The song is “Footloose” which appeared on the soundtrack for the movie of the same name and was released in 1984. It was written and recorded by Kenny Loggins and featured the great Nathan East on bass.
Have you ever wondered what sort of song might completely and utterly kick my ass? Well, wonder no more because “this” one did. I’d say I probably did more than 40 takes on 3 different basses in my attempt to get a satisfactory take and mix. Granted, some of those takes were only 10 seconds in length. Some were much longer. The most painful mistakes are the ones that occur near the end of the song. What did I find so challenging about this song? For one, there aren’t many parts in the chorus’ that repeat exactly. There are subtle (and not so subtle) variations throughout and these took quite a while to figure out and commit to memory. Another aspect that I found challenging were all the 8th notes which definitely are not one of my strong points. As I’ve said before, I can play quickly in relatively short bursts, but I’ve never been one for endurance tests. The combination of these factors created lots of room for error when I was recording the video. And history has shown that, if I don’t get a song within the first 2 or 3 takes, it’s going to be a long day. I don’t think this version is bad, but it isn’t perfect either. The most grievous error is an error of omission where I leave out a note. This occurs at 2:55. I was so “done” with this song by that point that it barely registered a disapproving head nod. Also, the descending octave thing at 3:20 could have been much smoother than it was but, in the grand scheme of things, I’m fairly satisfied with the video. Ah, thanks once again to my friend, Jim Trice for bringing the song up (or down…I forget) to concert pitch for me.
The bass tone on the recording has a very unique and distinct tone to it…it has a very “nasal” EQ filter applied to it which really makes it stand out. For that reason, I knew I would be using a Spector to record it. I’ve included links to the unlisted videos of me using the other 2 Spectors below, if you’re into that sort of thing. I was satisfied with the version I did with the Legend, but then I got this bass and thought I’d give it another go. A week or so had passed since I’d recorded and, since I already had a video I was satisfied with, I figured some of the pressure would be off. That wasn’t exactly the case. Anyway, I went with this take because the bass was new. It’s a Kramer-era Spector NS-2A that came to me fitted with active EMG pickups which is something I thought could not be done. For some reason I thought these preamps only worked with passive p/u’s unless the pots were changed. I don’t know…in any case, it sounds a bit brighter than the Black NS-2A.
We had a very sad day yesterday. We had to take one of our cats, Briscoe (full name - Briscoe Kitty Jr.), to the vet to be euthanized. We were actually going to bring him in on Tuesday but he rallied and started eating again. That did not last. Still, we were grateful for the few extra days we were able to spend with him. We’ve had to do it before and will certainly have to do it again, but that last ride to the vet is never an easy one.

This peerless man has now, by overwhelming consensus of everyone who matters except himself, been promoted to "Emperor of Electric Bass Internet". Congratulations Troy!
Not only am I going to pin this comment, but I am going to print it out and hang it on the refrigerator. Thank you...and, uh, that's "Emperor" to you.
I can see T-shirts now, "All Hail Emperor Troy!"
@@TJH3113 Play long and prosper! 🖖🖖🖖
Don't forget Jedi Master!
I consider Troy to be kind of .....
Bass Jesus.
Just heard this yesterday and in 35+ years, I'd never noticed how busy the bassline was on the chorus. Looked it up and it was Nathan East. Good stuff!
It’s crazy, isn’t it? Thanks!
You can't unhear it now.
I still say you are one of the best bass players of our time... 🤘🎶
Oh please...thank you though.
Love your expression at 2:35. Incredible playing to a very difficult song.
That was my, "I've made it to this very same spot 20-something times before and if I fuck it up again, I'm out" look.
@@TJH3113 lmao 🤣🤣🤣 ... that's funny
@@TJH3113 Thats funny! lol
@@TJH3113 I have that EXACT look right now! Your vids have helped me so much and this tune is a monster! This video is the only saving grace I have! thank you good sir!
You've done it again. I talk about footloose a lot with other bass nerds. About songs with surprisingly hard bass lines. It makes sense now that I see it was Nathan East. Great job as always.
East's way of connecting the dots is just so damn clever. Troy nails those nuances in a way that's hard to hear on the record.
Thanks. Yeah, this was one I steered clear of for many years and it was as big a challenge as I'd always feared it would be. Thanks again.
@@TJH3113 I wish I could stay clear of it, but ...... cover bands :(
had no idea bass line was so busy; wow!
great playing, as always 👍🏻
Thanks!
