Gon is colossal brain. Gon is clever, cheeky, super intelligent, the instinctive kind. he's not "simply" anything, he's quite a complex character, many shades of grey. dude's extremely elastic and kinetic. and he also has numerous human flaws. just a top notch character.
I believe what Hanzo was saying at the end to the chairman was essentially: You guys put Gon first because you knew he’d never give up. If he did there wouldn’t be more fights. You did this matchup on purpose and that’s pretty messed up

Especially with Illumi since he goes a lot for missions/family business so he could be hired to kill some examiner or hunter in the association. Then again there is no reason to think that specifically, so I was just pointing out it is not clear
Lavernius Tucker naruto has a LOT of strategic fights in its long run. Tbh i think it is still the best shounen when it comes to combining strategy with hype action. We all know and admit that Close to the end of its run, it has gotten more about god level shinobis doing jutsus rather than strategy, but that doesnt mean that we should dismiss hundreds of episodes and dozens of strategic/action fights that came before that.

This anime just debases your expectations. When I first watched this, I was expecting the standard main protagonist to get power boosts by believing in himself and his friends cheering him on. Nope! Hanzo just dominated the match and was still not able to win.
And the best thing is they keep the power levels consistent and also keep on hinting that Gon and Killua got unmatched potential so they learn very fast compared to others

It's weird but it's also genius. It's amazing that Togashi was able to come up with something so different and nasty just by putting the slightest twist on the traditional idea of a tournament. It takes a while for the true nastiness of this phase to sink in, though. But the shocked reaction of the other examiners to the tournament bracket when Netero revealed it to them privately a little while ago definitely isn't over the top. It's far nastier than all the previous phases combined. Netero is absolutely ruthless, even if he has a soft spot for Gon. That man's soft spots are still as hard as steel most of the time.
4:18 "Gon hasn't done anything" I hope you mean in the sense of a longer fight, but he's done the most out of everyone. Using his instincts to get through the challenges, him carrying the three people on his back while holding his breath and being stealthy and fast enough to catch Hisoka off-guard and take his number. So having speed and muscle strength ain't bad for a start to Gon's fighting prowess.
I mean, it wasnt like gon was planning to endure the fight for so long for whatever reason, he was literally just not willing to give up because hes just that sttuborn and there was no way he would simply give in He just made that "lets think of something else" comment specifically regarding hanzos comment of cutting his legs At the end of the day gon is still just a child after all :P
Yeah, Netero’s first impression of Gon was that he was very honest and innocent. He wanted to make sure he had the survival nature to be a hunter so he wouldn’t just graduate and then die shortly down the road. 😛 At least, that’s why I think he paired him with Hanzo. His expression seems to say that too.
gon's a survival alright. he's indestructible by someone else, only Gon could destroy himself -- i think Netero saw that... so he paired Gon with Hanzo to see what Gon would do in the case of going against someone who is obviously stronger in physical abilities. it's a test of mind and will, and Gon's got that too. basically Hisoka is the strongest there, and Gon already won Hisoka over long ago in Zevil island. Gon was always going to win. Netero just wanted to see the interaction and also the interaction of the crowds toward the situation. i mean it's a social experiment after all.
Yeah this ain't your typical shonen. The outcome may feel the same, but the way HxH does things is amazing. The show makes you actually think. Also gives a point to testing willpower in a shonen.

What I love about this episode is that it finally REALLY puts into perspective that this is not a happy go lucky, kids show. Plenty of ppl have died at this point, only 20 episodes in. But none of them really resonate since they're not important. Now you get to see Gon suffer for over 3 hrs and it finally makes you feel like this show is kinda serious!!
The thing with his head clearing… he was hazy after Hanzo concussed him multiple times and beat him up, but then when he broke his arm the pain sharpened his focus bc of the adrenaline.
I think the implication is that if Gon doesn't want to accept a win after waking up, Hanzo continuing on as the loser would have rendered the entire rest of the tournament moot if Gon were to get his way. Which means that in order for Gon to insist on his loss past that point would require forfeiting the tournament altogether, making him the only person who fails, rendering the tournament _doubly_ moot. At this point, Gon can't fail without making the entire Final Phase pointless, which Hanzo wants the examiners to disallow since he feels that Gon has earned the win, and that the process of the Hunter Exam should be respected. Thus, Hanzo insists he's lost the match even if Gon were to later insist on his own defeat instead. He's preempting a scenario where the match would have to be redone because it has no winner. To put it in the shortest way possible, he's calling dibs on being the loser of that match, so that Gon will have no way of calling that outcome into question anymore.
