    Timely! I randomly decided to charge up my 10-year-old Icelight today. Thanks and get out of my head

    Your talking point about the whole "instant gratification" thing hit home. Not in the way you'd expect though. It's always been a joy for me to "build" the image.
    The only thing I don't enjoy is not having that instant gratification. Sometimes I go home after a shoot, and I'm like "well... I hope this turns out okay." 😂
    You really don't have any idea what that final image will look like, until you're into the build of it. It's almost nerve racking, but usually you come out the other side with something pleasant.

      100% - I actually filmed a line where I said that 'for some people, compositing is what gives them the thrill', but I cut it to keep it concise! I am definitely not knocking it if that's something that you or anyone else loves about photography. Thanks for sharing your insights!

    Really appreciate you stating this. Lighting for the lowest common denominator is fine for some things, but it results in a super fake looking shot. I like that you use a more strategic "produced" approach.

    Another informative video kevin, thank you.
    I must say though, I want to learn and understand layers and Photoshop better bc right now I'm in Lightroom and Photoshop intimidates me. Haha

      thank you! I had to record the Photoshop editing screencast... at least 3 times to try to keep it simple and clear, and even still, I know I kind of skipped over some stuff. I've known photoshop for so long - since before Lightroom or any other current photo editing software existed - and it's hard to put it into words or explain why I do something.
      What's nice about Photoshop is that it's very forgiving, and there are seemingly 10 ways to do anything. Try to find some beginner lessons you can do (I don't know what's out there) - you really need to mess with it rather than learn just by watching tutorials.

      thanks so much! I've realized that I can cover a familiar topic, but I might have something different to bring to it, or something that other tutorials leave out or leave unsaid. Plus it's very clarifying for me to articulate it and put it into video.
      Hopefully a new critique next week or the week after 👍

    4:30 should I care to not cover the car with my monopod or especially me myself?

    • @user-wt4qh9sj4w
      @user-wt4qh9sj4w หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      no, if you wear black clothes the camera sensor will not notice you

    • @capturingthemachine
      @capturingthemachine  หลายเดือนก่อน

      usually it's not an issue if you wear dark clothes, move briskly, and your body isn't blocking the light (not an issue if you hold it up high).
      Sometimes you will get a blurred leg/shoe in the frame, so just look at your shots carefully before you pack up your tripod. If blurred traces show up on the ground or around the car, it's not a big deal since you will replace the background anyway.

    Checkout Eric Curry's youtube channel for good light painting tips and ideas. I was inspired to shoot a diesel locomotive with his technique and its time consuming, but the level of detail available in the images is not comparable to anything else. It's also a technique thats well suited to outdoor shoots and stages scenes. My loco was 400 images layered in photoshop :D
