I wouldn't worry about your skill level. By doing a project your skills will improve just by working on it anyway. Just go for it when you have the time, money and energy. Trust me, as you get older it is harder and harder to do a project like this.

Yeah, I think it is very cool. I just wouldn't recommend trying to animate almost 2 hours runtime. That is all consuming! The animator said he works on it 7 days a week for 2 years. There goes your social life. At my busiest I only animated 5 days a week on my large projects.
