I grew up hearing Prince's music constantly on the radio. It wasn't until I was an adult that I came to realize his genius.
My mom’s lover was a massive Prince fan. So I grew up listening to her favs bc my mom wasn’t as huge a music fan. I’d listen to Prince but his lyrics totally went ovr my head. As a teenager I remember listening to his music & finally realizing what dude was talking about. I was like Prince a freak freak
Prince was a joker & liked 2 play tricks on fans in songs 2 see if fans were really listening. 4 instance I was hip 2 the real message of "I Would Die 4 U." But, back in the day I'd be in a club, house on tilt, DJ starts spinning "I Would Die 4 U" & I'd see couples on the dance floor mimic Prince's hand gestures in the movie 2 each other, yet had no idea the song was all about God. It had nothing 2 do with a significant other showing a sign of their love 2 protect them even by dying 4 them, yet that was part of Prince's genius. (If you're still not hip listen 2 the lyrics closely my friends?) His undercover tricky touches masking messages using one word like "Darlin" in the song lyrics on "I Would Die 4 U" & making a upbeat dance groove was what Prince set out 2 do while laughing at the same time with a smile on his face. 2 Prince it wasn't about trying 2 convert anyone 2 God, it was about what he believed God wanted 4 us all. 2 be happy showing love 2 one another, not outside in the parking lot fighting over some BS! Prince accomplished his mission in a lot of ways, he knew 4 just one moment in time he was able 2 make people around the world get up on the dance floor, dancing together being happy jamming 2 his songs while loving one another. It was the unity in dancing with each other on the floor he was after, not us standing up the walls siding against a persons race, color or creed. Many artists over years broke down racial barriers in their music. But, IMO the 2 biggest artists 2 do it in the 80's were the 2 artists people & fans still try 2 continue 2 side against each other even though they're gone today. Which is sad really, bcuz it's the complete opposite of what they were both trying 2 send us in their message in music. 2 of the greatest icons ever in music. "Prince" & "Michael Jackson." When Prince performed "Purple Rain" at the Super Bowl, I think it is the greatest performance of all time from any artist who has performed at the Super Bowl. Watching Prince perform this during a torrential rainfall that night in Miami still gives me goosebumps! Before that night, many Americans had no idea Prince could play the guitar. Turns out, Prince is one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
I totally agree with everything you said. I want that performance almost every year it's super bowl time. It's better than any other show I've seen and there have been some pretty good ones.
And so tragically underrated by the guitar world.

I have to respectfully disagree. As much as I love the Super Bowl performance, the Paisley Park performance (1999) gives me shivers. The whole performance! But I find myself looping the song from the 7.50 min mark onwards. Nothing beats that performance for me🤞🏿
We all knew Prince was a phenom on guitar and that he could play some absurd number of instruments. This was common knowledge as far back as the 80's because I knew it back when this album came out and so did everyone.
Prince was incredibly talented. I read somewhere that he self taught himself 14 different instruments. Such a loss to the music world!
Yep I did a report on him in High school (in the 80’s). Everything he plays he taught himself. Prince was a genius and I’m still sad he’s gone (plus MJ and George-my childhood)

Everyday. My co workers and I would be like, come outside and look at the sky! I remember vividly it rained for a couple days too. I work in a cemetery, & attend funerals. I will never forget!
A true genius. Could play almost any instrument, writes incredible songs, and can DANCE.
The only concert I ever waited hours on line for was Prince’s Purple Rain tour in 1985 or so. And it was more than worth it.

I had never cried when a celebrity died, til Prince. He is a once in a lifetime talent and a huge part of my teen years. I get goosebumps when his songs play. The music world will never be the same without him.
Prince actually captures a certain 80's style with this song mixed with his own insanely unique style. This isn't a song, it's a work of art to be admired by all the senses.
I had the privilige of seeing him live in Oakland before he died, and while his overall performance was incredible, it was his guitar playing that really blew me away. So many great songs from this man. Genius.
Piano & Microphone Tour at Oracle Arena? I was at the same show -- so lucky I was invited to go by someone and accepted the invitation. I was originally like, "nah, I wanna see him with the full band to get the real experience" but relented to my friend's request. Little did I know he would die a short time later. Very fortunate to have been there.

When Prince knew that he'd be doing a movie, he told them that he wanted the title to include "purple" in the title and yes, it's because that's his favorite color. And purple has always been the color of royalty -- Prince. On his first album he played ALL the instruments. I don't thing that there's anything he couldn't play -- the last count I heard was around 17 different instruments. He wrote, recorded, sang and produced all his own music. I could go on about exactly what the meaning of purple rain is, but it''s open to interpretation. Yes, he's a musical genius. I'm a die hard Elvis fan, but I'd put Prince in the same category every time. He literally mastered everything he ever touched. Gone too soon. He was like Elvis in that he made history, he made music, he made movies. Total genius! RIP.