2 years later, still absolutely brilliant 😊
Thank you! I just saw a segment on the news about the high school where Footloose was filmed. The whole school is trying to get Kevin Bacon to attend their prom.
Hahah how cools would that be? 😄 40 old movie. Time flies, cheers from Iceland and keep up the good work 😊@@TJH3113
Take comfort in the knowledge that you and your family gave Briscoe Kitty Jr. a good life filled with warmth, comfort, and love. My deepest sympathies for your loss.
I've heard this on the radio my whole life, but about a month ago when I heard it again, I thought, I wonder how Troy would handle this? Well now I know, SUPERBLY!!
One last thing, I think you need to add one of those Scream masks with the long jaw (maybe just off to the side, barely in frame); because I'm sure I'm not the only whose jaw drops everytime you give the gift of an incredible performance. THANKS
Yes, we do take some comfort in that. Thank you for reminding us and thank you for your condolences.
Thanks a lot for the great comment. I'm glad you liked the video.
Flawless!
Thanks!
THE GOAT on bass! Wow!
Nathan Beast!
This bass! This bass line! The attack on your playing... I'm a big fan., man.
Thank you very much!
awesome!
Thanks a lot!
Killer job!
Thank you!
We are our own worse critics...I read your entire description and when you talked about the descending and ascending octaves I found NOTHING wrong with them. In fact I found myself laughing because I was expecting slop based on your description. I found none sir. Fantastic performance!
I'll have to take your word for it, but I thought I played them with a little less confidence than I could have, considering the many other, more challenging, parts in the song. Thanks so much.
Hey Troy, thanks for covering this. I take some kind of bizarre joy knowing that ‘even you’ have struggled with the song that has been my nemesis for years. It’s not because I can’t play it, because I know I can and have, 100’s of times. It’s just that I made the schoolboy error of revealing that it was my nemesis to our drummer, who then took it upon himself to cue every performance in at least +5 bpm above the original. That doesn’t sound a lot, but with this song, it matters! As you said, it’s an endurance test even on a good day. I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of Briscoe. For all the the joy pets bring, ultimately there is always heartache at the end. Take solace that you gave your cat a wonderful life and afforded it the quiet and peaceful release it deserved in its time of pain. RIP Brisoe.
You're welcome. I'd like to say, "It was my pleasure.", but it really wasn't...haha. Yeah, if it was any faster I'd have most likely taken a pass on it. And don't give your drummer too much credit. I'm sure would rush it on his own.
Thank you for your condolences, you put it beautifully and in a way that I totally agree with. As sad as it is, I know we did the absolute right thing by Briscoe. I can only dream that someone would do that for me when (or if) my time of suffering begins.
Amazing! ;)
Thanks! 😄
Someone in the Talkbass forum mentioned that the bassline in this 80s classic. I never knew until _today_ that it was so awesome! You nailed it man, great performance!
Yeah, it's a ripper, that's for sure. Thanks a lot!
Dude, who are you?!? I think you’re Billy Sheehan without the wig??? And I adore the YES covers. What balls, Chris Squire without a pic?? Dang. Thnx for the Crash Test Dummies covers. Those modulations still kill me!! Give lessons?
Haha... thanks so much for the very kind words. Love the CTD's! Sorry, no lessons at this time.
That little nugget at :21 kinda sets the pace and tone all these years later, I never knew the great Nate recorded this.
It's why most of your vids get at least two looks, one to read through, one to watch and learn from. Tough song for sure!
Thanks for sharing Troy!
Thank for the great comment.
Fuc@in' amazing!!! I had to watch this 3 times... my jaw is still on the floor!!! AWESOME PERFORMANCE!!!!!
Wow, thank you!
I listen to your covers & now see music that I never gave much thought to in new light. Great Job!
Such a great comment. Thank you.
Dude… wow
Thanks!
The octaves walk down/walk-up at 3:19 sounds really cool! Technique awesome, Nice job again!
A little stiffer than I'd have liked. Thank you!
You've done the impossible! I used to HATE this song - every since it came out in 1984. After watching your video an seeing all the intricate bass line fills, I suddenly LOVE this song!
In that case, my work here is done. Glad you liked it.
@@TJH3113 Thank you so much! Job well done!
@Quadtrak- Ditto !
Amazing bass cover!
Thanks a lot, Bahistah!
Excellent! That had to take quite a few hours to figure all of that out and play it as cleanly as you did!
