I live in an undisclosed location in Georgia, I don't want to say where because I don't want people moving here. I lived in Florida for 16 years, moved because of the weather, tourist nightmare, traffic & insurance. I am originally from the north. The area I live in has great health care, plenty of shopping and easy access to the interstate. We bought a beautiful new home for a fraction of what the same would cost in Florida and it is all brick. So, to each his own I am happy here and enjoy a life without spending half of it in traffic.😂😂

Every thing he says about Georgia is true! Recently the snakes and gators learned to fly and open doors. The average weight of a mosquito is 4 lbs. It is so hot that you will need to wear a jacket on those rare days when the temperature drops below 99 degrees. Two or more people starve to death every day in traffic. So please don’t come to Georgia. 😂 we are full

As a life-long resident of Georgia, I can agree with all of your points! We moved to Germany about 3 years ago and the break from the never ending humid Georgia heat is really, really nice. The traffic can be SO awful in and around Atlanta. More and more residents are moving farther out in the suburbs. Which is good and bad because the city planning in metro atlanta is really poor. Developers clear cut massive forests and put in cookie cutter homes, that have no trees. It makes the heat even worse because they don’t have shade! And the beauty is destroyed. I wish they would have more zoning restrictions in the state to help keep the beautiful parts, beautiful.

My wife and I moved to Georgia in October of last year. we LOVE it here! We are both retired (early 60's). We escaped the tyranny of New Jersey and couldn't be happier. We live in a small town that doesn't have a traffic light. We are reasonably close to all the shopping, restaurants and activities we could ever want. The amount of money we saved by leaving Jersey is incredible. Everyone we have met are super friendly and helpful, unlike the north. We were able to purchase a property with 2 houses on 2.5 acres for less than what we sold the jersey property for! As for the gun laws, Georgia follows the intentions of the US constitution, unlike the north and states like California.

I enjoy your videos! I grew up in Atlanta and was miserable. Then raised my kids in the burbs. The traffic and crime followed us. Traffic is only getting worse and crime has ruined some of the most beautiful historic areas. I suggest people read official crime reports.. It is very scary. But, Georgia is mostly rural, with beautiful small towns and lovely homes. We moved to a small town 3 years ago in central Georgia and it feels like a dream. Home prices are great here if you stay away from the Metro Atlanta and Historic Savannah. I think several points in this video are focused on the larger cities. The best part of small town living in Georgia? We aren't constantly bombarded with politics! This is farm country, where teenagers are up early working before school starts. They head off to college then move to a large city, but come back here to raise their kids. I never knew places like this still existed. Please don't think all of Ga is like Atlanta. 🙂

I was born and raised in Florida and moved to Georgia. No place is perfect but as a retiree Georgia is an excellent state for taxes and there are some great towns just outside major cities that offer low crime rates, decent schools, and a good quality of life including health care. Most of the people moving to Georgia, particularly the Atlanta area younger people while Florida is one big retirement community with Disney stuck in the middle. The state government in Florida is horrible, yes even worse than Georgia. I could go on a rant, but to no real purpose just needless to say the Florida I grew up in is sadly long gone. All the negatives of Georgia are multiplied in Florida. The weather, bugs, critters, and pollen are what they are. When you add in the cost of homeowners insurance and skyrocketing property taxes Florida is a very expensive state to live in. There is also a ticking time bomb in Florida most people are not aware of and that is Citizen's Insurance. This is the state backed insurance company of last resort when you can't get any other. Over 1.3 million homes are insured and the number is expected to be over 1.7 million by the end of this year. Citizen's is requesting double-digit rate increases this year and are expected to continue to hike rates for the next decade. Why? Because one Cat IV or V hurricane that cuts across the state could wipe out any reserves and require the Florida taxpayers to make up the difference at a substantial cost. Ready to see double-digit property, gasoline, and sales tax increases? Just move to Florida and you will have a front row seat.

