As a former teacher I absolutely wanted to use the preferred name and pronunciation of my students as they desired. It's a courtesy that all people should offer others. I really don't like it when people use different versions of a person's name. For example, my name is Richard. That's how I introduce myself. I don't want to be call "Rich" or "Richie" or "Dick". I wish people to use the name I give them because it is MY name, not theirs, and they should respect how I introduce myself. Good video. I think all people should consider this topic, and you covered it well! Stay well, my friend.
Absolutely! This is important! Some people just automatically assume you're okay with shortened versions of your name, even when you're not. Of perhaps the "cuter" versions are reserved for family or friends, and not just anyone!
I get that. As someone who has gone by every imaginable nickname of my deadname, i feel it doesn't matter as much. It's like each version of the name becomes intrinsically tied to the space/mood where it is most commonly used.
I was thinking about that too, how what you want to be called can depend on who is calling you that, whether it's friends, family, a work environment. Interesting how that works!
I try to always be careful to use the names people prefer. I had a friend in high school who shifted from the shortened version of her name to the full version and she had to correct me a few times just because my brain wasn’t used to using her full name yet. But I got there, and now that’s how I always think of her. My first and last name are both common female first names in the US, where I live, and I’ve learned to respond to both of them, especially at doctors offices. For some reason, there they very often just use my last name as if it were my first name… it doesn’t bother me particularly, because I know they’ve just glanced at my chart and their brain grabbed onto the first “first name” they saw and there’s no malice in it. It can get confusing though to make sure they’re actually talking to me and not another person who shares my last name 😅
When I changed my name I chose a new first name and adopted a second and third name I'd used unofficially before in different circles. They are all me and I could naturally use them in the old contexts and groups. Any friendly variations are fine too, though I might not notice it was directed at me if they started with that and I didn't already know them. If someone was totally mangling the name by the way they pronounce it and cannot or will not learn, a translation or something (my new first name actually means a thing - different language, same thing) recognizable and not disagreeable would do for talking. In documents the name and spelling obviously should be correct.
Nice point. Personally I admire your opinion, and I would try to implement it when I was on a situation like that. But personally I have some resistance to tolerate Americans mispelling my name: for me, they are culturally too egocentric, and I don't like them to behave that way with me and my people, forcing us to be as they imagine us: we have a soccer player called "James", pronounced with spanish rules, but they mispronounce him and everybody has to tolerate it, but I find it sick, because they live correcting everyone about everything but we can't do the same, and I find it politically opressive. I repeat it: I admire you, and I'd allow nearly everybody to be as they feel comfortable... but I have some personal limits with some people. 😔 I hope your trip was great, and I hope your return to the academy is as well. 🙂 Good luck.
Not everyone needs to feel the same about their name, don't worry. Your experience is completely understandable! I used to think I didn't want my name to be pronounced the American way, but I realized it wasn't actually that bad. But that's just on a personal level. I know the mispronouncing has some cultural undertones as well, and the unwillingness to try and learn (part of) another language!
I always try to pronunce names correctly, even if they are hard (above all with my Asian colleagues). Sometimes they tell me an easier escamotage , like nicknames or their chosen western name . I have a question for you, if you want to satisfy my curiosity . As your name is a new name, why did you choose a biblical name and not a Nordic o pagan one? In many pagan tradition name has power and let you doing sacred o magic. For example there is the story of the guy who dared to reveal the secret name of Rome and the was put to death . No one now knows the true name of Rome.
Well... I chose this name while reading the Bible for fun when I was 11. I am not just interested in paganism, but the history and use of religion in general. Also, I am Polish, and Dawid is a pretty popular men's name, which also happened to fit with my last name. I know many trans people chose a name that is English or international, but I really wanted a name that feels like home and doesn't look out of place with my polish last name! Hope that helps :)