Thank you. Yes, it did.
I have to get a bass isolator for my car radio so I don't have to change the station when this song comes on! I never realized how cool this is!
Haha...
I love all your bass "tricks" here: the slides, double-stops, chromatic runs, etc. Not to mention that you held down that rock solid groove. Bravo!
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it.
Great job as always!
Thank you kindly.
What the actual……dude! Your fingers, well, were Finger Loose! You make playing the bass look so easy and fun!
Thanks so much!
I had to learn this song for a cover band a few years ago, and boy did it kick my arse. What an incredible bass line by Nathan East and super fun to play.
Tell me about it.
I’m right there at the moment. Have a gig Saturday and have just about every song down EXCEPT this one. Might need two or three more years lol.
Most accurate performance/cover of this on TH-cam. Brilliant!
Thanks a lot Bryan!
Just freakin' killer playing by both Nathan and you, good sir. Loggins' bands always had killer bass lines, but probably none more challenging than this one. Thanks!
Thanks.
I cant find the right words to describe this video so all im gonna say is YOU ARE AWESOME!
Haha...thanks!
I know it's been a long time but it's always saddens me to hear about a pet's passing. My fiancee and I are cat folks too, and we're fighting for our youngest one to stay alive. Our beloved Mrija (pronounced MREE-yah) got FIP, which is one of the worst illnesses a cat can get. Fortunately, there are treantments but they cost an arm and a leg - and we've already spent basically all our savings. But she's worth it. So are our other 4 purring friends. So far, she's been responding to the treatment really well :-)
Anyway - cool song, shockingly sophisticated bassline and, as always, a damn near perfect cover!
I had to look back to see who we lost... yeah, Briscoe was a big personality and we still miss him. Oh, boy! I hope your baby pulls through. I've heard of the condition and it's a cat shelter's worst nightmare. Thanks so much and take care.
Glad I could help on that one, I kinda don't remember. So, I get up this morning "hmm, Troy's got a new video. A Kenny Loggins song, well, ok. Shouldn't he be working on a Rush song or something?" Holy F@&%, I couldn't be more wrong. Outstanding job on what looks and sounds like really difficult song to play! The thing that really strikes me though, is how Nathan East wrote a textbook on bass playing in one "simple" pop song. I think that everything you need to know is in this tune. My condolences, R.I.P. Briscoe
Well, you help me with so many I can see how one might fall between the memory cracks. Thanks once again.
Yeah, this bass-line is something else, isn't it?
Thanks for your condolences.
Helluva cover! What a bass line!
Thanks! It truly is!
The bass on the chorus is amazing. Funky as!
It really is, isn't it?
As a lefty that plays right handed, this song kicks my butt every time. Great job!
I feel you, bro... Same here!
Haha. Thanks!
All the masks in the background make me expect to see a death metal bass cover but it's just Kenny Loggins hahahaha.
Good job man.
I never knew the bassline to this song was so erratic.
Haha...no. Most of the masks are from DeathStudios.
Thanks. Yes, "erratic" is a good word to describe it.
@@TJH3113
I'm still waiting for you to play a death metal song. At least thrash metal hahahahaha.
Thanks for the reply man!
That has to be a fun song to play bass on. It had to be a fun movie to make. It is even harder to believe the movie is 37+ years old. Classic in every since of the word. Thanks again.
"Fun" is one word for it... haha! I have to say, I've never seen the movie.
@@TJH3113 It put Kevin Bacon on the map though I heard from him that the producers originally didn't think he had enough "Sex Appeal", They used another term but I prefer to keep it clean around here. Thanks once again.
Nicely done Troy. Love that bass, You make it sing so well. Killer color too. Very sorry to hear about Briscoe. They aren't pets, They are family. 👍😎
Thank you. Lynn liked the fancy colors too. I'll let you in on a little secret (I actually learned it from Lynn's sister). If I'm interested in a bass, I'll show her two of them, one white or black and the other in a color. Then I'll ask her which one she likes better. She's a sucker for red. She'll pick the bright color and, voila, it's almost like she's buying the bass.
Yes, we do consider our pets to be family. I just don't broadcast it too loudly.
@@TJH3113 Nice. She has good taste. I'm a fan of anything blue, Although my drums were red. Sunburst is great as well. Be well and keep the covers coming my good dude.
I'm more of a "plain vanilla" guy.
