    I do now highly recommend the Atomos Shinobi for the Pocket OG. The key setting detail is to keep the Shinobi at 16:9 and to only use the OG's 1.35:1 crop bars. This will allow the recording display data to show on the Shinobi.
    For those who might be interested. This is a video showing how I transport and use my BMPCC OG.
    The lens in this video and the one I use most is the Nikon 50mm Ais F1.4. Despite having most Nikon Ais primes the only other two I use regularly are the 24mm F2 and the 135mm F2.8. (I use the 135mm both with and without the speedbooster.)
    The video I went on to film is here, (Welcome Back Brighton)
    • Welcome back Brighton ...
    As standard my internal camera settings are,
    Raw | Film | 25 fps
    ISO 800 | WB 4000K | 180 Shutter Angle
    (ISO unchanged in grade)
    I keep zebras on at 100% (but I don't necessary expose to the right)
    Mic input at line level 10%
    Tascam output line out +12db
    NDs used.
    Hoya 62mm Variable Density x3-400 Filter (purchased from Wex £120.00)
    Step up rings to here from 52mm
    1x Opteka ND 4x/ND4 (Ebay at £5)
    1x Jacobs Super Slim ND4 (Ebay at £5)
    Grading Notes (NB I am absolutely NOT a colorist)
    For each edit I create global setting which I copy onto all clips
    Camera Raw tab | Gen 1 | Colourspace Blackmagic Design
    Lut = Blackmagic Cinema Camera Film REC709
    ‘Welcome Back Brighton’ specific settings
    Colour Temp 4800 (varying slightly)
    Tint I always set to 17
    Highlights always dropped to -100
    Shadows up to around 20/30
    Contrast up to around 40/60
    (I always drop the green using curves in every shot as standard)
    Thanks to Ken for filming this. It wasn't something we had planned to do so apologies if the video is a little rough around the edges. Ken runs a very interesting and informative camera channel which will have a lot of new content coming soon.

    Pretty neat and tiny setup. I used a similar setup for a short doc but later on I got frustrated in assembling the rig and putting things back into the bag. I also disliked how easily fp970 batteries popped off from the adapter accidentally, and I replaced that thing with a v mount battery. Eventually I built a much longer rig looking like an ENG camera with a shoulder pad where all the parts are connected serially to the 15mm rods. My monitor/recorder is now attached with a NATO rail and I can easily move it from the middle of the rig on the side with a 15 mm rod attached to the handle. I use either Zoom F2 or Zoom H5 as an audio recorder, depending which kind of mic I'm using. The only thing I need to remove now is the shoulder pad.

    • @PurpleBikeMedia
      @PurpleBikeMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow. I'd like to see that! It is a pain constantly building and taking it apart for transport! I like longer rigs which would come with more stability. Definitely see the appeal of a NATO rail for the monitor.

    Thanks for sharing I got three of those cams, I bought two used ones to make sure I have them like for ever lol. I use a gimbal and a very light lens or a tripod. I got the tilta and the matte box with a used bmpcc but I only use the tilta rig on a tripod. I´m thinking the weight of the tripod maybe equals out the heavy rig you got there handheld so stability would probably be the same but one would gain more with static shots with a tripod.

    • @PurpleBikeMedia
      @PurpleBikeMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is an interesting balance. For a lot of 2019 I used nothing but a tripod and I was so happy with the shots I was getting. But some of my favourite films have that fluid organic handheld look and its something I have been trying to learn ever since. I love that you have so many of the cameras. I am thinking of getting the Mico for the same sensor as well as another speedbooster for ef as well as Nikon.

    • @BurninSven1
      @BurninSven1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@PurpleBikeMedia A combo of handheld and tripod shots isn´t that what´s been used throughout film history. Thinking about it a little I think that that probably is the way to go even now, never mind gimbals and stuff. So I think you are on the right track. I actually made a shoulder rig myself out of Ikea cutting board and curtain rods. I even added "crane" thing you can strap to your belt lol but I forgot about it. Two things that is more expensive with a gimbal is focus and zoom but handheld it´s no problem you can do it by hand.

    • @PurpleBikeMedia
      @PurpleBikeMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BurninSven1 yes! I agree. That is the way to go. I find nothing so off putting than an incredibly smooth gimbal shot. Hello! Thanks! Yes, its tricky, I have found that it is difficult to see if you are recording on screen if you have the 2.4:1 crop bars active. Generally the, the Shinobi, for the price it is great and works well across all my cameras.

    • @PurpleBikeMedia
      @PurpleBikeMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I've just realised there was some user error to my setup with the Shinobi. The trick is to not activate the 2.4:1 crop on the Shinobi and to only set the crop with either 25/50/75 percent opacity on the OG. That way you can compose for the crop with the Shinobi and the recording sign is clear. Took me years to realise I had set it up wrong! Still using this setup and its working a treat!