You must know that so many of us boomers, who grew up with this music, it shaped our lives in many ways, appreciate the youth of today getting to know the music of the 60's, 70's and 80's. Remember we didn't have FM radio, many of the early tunes we listened to on tinny, cheap AM radios. We went thru so MANY 9v batteries. We listened to Casey Kasem and America's Top 40 every Sunday. We called radio stations and waited on hold for 45 minutes just to say "play the Beatles again!" Such a magical time for so many of us, and your reactions help us remember. At the end of your life, you have photographs and memories. Experience as much as you can in life. Peace to you on your musical and life path.

I was lucky enough to see prince in a small venue setting like in this movie. It was by far my favorite concert EVER!!!! I was so lucky. An incredible artist/songwriter/singer/performer. Queen is my favorite band but prince is only a tiny hair behind them in my eyes. As an independent singer songwriter he is tops. My love of him is deep. And I wept when he passed.
My teenage and early 20's were filled with Prince's music. I cried so much the day he died. He had talent and yes, massive sex appeal. That voice...the intense stare when he sang...

Prince played SEVERAL instruments .... ALL self taught. He was a musical prodigy.
The album recording of this song was from a live show. His solo was improvised. They edited the live performance slightly - cut out an extra verse and some of the original solo and added some strings - but it's still crazy that this performance was 95% live in one take and the now iconic guitar solo riff was improved.
Purple Rain is a song about love and loss, the end of times and being present with the one you love.
My sister fell in love with Prince from the time we took her to the drive-in to see Purple Rain. It was GREAT. She saw him about 7 times live afterward. I still send her a card on his birthday or death date.

If you haven't watched the movie this is from then you really should. Not only was it a great film but it really showcased how talented Prince was. He really could do it all musically, whether it was Singing, playing multiple instruments, or writing lyrics.

I cannot even begin to describe How Fly Prince was.. He is a musical master . This is from his movie called Purple Rain loosely based on his life story .. Prince was All of 5’3 and wore 3 inch heels everyday . ( except when he was hooping ( which he can ball) Prince had more swagger in his pinky then anyone else had in their entire bodies. He could play practically every instrument and was basically a music maestro. He could Dance like no other and tear up a drum kit for no good reason . His SNL cast after Oartys where he played all night long were legendary amongst the cast and crew. I am 55 j in can remember watching Purple Rain in the Theater the day it was released when I was a sophomore . We already had the soundtrack memorized . You need to watch the movie Purple Rain to understand why he was so emotional when he sang it. Some of the movie was true, some was made up, but it came out as a beautiful work of art. This came out when I was 20 and going through a hard time in my life, I was able to relate to the character of the movie and it helped me a lot. The Super Bowl performance is still the best ever because it was raining and not only did he go on with the show, he still sang it live, and it was flawless. A great artist, gone too soon. I was just shaken to the core when I heard this as a young boy in junior high. His passion, that solo, really was so touching. I cried when he passed. The only other artist whose death affected me like that was Neil Peart.

In case no one else said that this, this is a scene from his movie also called Purple Rain. I saw him in concert twice. The second time he went spotlight on a stool in the middle of the stage and just played the guitar. Playing whatever he was feeling in that moment. One of the most amazing moments ever ❤
When Doves Cry, Raspberry Beret, and 1999 are my favorite Prince songs. He was so incredibly talented. I received his Purple Rain cassette as a Christmas gift back in 1984.

There is nothing better than Prince's halftime performance at the Super Bowl in 2007. It was pouring down rain so the producer of the halftime show came back to ask Prince what he wanted to do about the show.... And Prince asked him if he could make it rain harder! Prince standing in the rain wailing on his Symbol Guitar behind a purple blowing curtain is one of the best moments in Super Bowl halftime history. It is epic. I believe the footage belongs to the NFL, so reacting to it might garner you a strike, but you should definitely watch it in your own time.

This song makes a lot more sense in a religious context. Prince was very spiritual and included a lot of religious themes in his work, and I always wondered if this song is written from the perspective of Jesus talking to someone who is questioning their faith or has abandoned their spirituality in some way - think about the line, "I never wanted to be your weekend lover, I only wanted to be some kind of friend. Baby I could never steal you from another, it's such a shame our friendship had to end". A lot of people only make time for their faith on Sundays and the rest of the time they do whatever they feel like. Sometimes life and relationships and work gets so far in the way of itself that you abandon even setting aside time for faith on a Sunday. "You say you want a leader, but you can't seem to make up your mind... I think you better close it and let me guide you to the Purple Rain" - purple is a color signifying royalty and is a color associated with Jesus in particular, for what it's worth