@@TJH3113 I guess a cream would do as well 👍
Man, that bass line during the chorus really moves! I don't really care for the song, but the bass is right on the money.
It does, doesn't it?
Condolences on the passing of your pet. This upload is mind-blowing. I guess I never listened that closely to the bass before. Extreme. Well done!
Thank you for your condolences.
And thanks, I'm glad you liked the video.
Very nice playing! I'm trying to figure out if you're actually plucking with ring finger, or if it's just moving up and down the strings. Either way great technique.
Thank you. No, my ring finger just follows closely along with my middle finger, doing things I'm not even aware of (muting). Thanks so much!
Excellent cover of an insanely nuanced bass part! I've been playing this wrong for years 😂
Thanks a lot. Meh, if I were playing it live, I'd certainly do a few things differently in order to save myself some heartache.
Holy shit. I didn’t realize that song had such a great bass part!
Damn, man, you really do kick ass. Thank you for putting a smile on my face. 👍🏻
Yeah, this one was a beast! Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Has to be the hardest song on the "Function Band standards" list. Great job - No one (sane) would notice the things you mention in your own cover!
Thanks!
I could watch and listen to you all day.
Very nice of you to say. Thank you.
Awesome!!!
I love the part where they sing “Please, Louise pull me off of my knees.”
Thank you!
I've always wanted to play the bass like this. Now that I've seen what it takes to play like this, I no longer want to play like this. Congrats on the OCD determination required to nail this tune. The original recording is befuddling to my ears, because it sounds wholly improvised on the spot (which is a neat trick). Hat's off to you, I appreciate the effort, the discrimination and the taste.
There are a lot of different ways to play the bass and this song is an extreme example of just one of those ways. It did take quite some time to put all of the pieces together. I agree, that parts sound improvised and those are often even more difficult to learn and replicate, because they aren't thought out and have a spontaneity that can be hard to capture... usually in the syncopation and phrasing of a riff or fill. Thanks so much and take care.
Such amazing finger work. I could never. ❤
Thank you. I'm sure you could.
So sorry to hear about Briscoe. As a cat owner, too many to count (rescues) I've also been through this. I'm sure he had an excellent life, it's up to us to take care them (any pet) especially when they need us most, in the end.
Thanks for this bass line, Nathan East is a monster, never knew that was him on this tune, great stuff as always.
Let's raise a glass for Briscoe Kitty Jr...
Thank you. You're right, the end is really when they need us the most. I've had relatives who refused to have their pet euthanized because "they" could not bear the pain and loss. Meanwhile, the animal the so love suffered greatly and needlessly. Very sad.
amazing performance here and a shout out to nathan east and kenny loggins
Thanks a lot!
My bass playing has gotten so much better ever since i started watching you. Thanks Troy! Greetings from Puerto Rico.
That's great to hear! All the credit goes to "you"! Keep it up!
Yes yes yes you are the man, you've got Nathan East parts down 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Thanks a lot, Sheldon!
The intro is a study in what to do when you don’t have much to do. Excellent stuff. But as the verse started I thought ‘not much going on here’. As the boredom kicked in I had a second thought: ‘Troy wouldn’t play a song that was totally boring, beginning to end’. I was right. That chorus is insane. I think I have grown to hate this song until you revealed to me what was bubbling beneath the surface.
Really sorry to hear about your cat. That hurts my heart. My condolences to you and your family, I am sorry for your loss.
Thank you for the play by play and the condolences as well.
Sorry you lost a much loved cat. That is a painful experience. I barely knew my sister's dog and one of my visits to her house we ended up taking Charlie on to the hospital for his final rest. Very emotional. They become so much of your life.
Thank you for your condolences. At this point, we are used to it, but it never gets any easier. Thanks and take care.
I love this song!! Awesome!!!!
Thanks.
I covered Footloose with a few bands over the years but I have to say never did more than 70% of what you have done, so many nuances that I missed, wish I would've heard you before. Kudos for that Troy, you rock.
If I were playing it live, I think I'd take a few shortcuts with it. Thanks so much, Augusto!
@@TJH3113 Nah, I'd practice it to death and play it as is to impress. Plus it's much fun.
Hey I have been listening this song since 80's. And I commented on your "Bark At The Moon" video saying that it is an example of a typical metal song. This time I realise that Footlose bass partion way harder. You are excellent.
Yeah, this one is the real beast! Thanks.
Holy moly that tempo is QUICK ! Trying to play it with you is a lesson ! Got to slow it down for a bit… you’re a BEAST, Troy !!!
