      My only concern is what to do with it when not in use...add a lid for use as table?

    We find that the projector burns out quickly. Have you had that problem too. Ours is on 8 hours a day and often gets sand in it

    • @BealsScience
      @BealsScience  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We were running into an issue with the BenQ projector overheating as well. I think this is due to a couple of things: Sand particles and dust collect quickly in the projector (we try to blow ours out often but only after it has cooled down) AND the fan on this type of projector points out the same direction as the lamp. And, because the lamp is pointed down, the heat doesn't dissipate quickly enough. To help with this, we bought a small fan that blows air down onto the projector to help clear the heat that builds up near the lamp (I would show you a picture but ours is currently set up at another school). This really seems to help with the heat issue and with helping push the sand dust away from the intake. It is a pretty cheap and quick fix and it may work for you as well!
      This is the fan we purchased (amzn.to/2j0GG6g)

    @GregTuckerKellogg 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For a guy who gives the KeckCAVES people "full credit", you give them pretty minimal credit. It's effectively jammed into the last few seconds of your video.
    Let's be clear: the KeckCAVES researchers conceived of, built, tested, and supplied open plans to literally hundreds, possibly thousands, of people around the world, including you, who have built their own AR sandboxes. They worked with researchers, museums, teachers and hobbyists to make sure those plans could be implemented as widely and as openly as possible. My late sister founded and led KeckCAVES until her untimely death last year. They, not you, implemented the entire AR Sandbox system, and developed the fluid dynamic models that make the geodynamic simulations with water and volcanos possible.
    As an educator myself, I appreciate that you made an excellent video that conveys the excitement of an augmented reality sandbox. The thrill on your kids' faces is priceless. I remember experiencing that excitement when I saw the first AR sandbox. But as an educator I also know the ethical value of giving proper credit. I hope your kids learn that from someone.

      My reaction was pretty strident, but I still think you could have (and should have) been a lot more charitable in this video. Your other video (on how to build the box, and get the dimensions right fore the projector and Kinect) is excellent, and both more charitable while also making a really helpful contribution of your own.

    • @BealsScience
      @BealsScience  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Brentte Winchester that is an absolutely incredible idea! I don't have a clue how you could code it but the program is continually taking a snapshot of the topography and digitizing it so, theoretically you should be able to grab that data set and convert it to a format that a printer could use!
      Maybe we can find a mastermind to tackle this?!

      Well you are WAY beyond me! It sounds like you know way more about 3D printing and programs than I do!

      Brentte Winchester you want a 3D scanner or an AR Sandbox? I did a quick search and there is free software called ReconstructMe that allows the Xbox Kinect to be a 3D scanner. Then it can be imported into a 3D printer! Mind blown! reconstructme.net/

      I haven’t made any changes but I’ve noticed some differences in setups that used a different projector, processor or video card. The water is the biggest draw on the computer and graphics card so that could be causing the problem.

    UC Davis could have gotten a mention in the video as well as the description. Just watching the video it sounded like you taking all the credit when all you did was make a box and mount for the hardware. That being said, using magic sand makes it much easier to shape mountains than fine sand, also there is a port of the UC Davis code which is multiplatform so you can do this with Windows and other OS, plus that code has some other games, animated sheep's, rabbits, fish and sharks and much lower hardware requirements.

      @@steveogfunkgaming2650 Sorry, I must have missed it. I see now the plug in the very last few seconds, but still I feel like it's disingenuous. The concept, he said, was from UC Davis. It's a bit more than that, the software is the shining star, not just a wooden box of sand. He really did do an awesome job on this build. I like that he made sure to stain and water proof the wood. I like the rig he made for the Kinect (others I have seen are just zip tied or clamped). It looks super sturdy.

      Caught exception GLContext: GLX extension not supported on display :0 while initializing rendering window 0
      Caught exception Vrui::startDisplay: Could not create all rendering windows while initializing rendering windows

      We are using NVIDIA-375 drivers so I'm very confused as to why we are getting these errors.
