      @Evan Baker
Yeah, Mr. Baker it's a shame.
Let me guess, your learning the old 6 string and your buddy is on the bass. The bass is so much easier, not putting bass player down. It's just when your beginning the bass is easier then the 6 string guitar, until you get into more complicated things like slap playing. Now you know he's not putting the time and effort that you are. So what do you do, gotta let him go. Feelings get hurt. But don't let it stop you. They say to be an expert at anything it takes 20,000 hours. That's alot of effort.

@@gohjohan I’m 14 and I’ve been getting private lessons for guitar since I was 10. I started listening to all kinds of music and landed with extreme metal and even some jazz too. Age has nothing to do with work ethic. If you’re lazy, you’re lazy, if you’re not, you’re not. @@bruhbruh3642 to me age can be a barrier, especially learning new concepts. Took me a long time to understand the music theory. Learning the 12 notes was the easy bit. How they formed to make the chords and scale, that was hard. Same for rhythm. Eventually I had my break throughs after years of hard work and learning from others.
I don't have that musical ear like others, so I rely on the music sheets, theory and developing my listening skills along the way.

My little brother is 13 years younger than me, he started learning guitar seriously last year and I’ve been teaching him stuff everyday. He has a background in percussion so we’ve been jamming for years, but he really wants to start a band now, and he’s getting better everyday. He’s into good music: Deftones, the Strokes, Interpol, 311, Turnstile.
We’ve been trying to brainstorm what our band/sound is going to be, each of us writes songs but our styles are unique to us. When he was a baby/little kid I had a band a band with my high school friends, we played shows and wrote songs, had a blast doing it. We were called The Herminators, terrible band name I know but what ya gonna do? It was 2002!
I tell him all the time about how cool and fun it was to have that camaraderie with my band mates/friends. It wasn’t all great but man those were some awesome times. I wish I could do that again.

I'm learning scales amd theory, but it's similar enough to guitar that it was a nearly instant conversion. Playing with fingers, has actually started to shape more ability on guitar that was locked away previously, so yes, be more than one instrumentalist.

      Mr.Walley,
You, Good Sir are correct. I grew up in a small town. I began learning guitar before I was old enough to drive. Within biking distance, a new mom and pop music store opened. They didn't carry Fenders or Gibsons. In fact they had a sign in the store that read, don't even ask for a Fender or Gibson. I asked the owner why?
As I'm looking at guitars I never herd of, and they were not very good. He told me because Fender and Gibsons were way overrated. Even though I was young, I still knew that at that time they were probably the best you could buy(Fender or Gibson). This was some 45 years ago. I think the owner was to proud to tell me he couldn't afford to buy 10 or 20 at a time. Belive it or not, there still open. Guess what, now they sale the overrated Gibsons and Fenders, because now there established and have the credit for them. I actually bought, back in the latter
80s a MIII Deluxe super strat type of a Gibson. I used to go there because they were close to my home to buy strings. And that day I walk in, they had Fenders and Gibsons. I wish I never sold that MIII Deluxe. I bought it for around 400.00.
I think after all the time that has passed there probably worth a lot more, but not only that I loved that guitar. Maybe one day I'll run into another one. Have a great day, stay safe.

In it's own way it was like those blues jams you would see on TV for Clapton's Rehab Center, without the big names. Or the Custom Shop guitars. Just ask folks even if they aren’t musicians. That’s how I found jams in Horse Cave and Vine Grove Kentucky. There are Facebook pages that cover this base. Old Time Open Jams advertises a lot of open jams all over the country and their members will guide you to a jam if you’re coming through an area. Check out societies. Central Mississippi Blues Society has an open jam night on Mondays at a local restaurant in Jackson. They ask everyone who walks through the door if you want to play whether you come with an instrument or not. Their backing band kills and they are supportive of almost all skill levels though you should come with a song prepared. There are other blues jams in Jackson and NOLA that start at midnight but they are for more advanced players. A lot of festivals have jams going 24 hours a day, and larger festivals that draw people from all over are networks to musicians at all skill levels from all over including people local to you. Live music, you can usually pick up on the musicians in the crowd and just ask about jams. I’ve moved often and these are tricks I’ve learned.

When I was 15, the only people around to play with were 35-year-olds. Probably should have noticed the life hack lurking in that little fact. But this was the 80s. Hacking was for Matthew Broderick and computers named Joshua. And we didn't have lives, to hack or otherwise. And we walked uphill both ways in the snow...

Why don’t more stores get a liquor license or a pop machine, a few couches, a coffee table covered in guitar magazines? Make it inviting to spend some time there. Maybe forget the liquor license. Drunk guitarists and walls full of Gibsons may not be a good mix.

I am in my Mid-40's... started playing about 4 years ago... was going to do my first Open Mic (in April of 2020) and was working on making some musical friends there. They still haven't brought the Open Mic nights back. Might go ahead and try some of the other tips. Also, I do work about a block from Berklee - so I could probably just pay some students to jam with me... maybe

I was at the grocery store, I believe the cereal aisle, when I was recruited. I tried to get out of it by saying I had no skill. But alas, skills are not required. For the drummer we just amuse ourselves by inviting people and reading their excuses. We don’t need bass because we are already fairly stout. (wish there were two snakes agreeing not to tread upon one another instead of one insisting he get his own way above all else).

Here's A Funny Story For Everyone!
I Used To Carry Mail. One Day My Supervisor Sent Me To Another Station To Help Out. There I Met A Bass Player Who Every Year Held A Birthday Jam At His Home. He Had Built A Low Riding Enclosed Stage In His Back Yard & Would Even Set Up A Pavilion For His Guest To Sit & Listen Throughout The Event. I Asked If There Was A Setlist & He Said "No, Just A Open Good Natured Jam Session." He Also Invited Some Old Musician Friends Whom Included Another Bass Player Who Brought His Girlfriend. Since Our Host Was Back & Forth Tending To Party Matters, This Guy Decided HE Should Take Up The Session Leader Mantle. Every Song I Suggested Was Crassly Declined! There Was No Goodwill Amongst Musical Brethren To Be Found. I Studied Theory So There Would Have Been No Problem Brainstorming Among The Others So Far As Chord Progressions Were Concerned. I Took A Seat & Got Some Food While He & The Others (Whom I Learned Later Had ALL Been In A Group TOGETHER) Held A PERFORMANCE, Segueing From One Tune To Another Mid-Song As If They Were Auditioning For Earth, Wind & Fire!!!! Jam Buddies Are The Proverbial "Haystack Needle" These Days...... 🙃