Georgia's population is approaching 11 million. There are more construction cranes in midtown Atlanta than there are in some states. Tons of apartments and condos have been built around the Battery near Truist Park. I live in Woodstock, and builders cannot build subdivisions, townhomes, and condos fast enough. The same is true for the neighboring cities of Roswell, Marietta, Alpharetta, Canton, and Kennesaw. Gwinnett County adds a new high school almost every other year and they have over twenty. People are also moving to new housing near the Beltline. In addition, Centennial Yards has started construction on several buildings near Mercedes Benz Stadium. The rest of the state may not have the population growth that Atlanta has, but new industries are moving to all parts of the state, so people are following the jobs.

I grew up in Florida and Georgia and I agree with the criticisms of both states, because both have developed major problems due to rising populations. That said, I believe Florida's problems are more entrenched and diffused throughout the state, whereas Georgia's are centered around the largest cities, especially Atlanta. Both states have great areas to visit and live in, and you can find them if you look. For me, inland and the panhandle have the most potential in Florida, but Georgia has great spots throughout the entire state, which can be surprisingly variegated in both terrain and climate. That said, if I were to relocate back to the southeast region, I think I'd probably choose SC, NC or VA.

Have lived in Georgia for 23 years, now retired in place. I love it here. Avoid big cities and take the property tax and state income tax exclusions and it becomes reasonably cost effective. Lots of National Forest and Wildlife Management Areas (each WMA has different regulations, so that is maddening), don’t recreate on the Chattahoochee after it flows through Atlanta, but there are a lot of nice lakes. Swampy in the far south, so I avoid that. Normally nice people, some bad parts in large cities. I like it here.

I bought a nice, older house in Savannah for 135k in 2016, unfortunately the City says it's worth 300+ now and my property taxes doubled. I still love the slower vibe and beauty of the city, and a lot of cultural and SCAD inspired things to do. Try getting a ticket to the Savannah Bananas! I love taking the train from DC at 7pm and waking up in Savannah at 7am, I just wish the train station was downtown and not out in an industrial park, a big Amtrak/Urban planning mistake I say. People love to visit, I am fine with them leaving after 3 days, like Ben Franklin said about Fish and such. I originally grew up is the upstate of SC but have been an on-and-off resident of Georgia since 1989. My parents also used to own a house on Tybee Island and 3 of my siblings live in the Metro Atlanta area. Honestly I hated Georgia, it wasn't at all like SC. There were three primary things I hated most about GA; it was a police state, most people I met were untrustworthy, and the crime was horrendous. Here in SC, we still don't lock our houses and often don't even lock our cars. In SC you can travel at a decent speed on the Interstates and have some fun every now and then without being constantly harassed by the cops. You couldn't even light fireworks in GA when I lived there. One time, a Livonia cop DESTROYED his Crown Victoria police cruiser, jumping over curbs, hitting mailboxes, and jumping ditches -- all in very heavy traffic -- just to pull me over for pulling a trailer with no tag on it. I watched in bewilderment as this idiot destroyed his car in my rear-view mirror (he was trying to get around traffic), all the while wondering what all the commotion was about. You can imagine how shocked I was when he pulled in behind me! When I went to court, I tried to explain to the Judge that SC doesn't require tags on single axle trailers, and that because my truck was registered in SC, with an SC plate, and because GA and SC recognize each other's laws, that I didn't break any law. He didn't care and made me pay the full fine AND court costs. Of course I smiled knowing that for a $120.00 fine his Barney Fife deputy totaled a $50,000.00 police cruiser. The Metro Atlanta area has VERY strict pollution laws whereas SC doesn't have any at all. This may not be a big deal for many, but for me as a classic car enthusiast it's a very big deal. Now that I'm middle aged and have children, I find SC schools to be LIGHT YEARS ahead of GA schools. My siblings, who all have school-age children as I do, are always AMAZED at how far ahead my children are in school than theirs....... and yes my kids go public school. Many people might disagree with this, but I find the people I've met in SC to be better educated, more worldly, and certainly more family-oriented than our GA counterparts. Finally, all three of my siblings are trying to move away from GA to either SC or FL, which speaks for itself. As Governor DeSantis says, people vote with their feet. I know I kissed the ground when I moved back to SC for good.

