Happy Birthday to John McVie born on this date in 1945.
I should have rolled a bit of treble off for this one, but I didn't. Anyway, no bass player serves the needs of the song better than John McVie does. He's a master of subtlety and melodicism.
"Go Your Own Way" was one of many big hits off of Fleetwood Mac's blockbuster album, Rumours.

Nice! I don't know if you're even aware of this, but watching you do these covers kind of evolves over time - for me at least. It begins as a tutorial for songs I'd like to be able to play, and you show me how to play them. But then it becomes a showcase for the bass player you're covering. It's like "Wow, look how well John McVie, Paul McCartney, Geddy Lee etc has written that bassline". And then, taking it even further, you're showing me/us that sometimes we think we know a song but we really don't. Quite often these videos of yours make me go back and listen again to something I thought I knew well. Don't stop doing these, Troy, whatever pleasure you get out of it passes right on to us, in many ways.

Mike Jennings Wow, thank you for the generous compliment/analysis. First off, I only learn/post songs that I find interesting from a bass player's perspective. And, right or wrong, I've always felt that it was the smallest details in a song that made it special and those details are what I go after when learning a song. It's a little easier to hear those details in Rush songs, as the bass gets preferential treatment in the mix when compared to the vast majority of other music out there. I achieve this goal better in some videos than others, like this video for instance. Ron pointed that there was an isolated bass version of this song on TH-cam which I just listened to and there are a few thing's I'd have done differently had I heard it before I learned the song. I've always tried, in my untechnical way, to have the level of my bass sit just above the bass in the recording, I also achieve this better in some videos than others. I do that for this reason - I've seen a number of videos where the bass level was way above the recording and, while it sounded great, the part being played was not at all correct. And that's fine, but it's not how I like to cover a song. I always stay true to the baseline and, if I do ad-lib or alter a part for any reason, I'll do it at the end of the song or state it in the info section beneath the video.
You know, before I started posting videos, I'd nearly put my bass down for good and hadn't played, except for the odd gig here and there, for nearly 2 years. I just didn't enjoy it anymore. Then I thought, well I don't want to be that old guy telling someone, "Yeah, I used to play the bass...wasn't too bad either." And have them patronizingly nod their head at me. So I thought I'd post a couple of Rush covers just so there'd be a record. A record that I was here and that I played the bass and that I liked Rush quite a bit. Once I started playing those old songs again, something was reignited and here I am, going on 5 years later, deriving as much satisfaction from learning new songs and playing old ones as I did when I was locked away in my room in my teens. I do it for myself first and foremost, but comments like yours definitely feed the fire, so to speak.
Anyway, thanks for the thoughtful comment.

Don't ever think about not playing your bass! If there is any point or purpose to life it's surely to make a positive contribution, right? Well what you're doing here is a great contribution. Thank you, and belated Happy Thanksgiving.

@@calmyourself405 I'm only reading this six years after you posted it, and I couldn't agree more. We're in the middle of a pandemic right now and this guy is so inspirational, keeping me sane and showing us loads of bass lines to make us better players. And getting better is so rewarding and good for the soul.

I read somewhere that Peter Green named the band Fleetwood Mac to entice Mick and John to join. They're one of the best rhythm sections in rock! Another story I read, back in the 90's, Mike Mills of REM said that when writing a bass line and drawing a blank, he would ask himself "what would John McVie do here?" John's lines are prefect, in that they add so much and blend in so well. Rumors was a lesson in bass playing, the walks and slides in "Gold Dust Woman", the iconic ending to "The Chain" and the drive and melody of "Go Your Own Way".

There you go again!! You tutored me right thru learning this classic bass line. Finally in a band with 2 ladies that we can do some Fleetwood Mac. Next on the list is "Say You Love Me" with another great bass line that makes the song MOVE. I like the way McVie relied heavily on the 6th note in his bass lines. Oh, and BTW, your playing an EBMM Stingray 5H. That's my go to bass in my arsenal, mine's a 5HH. Love the sound of EBMM basses. Great job! Thank you so much for posting. I read your comments to Mike Jennings post above, it gives me a lot of satisfaction to learn songs just like your comments. Now I'm the old guy (70) playing bass, but it keeps me young at heart. Thanks for that...I have had a similar story except I dropped out of playing bass in the late 70's. Recently I got a very good deal on a Squire P bass and in spite of my encroaching geezerhood I've started learning tabs, scales, blues and various ambient songs along with some of Radioheads pat your head rub your tummy bass and Johnnys lead stuff, fun and encouraging but also a bit on the melancholy because mentally I'm much better than I am physically at playing for about the 10th time in my life lol. But it's always said to do things to stimulate the synapses. I don't do crossword puzzles or work out complicated advanced math problems with my 3rd grade math abilities like my Wife does but I can learn songs, scales, chords and I think that's helping my brain stay active as I age. Anyway blathering on here, I just want to say THANK YOU for all your work, I come back over and over to see how YOU play a particular line and it helps me immensely. Take care
