Plant Care & Repot : Alocasia Amazonica/Alocasia Polly | Houseplants Propagation

  • Time to transplant one of my favorite - Alocasia Amazonica / #Alocasia Polly! I had so much fun separating the baby Alocasia and finding so many little #AlocasiaTubers! I think this guy has been enjoying living in my home, and in my opinion, it is not the hardest plant to care for! Give it warm temperature, humid environment, indirect sun, and it will probably give you new leaves every month! Hope you enjoy this video! Comment and subscribe! Love- Jolene

    just got my Alocasia 2 weeks ago at Lowes , it was on clearance for $7 since it had a few yellow spots on the leaves, i thought they were sunburn, to me its no bigee, it just uncurled a new leaf for me , i love it, it looks so majestic but just realized today the pot did not have a drainage hole, i had to review this video how to repot it, and hopefully will be lucky to find some tubers on mines , as always love your videos ;)

    I’ve done a lot of research on the subject and I found that fungus gnats feed on rotting roots and fungus due to overwatering and lack of proper drainage in the soil mixture. They can be helpful by getting rid of the dead matter but annoying because they fly around. Use a horticulture spray to get rid of them.
    My suggestion would be to not agitate the roots so much when transplanting. It’s OK to massage them a little bit, but you want to leave the majority of the root ball intact with the soil from the pot it’s currently in since it contains the microbes that it is accustomed to. Repotting a plant is very stressful for it so you want to do as little damage as possible

    • @Theresmore2lifethanthis
      @Theresmore2lifethanthis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was thinking about this!! Out of curiosity do you have any idea on what type of soil and fertilizer would be best for this plant?!

    • @fabulously695
      @fabulously695 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Depends on your soil mixture and experience. In my personal experience and from what i've been taught, with the exception of pine trees, you always want to remove all of the soil from a plants root ball whilst being as gentle as possible. Especially when organic matter such as coir or compost is used, over time it degrades and essentially clogs up the roots. Whilst it degrades, is becomes much less free draining and anaerobic. If you use a soil mixture that is primarily inorganic, then this will not be so much of a problem.

I have herbs and a few fruits and veggies outside, but I need ideas for indoor plants! Any update on the tubers now? Just curious. What you did is very courageous! I'd be too cautious of stressing out the plant. I also read somewhere before that African Masks actually like a tighter fit in their pot, so I'm reluctant to repot until I can see that the plant is obviously root-bound and not putting out any new leaves. Just a thought!

    Hi! I have an alocasia polly that I've recently repotted, and I'm sad to say that she's no longer doing so great. All foliage was green prior to repotting, but since repotting, several leaves have experienced browning/yellowing around the edges. I thought that this might be a symptom of root rot at first, so I ended up removing it from the pot once again and examining the roots. (I believe that at least a solid month passed between this and the initial repotting.) I removed all the soil. To my surprise, the roots looked entirely healthy. I divided the plant during this process as well because I wanted to have another plant incase this one didn't make it. This was about 3 weeks ago.
    The plant hasn't looked any better since, and in my panic and frustration, yesterday, I repotted my plant once again into a slightly larger pot. It was extremely root bound (wrapped around the outside of the soil several times over) so I thought that maybe I'd finally found the solution to the problem. It has now occurred to me, though, that what the plant might really be experiencing is transplant shock. The roots were tampered with quite a bit, especially when I divided the plant. I feel very bad about the ordeal, as I've realized that in my efforts to help my alocasia, I have probably hurt it.
    Anyways, do you have any recommendations for helping alocasia recover from transplant shock/root damage? Do you think that my plant might still recover? Sorry for such a lengthy post. Thank you!

    Just subscribed! I'm curious if you have suggestions to keep the plant away from pets? I am considering a macrame hanger for my alocasia just to make sure my kitties and plant are safe from each other. Thanks for the video!

      Thank you! I used to struggle with the same problem, lol. After getting sprayed by water and having a few bad diarrhea, my dog learned his lesson. But my recommendation is, of course, put the plants up higher so your kitties can't reach them! Macrame is a great solution!

      What about smearing a little gasoline and sprinkle with red cayenne pepper. They'll only do it once!

    Where do you place the Alocasia in your home to better thrive...

    I reported one the same way you did about 2 years ago and it died. Not dormant but dead. I have another and he's thriving but he's due for a repot and I'm nervous to not just pull it, place it and add dirt. I dont think I'm going to break down the soil this time
