      Wolverine and their retailers have some awesome sales. I have two pairs of 1,000 miles, one from a local outdoors store and one from the website. Never paid much more then $300. Also got a pair of the BLVD series cap toe boots for $100 during a similar sale.
      They're the only heritage boots that I own, so I don't know what I'm missing from Nick's/White's/etc., but these have held up, are comfortable, and are still in good shape after 6 years of regular wear.

    Great vid as always. While watching started to think of what 1000 miles really is. For people working on their feet can easily walk 2 -3 miles a day. That is 500-750 miles per year. Can expect these to last several years so easily over 1k. Maybe obvious to most but thought was interesting. I have been wearing thorogood 6” max toes for at least 3 years so well over 1k miles for lesser brand.

    • @anzepirnat2830

      I walk at least 4 miles a day during the week and I'm a student. So they would last less then 250 college/work days. During the summer I wouldn't wear them, so that would leave me with 3/4 of the year with them. Which equals to 189 days in my country, therefore they would last me 1.32 years at most. I don't think thats much, especially not for the money.

      When I reached out for last year's Moc-tober, my White's were around 500 miles in a 9 month period. Soles were worn flat, but no serious damage to leather. Another year later, and over 1000 miles in since getting them, and on the third set of soles, they still feel and look good

    Great review! This is the only way to truly see how a boot is constructed. I sent my brand new 1000 Mile cap toe boots to a cobbler. He installed a new split welt, thick leather midsole, heavy duty steel shank, full length Vibram corded outsole, and a leather heel block topped with a Dr. Sole rubber heel. My plan was to purchase a pair of Nicks Americana’s, but the wait time was going to be 6-8 months. This is my first pair of boots, so I definitely compromised and purchased a boot with a good leather upper, and upgraded from the midsole down. I will be purchasing a pair of Nicks next year. Thank you so much for your honest and informative reviews!

    I love these thousand mile boots, if you go with the leather sole it really changes the feel of the boot for the better. They'll definitely wear out faster especially on concrete but man are they comfortable. Shoe trees are an absolute must with this super soft leather. I wonder if the switch to a fiberboard insole is a new thing, I've never had an issue with mine. Mine have been resoled 2 times now. Over three pairs I've never had the sockliner move or become unbonded. I think I paid around 280 for the newest pair in 2017. I'm not sure if that $400 is a new price or just MSRP.

    Panama soled Altama/McRae desert boots are the only boot I have experience with that will make it past 1000 miles with zero maintenance. I keep returning to them because they’re light weight, comfortable and stay cool in the US southwest desert. If you don’t need a steel toe or cold weather insulation, give them a shot.

      They issued those to us in basic training. Hated them so much that I replaced them as soon as I could. Tore my feet up, very hard under foot, not enough ankle support for airborne operations or long ruck marches. But, if you're not doing any of those things and you're in a warm climate, at least they breathe. You do you boo.

    Great video. Many struggle deciding on the 1000 miles or red wings. I think the 1000 miles is a little dressier of a boot. Getting half soles will help longevity and increase grip. Soles are thin too. Stinks that they cut corners

  • @wheel1775
    @wheel1775 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    It would be really interesting to list the costs of the materials you’d like to change. How much extra would a full leather heel cost? How much extra for a full sock liner? For $400 there has to be a little extra margin in there somewhere.
    Also, I wonder if these comparisons are off a bit. Wolverine is selling boots that presumably will end up in a retail store. They’re pricing their boots with the normal retail markups. Whereas other brands are basically selling direct. They’re not building boots with a wholesale and retail margin. So, maybe if Wolverine was selling direct without a retail markup, these boots would be selling for $200-$250.

    • @wheel1775
      @wheel1775 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kb9oak749 I get that. But unfortunately that’s how brands die. I want American companies to succeed, but constantly cutting costs is not a recipe for success. I have a pair of 1000 milers from 2013 that were made from Horween Cordovan in this rubyish colorway. I think the original price was around $365 at the time but those mf boots are bulletproof. Back then, the boots took 3 months of everyday wear to break in and they've held up beautifully whether in the snow/ice or in the desert.
    2 years ago I dyed them black using black shoe dye and now every time I scuff them the original ruby color shines through, which I'm stoked about.

    I bought mine for $150 shipped (as of today 11/22/24 Black Friday sale). It is the model with a midsole and half soles. It's excellent for the price. I've owned multiple models now, and they're always on sale. Also a great silhouette. Cheaper than any MiUS boot to include Horween leather that I am aware of. NEVER pay retail. Wait until the holidays to purchase and look for sale pricing. These are better than my Thursdays and we're $50 less on sale.
    Oh yeah: in rotation, these will last multiple years as a casual boot. When it's time for a resole, ask the cobbler to add a leather foot bed. My cobbler charges $60 for this service.
    Good luck everyone and happy hunting.

