Invaluable info, used some of these tips to harvest my first spot and stalk BC black bear last May, was able to get it done with a bow and my son right beside me as well...thanks for providing some helpful knowledge along the way!

    Good informative video.
Pennsylvania has a larger population of Black Bears then New York State does.
As well as that the Black Bear's generally are often larger in size in Pennsylvania then in NYS .
However Pennsylvania's Bear Hunting seasons are much shorter then New York State's extensively long various Bear hunting seasons.
While New York State law prohibits Baiting, however the use of 1.5 oz of Liqued Attractants is legally allowed.
As far as expanding bear hunting oppourtunities. Maybe there should also be a "Special Bear Handgun" Hunting" season".
Hunters should annually update their knowledge base of all changes in all applicable regulations and laws.

Thanks for the insights, Sean. We're allowed to bait here in MN, but I have always been curious how people get it done without baiting or scents when the land is void of agriculture and non-conducive to spot-and-stalk or calling.

Been hunting bear for years now in PA. This is good information. We drive the laurels swamp and the mountain for bear. Wind is important. Funnels are important. They will slip back through the drive if not done right. If you have fresh snow and cut a track the chase is on. If you cut a track going into the swamp send a scout around the perimeter if it’s not exiting the swamp you know it’s inside. Drive it normally and keep the best tracker on the track no matter where it goes. The shot will be close mine was at about 12 yds and I had about 2 seconds to shoot. Good luck!

I'm from Ohio and bear hunt Pa. Iv'e heard that alot of pregnant bear hybernate before bear (gun & bow) season and the season seems too late and male bears hybernate before season also, this seems planned by the DNR, i also talked to a ranger in Lycoming co. and he said some bears have contracted mange, and to keep a watch for bears loosing hair, let me know what they say about possibly moving the season to an earlier date

    • @loganvana

I hunt Lycoming county PA and didn’t come across any tracks, let alone any bear sightings this past bear season. Odd because our hunting club usually harvest at least 2-4 per year. I have also heard that it’s because the bears hibernated early this year.

It's amazing at the shorness of the Pennsylvania Bear and Deer Seasons as compared to the New York long Bear and Deer Hunting seasons.
I am a Handgun Hunter and specialty bullet series inventor mainly for Black Powder cap&ball percussion revolvers, my Universal Bullets are very effective at quickly bringing down game.
I've taken several Wild Boars and while I have yet to take a Black Bear, I am confident that having successfully taken multiple Wild Boar using my Universal Bullets in Black Powder cap&ball percussion revolvers, I feel that Black Bears should be about the same as far as penetraiting thick Fat and bone.
Having hunted in both, Germany and Estonia, I am acquainted with organized Hunt drives. That's awesome that such organized drives are being used in Pennsylvania.
I look forward to one day harvesting a North American Black Bear!
Wishing you, Safe adventures and journeys.

Hey Sean I am looking forward to this coming season for bear, and am just wanting to get started studying early. I just moved here form Tennessee to over near Johnstown Pa to start my dream career as a camp ranger. But being this new I don't really know what parts of the state to hunt for bear. Don't mind driving a bit, would you mind giving me some suggestions on some public lands that would be a good option.

There are bear in Johnstown area. If you want a chance at one of the biggest bear in the world, those are often seen and shot in the Pocono area since they get fed by people so much. Some of the highest number of bear harvests per year are in my old stomping grounds which are the Clinton, Lycoming, Tioga, Potter county area of the state.

Hey Sean! is there an easy way to get a bear you killed out of the woods if you're by yourself?

    • @seansoutdoors
      @seansoutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I was fortunate in that I was on a steep hill so it was easy to drag it downhill to the bottom. When I got there, I used a game cart to wheel it out. Usually it takes a lot of people to get a bear out though. You will need a game cart if you are by yourself.

    • @seansoutdoors

No, you are to tag and then gut the animal right away, and in many methods that involves removing those parts. You then take it to the check station.

This weekend I will be hunting black bear in Pennsylvania, and I'm having a dilemma about what rifle to use. My choices are my deer rifle, a Ruger American in 7mm-08 with a 3-9x40 Redfield Revolution, my grandfathers sporterized Springfield 1903 in 30-06 with a 4x40 Leupold Gold Ring, or a Remington model 141 in .35 Remington with a 4x50 Redfield Widefield. What do you guys think?

To clarify for New York hunters if this has changed since this video was made. For black bear you are not allowed to use bait, however you are allowed to bring up to 1.5 fl oz of scent lure with you. The only exception might be the usual weird WMUs around NYC.

Is there anyway I could draw bears to my property

    • @seansoutdoors
      @seansoutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Some people bait them, but if you live in an area that does not allow that, then plant corn. In the fall bear love and seek out corn.

Sean's Outdoor Adventures yeah I’m also in Pennsylvania/New York and I’ve only seen 1 bear on each property (not during season) i do occasionally find bear sign though.I’ll try corn since I don’t usually plant it. Thanks

@@jeffsmith6717 Okay, well then your best bet is to have naturally occurring food on the property. If there is any way to have corn fields on the property, that could help to draw them in during hunting season. It is not a guarantee, but I know that where I was at in PA, farmers would have the bear move in during October and November and hang out in the corn all day and night. I've seen it myself. Aside from that, they are just to hard to predict as to where they will be. Find the good food, then you've got a chance.

Which taxidermist did you send that bottom bear to? I shot a PA bear and the rug looks almost exact (different color)

I don't remember the name of the guy who did it. That was back in 1992 so who knows if he is still even in business, but he was in the Coventry area of PA.

Clearly you haven’t been watching my uploads since this one which went up many years ago. And the most recent ones, people have complained are too short. Moral of the story is, you can’t please all the people all the time. There’s always going to be some who will not like something. Yours is the only comment of its type in this video that I’ve ever had on it... God bless ya.

God states that cud-chewing animals with split hooves can be eaten (Leviticus 11:3; Deuteronomy 14:6). These specifically include the cattle, sheep, goat, deer and gazelle families (Deuteronomy 14:4-5). He also lists such animals as camels, rabbits and pigs as being unclean, or unfit to eat (Leviticus 11:4-8). He later lists such “creeping things” as moles, mice and lizards as unfit to eat (Leviticus 11:29-31), as well as four-footed animals with paws (cats, dogs, bears, lions, tigers, etc.) as unclean (Leviticus 11:27).

I won't eat a bear, but I might like a rug. Maybe I could find a taxidermist who will barter the meat for tanning my bear hide. Either way, I might get a bear tag when I go deer hunting just in case I run into one.

This was very helpful. I’ll be sure to incorporate this into my hunting plans. Does god also have advice on cooking temperatures? I’ve read conflicting well done temps. I prefer Fahrenheit but can work with Celsius. Thanks in advanced.