Sure is! It took a while to put together, so be patient.
@@TJH3113 Three weeks later… still trying to be patient! Working on the end where the chorus loops over and over and you’re kind of riffing out, seemingly effortlessly, I might add ! Oof, this is a good lesson! Thank you brother Troy !!!
Keep at it! I’m sure I had over 6 weeks into it.
Troy: to start, as with others my sincere condolences regarding your cat. We had to put down our cat Randy in 2014 when he developed lymphoma and it was not easy. We stayed in the room while they administered the injections and watched him pass peacefully. We have another cat sitting at 14 years old and although he is in good health at the moment my wife and I both know this can turn on a dime. As you said: tomorrow is not promised to us.
As for your stellar performance of "Footloose," well I think the people have spoken and you have received all thumbs up in the Coliseum after the battle. It's funny because parts in the video - especially the last minute of the video - exemplifies the facial expressions I have seen countless of times out on the course in 5K, 10K, and half marathon races. Moreover, the look of "I am so glad this shit is over" and a mixed wave of relief and exhaustion follows on the heels of that when crossing the finish line. Well Troy, you just ran the Boston Marathon of songs: you struggled, you fell a few times, you made mistakes, but you crossed the finish to get the medal. No easy task I assure you as demonstrated in this video! You are an inspiration to all us bassists who come to enjoy and learn from your playing. Thanks for putting this out and again I am sorry for your loss. Patrick
Thank you for your condolences and sorry for your loss as well. Briscoe was about 14 and we assumed we'd have a number of good years with him but this happened very quickly. 6 weeks from start to finish. Hi quality of life was very good up to the last day or two. Though we never got a definitive diagnosis, it appeared to be lymphoma as well which, according to our vet, can take a tumor based form in cats.
With regard to "Footloose", I thank you. I am always surprised at the videos that do exceptionally well, like this one. I have similar results with respect to my sense of fashion. Thanks again for the great comment.
I’ve told people for years that Footloose has an ass kicker of a bass line. Nobody believes me until they go back and listen.
Truth.
Awesome job. You just saved me hours of trying to figure out all of those licks.
Glad I could help!
Wow that was awesome. I'm tired just watching it!
Thanks.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've never heard that song kick that much ass. Well played. Thank you!
I’m glad you liked it! Thanks.
Absolutely fantastic. I'm 69 and I totally enjoy your bass playing and videos. You are the best. Would love it if you could provide a tab for "footloose" . Keep up your amazing work and many thanks Ken
Thank you very much.
I play by ear and memory and don't transcribe using sheet music or tabs, so I'm sorry that I can't offer you either of those. If I had them, you would be most welcome to them.
Thanks a lot, Ken.
That was pure perfection
Thanks!
The song that I literally hear from Wayne Nathaniel. I thought it was the Wayne Nathaniel theme song on the first place but it's actually titled Footloose not Wayne Nathaniel theme. Since that song was used on to his birthday
Wayne Nathaniel formerly known as Wayne Nathaniel The GoAnimator 2008
Interesting.
Fabulous bass line. Never was interested in the original cos of the cheesy movie but listening to you with the bass turned up makes me appreciate it more. I don't know how you do it playing the bass by ear.
It is, isn't it? I'm glad you liked it. Playing by ear is the only way I know how to do it.
There you go exposing some intricate and swift bass notes that for the most part remain hidden within the mix. Now we can all have a deeper appreciation for yet another song preloaded with bass magic and wonder. Thanks so much Troy. I'll never listen to that song quite the same again. So sorry to here about your cat Briscoe. he had a good run with wonderful owners like you guys. All is good but the grief and sense of absense remain I know.
Actually, the bass is fairly out front in the mix. I never gave the song a real listen because I thought it was a goofy, pop song. The more stuff I really listen to, the more I realize how much I missed.
Thanks for the condolences. Yes, we still walk into the room and expect to see him there, but that will fade in time as it always does.
Nailed it! Great workout for the right hand. I always took this one for granted but it's a good one
Thanks Barry!
Sir. You NEVER disappoint!
Stick around. Haha... thanks!
Some of the best parts of all your videos are the descriptions. Its a little story every time. Keeps it fresh. Great playing and discipline as well
I'm glad you liked them. Sometimes they are as difficult to write as the song is to learn. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave such a nice comment.
Absolutely fantastic cover
Thank you kindly!