    I ran 1000 miles in 2 pairs of cheap running shoes. And I discarded both not because they were damaged or worn but because the foam lost its properties.
    I think you can use well made shoes for way, way longer than 1000 miles. It will largely depend on how well you treat them (ie conditions in which you use them, do you let them to dry up between uses, etc.), how good you are at cleaning and conditioning and how long you are willing to keep restoring them.

      Exactly! My brother is a use, abuse, throw boots in the garbage guy. He has seen my 3 or 4 resoled boots and is in awe. I use RW 8" moc toe boots. My arches are fallen and the wedge soles are all I can tolerate. Also, lace up boots keep my ankles from spraining. I have a pair of Iron Rangers I got many years ago and they are for casual wear, non-work times. Still on the original sole! Still look great. I do clean and condition my leather footwear often. Habits I picked up from my Dad as a kid. Reference running shoes, spot on. Get two good pairs. Same for work boots. Swap pairs each day and let them dry out inside. I have no more arches due to 28yrs of Army service and a LOT of running, often in piss poor boots we had to wear. These days, I mountain bike and walk for cardio.

Definitely worth that price but I can only wear them in warmer weather (I have the leather sole version) because they make my feet cold probably due to how little material is between my foot and the ground. Even the leather outsole itself is on the thin side. I will probably upgrade them to JR soles when it's time and throw a leather midsole in there.

Agreed that Redwings, White's, Nicks are way better made and superior materials, but they're workwear tier, I mean they're well made but not so well to dress up. For the style of Wolverine boots, you can do light work and dress up as well. I wear Red Wing Iron Rangers almost every day.
      I still like to have a pair of Jordan Luka 1's (my favorite player) to wear to the gym, but Red Wing offers boots that are really versatile.
      Can wear them in a slightly formal manor, or with a T-shirt.
      They're also made significantly better & cost $50 less than these $399 Wolverines.

    Great review on these nice boots. I have three pairs of 1000 Mile boots and the sock liner has never peeled up on me. Maybe not the perfect construction, but has not become a problem on my boots. In terms longevity, one pair I have owned for 5-6 year and have been though a lot travel. A quality cobbler replaced my leather soles about a year ago, but aside from that they still have lots of life left. I've had problems getting other boots resoled, so 1000 Mile boots are worth the price for me.

    I've had a few pairs of 1000 mile boots - quality control isn't the best - sloppy stitching in the uppers is pretty common. However, gotta agree with you, it's a classic boot and they always get compliments. Also a fantastic last for my foot shape, and good arch support. I agree they're overpriced, but if this is what you want, get some!

I would have thought Wolverine would have made some effort to sell boots that were close to the same color.

    Good review.
    I bought a pair of the leather sole version about a decade ago for casual wear. For me personally, they are extremely comfortable (every last will be different for different people at times) and have worn very well. These and my Clark desert boots are my go-to choice for wearing with jeans, khakis, etc. Though these feel better if I'm in them a long time.

    Bought my pair over 10 years ago. Used to wear them while walking to and from work. Walked at least 5 miles each day. Estimate I've logged 5,000 miles. I've needed to re-sole them at least 5 times. I use Superfeet inserts. The boots look great and the leather is still in great shape. Only downside, they are not at all watertight.

    Great video. I just purchased a pair of Wolverine 1000 mile boots from Sierra Trading Post. I paid $79 for them and with taxes and shipping, to my door was about $100. I have Nick's boots, several pair of handmade cowboy boots by high end makers that have waiting lists 12 months or longer. I like my 1000 Mile boots. They don't have great arch support but are still comfortable to wear all day. I'm glad to have them in my collection. I appreciate the Red Wing Iron Ranger but I don't like boots with a toe cap. They remind me too much of the "jump boots" I wore in the Army....been there, done that.

    I have 10 pair of heritage style American made boots, 4 of which are 1000 mile boot. 1 was on sale for 250, and two I got 20% off, and one was gently used for 75. All great boots, and I really like the 1000 mile wedge sole, but I wouldn't pay 400 for any of them. Even the limited run Rip Van Winkle I picked up. But what I paid relative to the other boots I have I think they're a well made boot. The foot bed issue for me is something I haven't thought about because I use a custom molded insert in all my shoes.
    Also been using leather honey for a while now. Good stuff.

    Got me a black pair about 10 years ago, when they were hyped up. Paid $250. I use them as dress boots, so they still look and feel wonderful. I believe my boots have a steel shank and no fiber board. All leather sole, and they look so much better then Iron Rangers. But you get the same wonderful leather today as you did back then. It does look like the cork filler is thinner in today’s boots. So sad that a Legend is dying.
