I was introduced to Respighi's music when I was eighteen. I'm now 82. His music has travelled with me through decades and it has never failed to move me to wonder, to joy, to tears. It is magnificent.

I feel that Respighi's music is best appreciated by those who have studied music seriously and especially those given the opportunity of playing in a symphonic group - even as amateurs. Young musicians, fortunate enough to have played Respighi in a 'youth' orchestra would NEVER regard his compositions as 'bland'. A music critic who considers this concerto, 'bland' is beyond redemption!

@leon footguy I'm still around to reply to you. I totally agree with you. I am 71 yrs old and been attending concerts since i was 12 yrs old. What was staple programming then still applies to today i.e. load up the programmes with Schubert, Mozart, Beethoven ,Haydn etc. This is always sure to bring in the masses. Anything " off the beaten track" was and in many cases still avoided. But thanks to such sites as TH-cam the world of music has opened up for everyone. Masterpieces by many composers that you just dont hear often ( if at all) in the concert hall are made available for all music lovers to listen to and appreciate. Until recently I had no idea for example that Respighi composed such a vast output of wonderful music apart from the Roman Trilogy or Martinu wrote great symphonies ( i fell in love with his Frescos when i was 15) or Bruckner's early symphonies , especially 2 and 3 are such wonderful compositions. On a personal level i find all the TH-cam recordings from the HR Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra absolutely amazing. An extremely wide repertoire and from 2014 - 2021 absolutely wonderful audio quality and brilliant camera work and direction. The Bruckner 4th conducted by Inbal is the finest i have ever heard and the recent Bartok's Concerto for strings, percussion and celesta in the Corona era with no audience noises is truly mind blowing. May you have many more happy listening years.

Except in the finale there is very little virtuosic writing for the violin and Respighi described the solo part as being like the cantor of a choir, hence it is not attractive to many violinists. It is one of Respighi's finest works, the first few minutes of the slow movement are especially beautiful and moving.

Respighi is one of my favourite composers, but that piece was new for me. But a half hour ago I heard that, and now I said: that is the most beautiful and agonizing music that I ever heard!
It's written after the 1st world war, and I feel in this music, how was Respighi escaped to this musical Heaven of past ages. At now: in 2019 I really understand him. AND I HONESTLY THANK YOU FOR THAT MUSICAL TRIP!

I am not familiar with Cappelletti but he has a great feeling for this piece. I wish this piece would get more performances. Nobody but nobody plays it. I learned it awhile back and I did not realize how great it was until I learned it. It is very liturgical and of course the 12/8 time signature (and other uncommon ones throughout the piece) perfectly depict the 10th century chants. Respighi really knew how to write for the violin, being a violinist himself. He didn't write much - this piece, the Concerto d'al Antica, the B minor Sonata, a 5-piece suite for violin and piano (nobody plays these really)...but what he did write was quite special. His two piano concertos are also outstandingly good and rarely get performed, probably because they are complex.

now i see the review in the Chicago Tribune - and the reviewer, John von Rhein, is now one of my least liked critics as he wrote that the music of this Respighi concerto is "extremely well made but, in the final reckoning, rather bland."
In the final reckoning? So John von has appointed himself to be the final word on this ? By declaring this masterwork to be "rather bland", Mr. von Rhein has showed he is a music critic who has no feel for music.

Vaughan Williams was inspired by folksong and Respighi by Gregorian chant, both are based on modal harmony rather than standard harmony based on the circle of fifths, so despite their individual styles, their melodies have a certain resemblance at times.

Stupendo Respighi!

Ah, so achingly beautiful. Respighi can be a bit bombastic but he also can be truly profound and in complete sympathy with his musical heritage. This concerto is reminiscent of the Roman Trilogy, evoking a simmering afternoon under the pines around the catacombs, but it also reminds me of the pastoral music of Vaughan Williams, in particular The Lark Ascending. The start of the finale seems to sound remarkably English. A work of great beauty, and possibly one of Respighi's best. Many thanks for posting ! Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams premiered in 1921, Concerto Gregoriano by Respighi, premiered in 1922. Coincidence? Maybe, but it is hard to ignore certain similarities in the sound.

God this piece makes me want to jump out of my chair and dance all around the room...but that would involve getting off my chair so I think I'll just keep listening :) Trombones after 22min though...Goddamn

For those of you who feel insulted when a "Music Critic" calls this music "rather bland," take into account just two things: One is that the music doesn't do anything for him--because he has heard literally thousands of works that probably sound similar, and Two is HE FEELS (and this is the one that gets me) that the work does not merit frequent performances. That is his opinion.

This concert is inspired by the Gregorian Chants,
whose origin dates back to the times of the Roman Empire, at the beginning of Christianity. In the following centuries they became liturgical vocal music of the Catholic Church and sung, even today, only in the monasteries during the religious services.
Most of these songs that we know today, date back to the days of the Carolingian dynasty.
Probably also Vaughan Williams was inspired by religious music
