i played in front of 100 and 1000s of people, without ever having been famous! Talking about busking, which is a great way to learn performin and dealing with all sorts of reactons from all sorts of people. It is something most bands don t even think about, whereas if they did an acoustic set on the street, they wold not be paying for rehearsalrooms but actually rehearse and get paid for it!
Seems like really solid advice to me. I remember many, many years ago watching Clutch play at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT. One of the opening bands was someone I had never heard of - Mastodon. They came on and played one of the most ferocious sets of music I'd ever seen in my life. Needless to say, I immediately bought their album (Remission) right after the show and became an instant fan. By the next year, they were playing headlining slots in pretty big places and a few years later playing monster arenas.
Friends and family will only support for so long. So if you have to bring them into a show to fill seats do everything you can to make that show count. Yes, make every show count, but remember not to exhaust your friends and family out on forgettable local shows.
Thanks man! I'm 20 and only just starting a band so I may be pushing it a little, but trying to pull things together. Your advice is really really helpful, and I'm glad I found ya!!
I would love to see you make a video about niche music....jazz and blues. I love your videos, but I feel they are mostly for pop/rock artists in their 20s with no attachments and obligations...
Hi Damian. I love this video. I know I’m a bit late to the party, but would you mind going into a little bit more detail about what a band/artist must do at each stage? One small example being, when filling a 50 cap local venue, do you mean sell 50 tickets or just fill the venue with people? I’m just a little confused about how an artist knows how to and when they’ve reached each milestone. I realise that you laid it out clearly in the context of this short video, but it would be great to hear you go a bit deeper on the subject. I apologise if this seems a big ask as I know you are putting out loads of great content, It’s just that I found this video extremely helpful and enjoyable. Many thanks.
Yes! Been waiting for something like this. This is gold, and happy #askdamo is back! Would you take instrumentals and are you looking for a specific genre?
This channel is the lords word. Maybe now my bandmates will practice more than once a week and actually get off their asses and work :) Sincerely, a 14 year old drummer who can actually count past 4
Damian Keyes Can you sometime do something about younger musicians, because it's especially hard to navigate all the deals, social interactions with listners, and finding an audience. We are having that problem right now as we are a relatively new band, where as kids budgeting and shows are a huge problem
Ok I understand you play venues bigger and bigger once your set list is tight, but the question is WHAT are the tactics you do to get people to your shows? Facebook ads? Press? What?
i sent an email for a video idea and received a real rude email in reply :/ it left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth... but please do a video on making low budget music videos!
H Rotten hey dude which email did you send it to and what was the reply? I’m sorry you received that it wasn’t from me... let me look into it. Can you send it to me on my email damo@dkmanagement.co.uk

So, what if you have no friends or family to start out with? Say you’re brand new in town and you’re a solo artist.
Really nice one
YOU CAN EVEN BEGIN BY HAVING THE PEOPLE ON YOUR BLOCK ALL KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!
