I've enjoyed watching this series a lot, really wish I had the money to give you guys a project based on my smart Roadster! Light EV's really should be a thing.
Dear Zero EV, your work is an awesome inspiration to me! Hopefully, one day I'll manage to convert my Jaguar x-type, and I'll be regarding your videos as one of the most important sources of knowledge needed to complete such a feat... Great conversion. Glad to see that you kept as much of the original car as possible and didn't burden it with unnecessary range. The only downside is that you chose to get Jonny Smith to review the car.
@@Hazell_Nutz He has very little "mechanical knowledge". The Kardashians have many followers too. The numbers don't always equate to quality. But it does get you exposure.
I must confess, this is a nice car you got. But as a reminder, electric drive motor comes with braking system incorporated inside the motor, which works with 12V or 24V. This can be programmed with the controller using the gear selector(of course it's no long gear selector but drive selector). This will work like an ICU gear selector that will not allow the car to move on P but will be on free ride when on N. This motor braking system is normally active when power is not supply to it, so it will not consume the battery power when on P. I so much like your work, if only I can come to your garage to be trained. This is the future of mobility
Brilliant work- the expertise and labor (and creativity) is probably worth $100,000. Discouraging for less skilled DIYers though. Conversion needs to be plug in. Like Transition One in France.
Beautiful work. I would absolutely consider having this done to my much loved 2001 MX-5 with 36K miles. Unfortunately I am in California. Having been a Miata owner for 30 years (1990, 1997, 2001), I absolutely believe this carries the soul of the Miata forward. I know many would disagree with me, but it was never about the engine (although it was a great engine).
@@stephenholland5930 I contacted EV West regarding 2002 conversion. They said their systems don't work with the OBDII out of the box and require significant modification if the cabling. I'd be keen to hear whether there are any plug-and-play solutions out there given the MX5/Miata is such a popular car.
Great work. Just a couple of recommendations if your looking for more exposure. For the USA, Engineering Explained (he did have an MX-5, yellow too), and Fully Charged, I'm sure you know of.
This channel is really incredible. Question: if one wanted to build a light weight (~850KG) 1/4 mile drag car using the large Tesla drive unit, what is the minimum battery pack that would give maximum performance? Would the Golf hybrid pack work? Chevy Volt?
FMPOV, this is a fabulous build! Still, I have a couple of questions: Is there an air conditioning system in there? Is there ABS, ASR, and ESP systems in there? What about airbags, seat belt tensioners? Is there a standard OBD-II diagnostic link connector to connect to the CAN bus? What about the convertible hood to open and close (this car looks like it got a hard top)? What about options for cold climates like battery heater, window defroster and remote pre-heating/pre-cooling of the car? What about a CCS option for DC charging with 50 kW? What about a three-phase AC charger option for three-phase markets like Germany and France? What about infotainment options and smartphone integration? What about other battery options?
@@Hazell_Nutz pfft, no apologies necessary, do the work that pays the bills, esp. in 2020. glad to see the project thriving, loved the Carpervert video as well

Purely my own opinion here and in no way disparaging your project or channel. I am from a different and older generation , raised on the internal combustion engine and not going to change. The Miata, when introduced, was for many, the modern, reliable version of the Lotus Elan. The Elan was arguably, the benchmark for sports cars. Can't imagine owning or driving a Lotus or Miata with nothing but a proper engine out front. Having said that, I realize times are a changin' and I support forward thinkers and technology. Well done but there will never, ever be an electric car in my garage. All the best.
I would love to have this kit available for the USA. That said, being a viewer from Arizona, does anyone else find a bit of humor in a "Arizona Special Edition Miata" that is right hand drive?
As ever tidy work - when u test it can u do some J turns in it please? The original MX5 box is so cool - the rotary controller is "ctional" (functional without the fun). Of course you'd have to limit power output to max. the clutch can handle. Limitation on space for the drivetrain maybe? Possible to relocate some of the electrical components to work around the transmission & driveshaft? Thanks.... from Canada.
Great job!! I am curious based on what you guys know, how much range could be done while preserving the fun factor of a small car? I own a 2020 mx5 and dream about owning an electric version but 100 mile range won't cut it for me. I would desire 150-200 mile range. My other car is a nissan leaf plus with 220 mile range coming in at a hefty 4k lbs in weight. Thanks to you talented folks proving it can be done, I really feel that mazda has no excuse not to come up with their own version for the next gen in a couple of years.
In the earlier episode it looked like your charger and DC-DC setup went in without any ingress protection? Also, what kind of Wh/km values are you getting? I've got an early model RWD KE30 that I'm looking to convert and estimating the efficiency is like stabbing in the dark.

You can definitely use the original translation and there are adapter for this. On this build we chose to test our new reduction gearbox.
Nice car I watched form beginning of the project!
How much it will costs to convert a car like this one? 🙂
In parts about 16k
Thanks to you talented folks proving it can be done, I really feel that mazda has no excuse not to come up with their own version for the next gen in a couple of years.
have you made a conversion kit? i will like to know cost of your kit and how i can use on my Toyota corolla 2009 model.
Where is episode 8? Its been 2 years!
Found it! th-cam.com/video/K6ZNDr9OPgU/w-d-xo.html
Unfortunately we go way to busy and sold the car
In the earlier episode it looked like your charger and DC-DC setup went in without any ingress protection? Also, what kind of Wh/km values are you getting? I've got an early model RWD KE30 that I'm looking to convert and estimating the efficiency is like stabbing in the dark.
Yes that’s correct, the charger and dcdc are both Ip rated. Not sure on wh/km yet need to do tests
Ok, lets see it drift!
Open diff it’s not great, Jonny smith tried on his review of the car.
Sweet. I want one.