That just brought a smile to my face! 🙂 Great cover........again!!
I'm glad! Thanks, Brian.
NS 2A w real EMGs! Had one love it. Thanks for showing me how to play this.
I think the Spector branded p/u's that came in these bass sounded as good, if not better, than the EMG's. This bass came with the EMG's. The black Spector I had came with stock p/u's which I swapped out for EMG's.
@@TJH3113 The Spector pups in mine were noisy and sounded nothing like how I expected. Putting in active ones made my bass come alive, especially for recording.
Hey Troy!
I’m commenting on this now two year-old offering of yours because it has created something of an obsession with me. I’ve been an ardent fan of yours and your fantastic interpretations for about a 1 1/2 years. After retiring, I picked up my old Peavey that I’ve had for 30:years and, with the inspiration of your clips (and gobs of free COVID time that torpedoed travel intentions), rediscovered the old chops. Ive since added a Rick, Guild, J-bass, Mustang, and Hofner to the stable. I’ve been banging away nearly daily since and even found myself playing in a Doors Tribute band. Your ‘Love Her Madly’ rendition helped me pass the audition! I’ve lately been forging my way through your back catalogue, hence this note. I’ve previously passed by your ‘Footloose’ offering simply because the movie was goofy laughable and the title song didn’t stimulate the bassist in me….until I heard your version.
I was riveted and exhilarated! Who knew this song had such a fascinating and addictive bass line! The runs that you rip off at 3:07 & 3:20 put the final hooks in me to try to get this song down. Good God! I’m thankful that TH-cam allows the speed to be controlled as, even at 3/4 Troy speed, this tune is a monster to play! I’ve finally bumped up to normal speed and have to cool my hands down in under the tap after a few plays. You should see the steam arise from my fingers. I’m actually breaking a sweat! The breakneck 172 BPM rivals the throbbing on-going pummeling that LA Woman demands. These two songs are unrelenting yet oh, so fun to play. And although I don’t forecast the Doors audience requesting ‘Footloose’ anytime soon, I’m secretly hoping somebody will. Thanks go out to you for instilling this pure pleasure in playing again. I’m gradually working my way through your playlist- Redbone’s ‘Come and Get Your Love’ was earlier today- equally satisfying. ‘Oh, What A Night’ was yesterday. Talk about quick, short bursts- that bit at the end of the ‘Spinnin’ my head around and taking my body under’ chorus made MY head spin!. I’m still trying to cleanly play the quick parts in Carry On My Wayward Son- your deep dive video was really helpful. You should consider more of those detailed love letters when the song merits.
And condolences on your feline buddy. I’ve had many cats and mourn their often fragile biologies.
Thanks again for your always amusing and educational efforts. Request: some old Alice Cooper…‘I’m Eighteen’, ‘Halo Of Flies’, ‘Be My Lover’….Dennis Dunaway!
Hello Bryan! Wow, that's quite a lot to respond to, but I'll try my best. First, thanks for watching the videos and I'm very glad to hear that some have been helpful to you. Also, congratulations on your budding collection. It's an addiction, like any other. "Love Her Madly" was a pretty tough one to learn and play if I remember correctly. I'm glad it helped get you in the band. With regard to Footloose, I've never seen the movie myself, but the song had long intrigued me and I have to day, it is on the short list of most difficult bass-lines that I've learned. Speaking of that song, I did something really out of character and sent Nathan East (who played the bass on the song) a link to my video asking him for a quick critique and to offer some recollections of writing and playing the line. I did this through the Cameo thingamajig. We're up to 7 cats now and we well understand that grief is the price you pay for love. Anyway, I've got a few more responses to get to before I go to bed, so take care and be well. I'll take your suggestions under consideration.
As always, very well done!!
Thanks again!
Been watching and enjoying your videos for a while. Nice work as always.
I don’t usually comment on TH-cam, but what you said in the description about mistakes at the end of a song being the most painful kind when you’re recording is absolutely true. As one who occasionally posts guitar covers, I know this all too well. That and the inner tension that ramps up toward the end of the song if you haven’t screwed up yet. Frustrating how you can play something quite well beforehand, but as soon as you hit “Record...”
Sorry about your cat. Losing a pet is never easy.
Thank you very much.