      @@rolandtorda5570 Hi, yes, I now fully recommend the Atomos. It took me ages to realise what I was doing wrong. I'd been composing shots in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Initially I had been using the crop guides built into the Atomos but those black guide bars hid the onscreen data coming from the pocket. I couldn't easily tell if I was recording or not just using the Atomos display. It was only when I set the Atomos to full 16:9 and added the crop/composition bars within the pockets menu that I realised it was the far better option.... I hope all that makes sense! Mate, you shouldn’t be wary of putting yourself out there - what a cool rig! By far the most inspiring and accessible I’ve seen. And you’re so casual and approachable about it all. Love the attached TASCAM - looks brilliant!
    Would you mind explaining the NDs again? You’ve got a couple of fixed NDs screwed to a Variable ND? Any drawbacks to using so many?
    Also, I’m a big fan of your Nikon 50mm lens. Seems like a stunning picture. I had one similar but had to give it back to my boss after he lent it to me - was hard parting with it.
    Thanks for your video! Awesome to see how you make your videos.
    On another note, how do you deal with being out there with a rig? I’m still finding it difficult shooting in public with rigs due to being anxious about it.

    • @PurpleBikeMedia
      @PurpleBikeMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks! Really appreciate your comment. Yes, I'm so pleased with the tascam. It's mics are so nice I splashed out on the wind shield add on. I like that it's accessible, it's all mostly cheap eBay finds.
      Not many downsides to the nds. Indoors is a hassle experimenting with how many you need. The coffee roastery video had one or two nds on but afterwards I realised I should have taken them all off. I nearly always film in bright sunlight so the nds manage ok. On dull weather days it's hard to get the life and contrast into the footage.
      Walking around with a massive rig did take a while to get used to. Back in 2019 I started small with a tripod. It's gotten bigger over time with experimenting more with handheld use. Last summer I kept my distance on the seafront without approaching people which helped. But I've found that when I do ask people their permission they're always do happy and welcoming it boosts my confidence to be out.

      @@PurpleBikeMedia Thanks Ioannis! And apologies for the late response! I think confidence (or lack of) plays a massive part in this kind of work so I’m glad you’ve got some and enough to go and make this kind of work!
      Thank you for your response. It’s videos like this that make me realise I should kit out my OG BMPCC and use it to its full potential before even thinking about upgrading and succumbing to the old Gear Acquisition Syndrome! I think sometimes what puts me off BM cameras is people tend to push the grade so far away from a natural looking image - so it’s great to see beautiful images still in the realm of naturalism.
      Anyway, thank you! And stay safe over there!

    Nice setup. I'm curious as to why you stack the ND filters like this? Is there a benefit to this rather than just using the one Variable ND filter? Also, what is the purpose of using the Tascam and not just an external mic? is this for the additional pre-amps?

    • @hbp_
      @hbp_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm guessing the quality of the variable ND isn't so good at the end of the scale and then the other thing is that the native ISO is 800 and you really don't want to lower it because it eats the dynamic range so fast.
      The Tascam recorder is there because there is no way to record good quality audio with the camera. The recorder is probably only connected to the camera for easier audio sync.

    • @PurpleBikeMedia

I've been trying to figure out what is responsible for that 'look' which we can't replicate. And after much contemplation - I have nothing - ha ha. This thing is a time machine that really does some type of black magic to make it look like film. There is something about the sensor, the motion cadence, some behind the scenes firmware tuning of the frame rate or shutter, color science tuning that somehow makes it look film from the 70's. It could be design - it could be fluke - not sure. Great work - thank you. BTW have you used the new Nikon EL20A battery with this ? I heard it gives better results. It is still the only camera that feels truly special when I use it. I have no answers for you, all I can say is that its log profile feels more real/raw compared to my 6K Pro and Panasonic S5. I think there is something in the moton cadence and that could be down to the fact that, in raw you get individual photo files for each frame. It was an updated version which handled moire a little better as well as a few other "improvements", but somehow it didn't look quite the same. I own 3 BMPCCs, 2 BMCCs and 1 BMPC 4k and the sensor on the BMPCC's is truly magical. An organic something... that is unlike anything else. I think it does! With a few processor upgrades. I've not used it though.

      Yes, its a Fairchild cinema sensor with large pixels and dual gain (CineDNG) in which is what gives it a rich tone like film. Its 2MP but they are large pixels that can better catch photons the way the human eye sees. They wanted to use a 4K version for the BMPCC 4K but it wasn't available so that's why the 4K has a MFT sensor and doesn't have that film look. The Fairchild sensor has 14.5 stops of DM if you do the math but i do not know why they state 13. I think it would have driven the cost of the 4K much higher if they went with a Fairchild again.

    Hey there Ioannis! Im thinking of investing some money to buy a BMPCC OG and one of the things im facing is that most of the used cameras im trying to buy have the micro hdmi output damaged, is there any tip you can give about it? I saw your cage and it seemed like it has good ergonomics in terms of cable management to avoid damaging the output channels!
    thanks for sharing this!

      Hello! Great to hear from you and thank you for your question. The ports on the og are scary to use. I feel nervous plugging in the mic, headphones etc. I think I was lucky, I found a Tilta cage on ebay selling for £100. They seem few and far between now. I think your best bet is to find one that comes with a cage. There is a very good facebook group, titled 'BMPCC Original' which sometimes has camera packages up for sale.

    I don’t think you’ve got nearly enough add-ons for my liking…

      Hello! It is a bit crazy, and a lot to lug around. I recently used the pocket to film a short drama in a really light weight mobile rig similar to the above setup but more streamlined. The Tascam was in a bag over my shoulder. It still fed directly into the OG but also recording separately.
