less than 1,200 usd. ESI is a great set of classes.
