Triang L1 Restored. Vintage OO model Railway locomotive

  • I recently saw a video by @Mr Snooze on TH-cam featuring two Triang L1 locomotives, one of them was 1757 in Southern Malachite green, this reminded me of very happy times early on maybe 1977 or so when dad would bring his 1757 L1 to run on my railway on Sundays.
An L1 was one of my two original locos, but was in BR green and numbered 31757, in later years dad repainted both his and my L1 into SR 1938 livery and upgraded the models with 5 pole motors and new wheels.
However I remember at the time being slightly sad that the bold 1757 would be lost.
Back in 2006 dad gave me an original Triang 31757 in BR livery so I had back my original, but after seeing Mr Snooze’s video I really wanted to try and add 1757 in its bright livery back to the collection.
From Rocket Railways I obtained one in need of TLC and this video will show you what I did and how I got on.

I remember this engine in BR green and being very disappointed when I realised the real thing was painted in lined black, as it looked fine in green. A very interesting video.

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited No - I used to buy Trains Illustrated and one was pictured in the magazine. I was spotting when they were around, but I had no money to get from the Midlands to the Southern Region until later. These engines were regularly used as pilots on the very heavy Night Ferry express.

So sad to hear about the passing of your dad. I totally understand what you mean. My father passed away two years ago and I had to do the same tasks of clearing, selling and dealing with solicitors! I inherited my Dad’s railway models and now intend to create my own layout.

Lovely video Mike, and can empathise as have been very sick in hospital while you hv been gone. I also had to sell our uk house last year in middle of CV19 and it was a nightmare. I love that L1, just shows what a nice loco you could get without spending hundreds. I have 2x L1s but they seem to be Thompson 4-6-2 class. Lovely work. Forgetting the wheels for a moment it's amazing what a difference a good paint job can do when comparing the original with your dad's model. Really brings out the quality of the triang tooling. Never got around to buying an L1 sadly. My favourite was hornby's Sir Dinadan. I loved the finish, like it had been specially cleaned for an important train. The fall plate was a nice touch too. Happy times! Always thought the L1 would look good paired up with it.

Great restoration Mike one of my favourite classes of Southern loco, I've said it before but would love to see Hornby do an upgraded version of this, but perhaps the tooling no longer exists. Great to see her running again the driving wheels don't seem to have too much trouble over the points. I have a couple of painted black ones with scale driving wheels fitted and a plug for tender pickups, if I think of it I'll send you a couple of photos on Messenger. Very enjoyable video, take care

    • @johnd8892
      @johnd8892 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

My understanding is that when the short lived move was made from Margate to Sandwich was made that all tooling not being in China was scrapped for both Hornby and Scalextric. Saving storage space and for the scrap value of tools that management at the time believed would not be re run since perceived as out dated by the market.
So items that could have been candidates for a re run later like the Rocket and APT were re tooled from scratch.
A new L1 would have to be in enough demand to justify all new tooling.
That demand helped by this video and the Mr Snooze ones also.

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited yes I recall that too now. So doubly impossible for an L1 with the old tooling.

just found some pictures of the southern L1 and compared then with the LMS P2 you suggested then I remembered the rails of sheffield/ Dapol D1 they are about to release. On finding these pictures it seems these 3 locomotives look very similar to the untrained eye, I'm sure their must be differences but they are not to dissimilar.

I've just discovered your channel, and I'll hit the 'subscribe' button when I finish typing. I have two little points on this clip: 1) My wife and I wanted an L1 when we started to build a layout in the loft, and I found one in the window of a shop in Bournemouth, complete with price tag, but the shopkeeper refused point blank to sell it to me. Never did find out why! 2) What track do you use, please? I use Peco Code 100 and my 1977 ALBERT HALL is fine on normal track but derails on Streamline points. Using the same gauging tool as on my other locomotives, the back to back measurements seem right. Nobody - so far - has been able to tell me a reason, but I suspect flange depth . . .

    • @ModelRailwaysUnlimited