Yes, I tend to over-practice these songs to the point where I don't really have to think about what my hands are going to do...they just do it. That being said, it still all goes out the window when the red light goes on. If I'm in the right frame of mind and can get through a song on the first take, 9 times out of 10 that will be the one. Didn't happen with this one. And I very rarely revisit songs as I did with this one. This was a special case for me, but I'm sure there's some 10 year old kid out there who could play it without breaking a sweat.
Thank you very much for your condolences.
I've ALWAYS loved that bass part since it first came out. I'm an ok musician but I have no idea how any human being can play that bass part. I love the thing at the end where u walked up n down the neck. I actually screamed when I saw it. Fantastic fantastic! Btw I had to put my 16yo cat down 3 days ago. Ur right. That car ride is the single worst thing I've ever experienced in my life.
Yeah, it's a wild one. Thanks for the scream. I'm very sorry to hear about your cat, but try to think of it this way - now you have an opportunity to change another cat's life for the better.
@@TJH3113 I still have 2 cats n I give them all the love I can. My deceased cat lives on in them.
Oh my word, that's some tasty playing!
Thank you!
Excellent ... really enjoyed that Troy ... blast from the past or what? ... i just had a silly bloody inane grin on my face all through this :)
Footloose seems to be the "in thing" this week ... Mark at "Talking Bass" has just put out a lesson on the riff as well.
Sad to hear about your little buddy ... i'm not much for the last trip to the vets either.
Thanks. Yeah, it's something I've been thinking about for a few years but there was the tuning issue along with actually learning the thing. I just finally got around to it...eesh. A few people have said that, about the song showing up 2 or 3 times in their in-box this week alone. What a coincidence.
Yeah, it's always sad, but he wanted for nothing in his life and slept with his head on our pillow every night. I just have to keep telling myself that. Tomorrow is promised to no one. That goes for people as well as animals.
You're the man, Troy. A very tricky song to play. You got it right. Sorry about your kitty, been down that road a few times.
Thank you very much for both your comment and your condolences.
This is so cool I watch it every day!!
Thanks!
Cookin!!! Great job Troy!
Thanks Kerry!
Fantastic playing....put a new element to this song for me...
Thanks. That's great to hear.
just, "Wow". Well done, IMHO.
Thanks.
Troy, wow. I was not really into this song back in the 80's but once again I marvel at how I didnt pick up on this amazing bass song. Thanks for your honest critique about how you thought you did and also about the difficulty of getting a good take. I enjoyed this immensely. My wife said I should learn it......ummm...maybe not. Lol. Sorry to hear about Briscoe. My condolences.
Me neither. It's too bad that many of us were so closed minded when we were young. Thanks for reading and watching. And thanks for your condolences.
I love watching the video's with your Ric involved . Much love from FL.
Awesome. Love you too.
Hey Troy,
First of all, sorry for your cat, always a bummer when we have to take "the" ride to the vet.
About the song, WOW 🤯,
I've seen through the years a lot of guys playing this one (at least trying) and as a long time follower I know that you are a perfectionist and beside you saying about a mistake here and there the song is spot on, is a Nathan East line, he can make a really difficult bit sound and look easy and so did you in all the 3 takes!
Tonewise my favorite was the one with the black bass!
Keep on rocking bud!!!
Thank you for your condolences.
I'm glad you liked the video(s). Thanks for watching all of them. I think the Black version was the "safest" in terms of tone. I wanted the bass to stand out a touch more for this one.
Absolutely brilliant
Thanks Pétur?
Sorry for your loss. Thanks for not giving up on this song as you set another example by which to inspire us.
Thank you for your condolences as well as your kind words.
Man that was incredible! 💯💯💯
Glad you liked it!
Nathan East is the man! Nice job covering it!
He certainly is, isn't he? Thanks.
this looks suprisingly difficult!! great bass playing as always though ^^
It was murder! Thanks so much.
the last chorus is so tough, especially those octaves and the fill at 3:10. You killed it though!
Definitely. I had a really tough time with that part. Thanks!
Great job, Troy, as always. I have always loved this bass line and it’s on my list to try and tackle one day. I have to admit, I’m glad it gave you trouble because your playing always seems flawless and effortless. Very sorry for the loss of your cat as well. Pets are family.
Thank you. Yes, I definitely think something could be gained from learning a bit of this song.
To be honest, everything I play "gives me trouble", some just give me more.
Thank you and, yes, pets are family.
we are always our own worst critic on these types of endeavors . . . . you did an excellent job an your two noted mistakes are barely noticeable. Well done!
This is true. Thank you very much.