I'm originally from Savannah, but I lived in Atlanta for 17 years as well as St. Simons Island. I now live in Mt. Pleasant, SC.(near Charleston) Atlanta is OK if you are young, but too hectic to retire there. Coastal Georgia is caught between Florida and South Carolina financially. Florida is the place for the wealthy (taxwise) because there is no state income tax, but high property tax (I lived for about 5 years in the W. Palm Beach area). For middle class retirees, SC beats the socks off Georgia and Florida. We have paid no state income tax for two decades (because the first 30K, or so, of retirement income is not taxed). and our property tax is $1250 for a house valued above $700k. Georgia is the worst of both worlds: high property tax, high state income tax. Hurricanes drive up the cost of homeowners insurance in all three states. My homeowners insurance is over $4K. I would buy in Mexico before South Florida for a second home (Lake Chapala or Puerto Vallarta).

The Wall Street Journal had a front page, article 2 or three months ago about how Northeast Georgia is the epicenter of growth of the United States. People from Florida are moving to areas where it’s cooler, higher elevation, lower expenses, especially as far as Insurance, and better weather, not as hot and humid constantly.

As a Georgian I want to clarify shit like crime, traffic mainly applies to Atlanta and metro. I live in Athens and traffic is okay here only somewhat bad during 7am and 5pm rush hours. But if you live somewhere like Eatonton, Madison, or Statesboro. Crime and traffic isn’t nearly as bad as anywhere near Atlanta. There’s hectic, exitingGeorgia (Atlanta). And there’s chill, laid back Georgia (outside of Atlanta metro)

In Atlanta and the surrounding areas, stopping every fifty meters at a red light is no fun either...it takes WAY too much time, hours it seems, just to drive a short distance, say to the closest grocery store, because of red lights. 👍

Born and raised in FL, left 3 years ago because we saw the writing on the wall well before things turned to crap there. I got way more house for the money, more property and make $50k more a year than I did in FL and work a lot less.
People have to do research because the more near the mountains you are the better quality of life. More south in metro areas are complete trash, easy don’t move there. Yes we pay slightly more taxes but it has way more pros than cons. FL is a cesspool of all kinds of people and it got way worse when people moved from northern and western states and made it like the places they were chomping to leave. More illegal people have flooding there as well that they do a great job of not talking about.
Now this year they will most likely get hit with a catastrophic hurricane and wipe out half the state and homes and no one will be able to get compensated for the loss and they will be left homeless because of the crap fest it has become.
You want traditional values for your family live in traditional areas of GA

Basically it sounds like Jerry is guilty of truth by omission...it sounded more like a Jerry 'Springer' styled presentation of the Peach Tree State. Georgia is a big state so the sheer variety of lifestyle choices are immense. Atlanta is not Appalachia just like NYC is not all of NY State....except for maybe the taxes. So there are many geographical locations to choose from. Retiree income taxes are very low in Georgia....better than in South Carolina. However, nothing replaces actual visits to areas and actually talking to the locals.

I am a senior. I've lived in London, California, Puerto Rico, the Florida Keys, New York, and other exotic places. My daughters encouraged me to move to Savannah. The city absolutely seduces! I liken it to a Southern belle who indeed does seduce you, and later on you realize you contracted "the clap." I state this because I sold several properties in Florida in order to purchase a home in Savannah. I thought it would be one to leave to my children and grandchildren. It was gorgeous. But I came up against violence in that area that I never before encountered or experienced. There was a dog attack, my car tires slashed, my dining room windows crashed, an SUV knocked me off my bicycle (which resulted in hospitalization for 12 days), theft of anything left outside, insane levels of boom box noises, ridiculously dangerous explosions of fireworks in the urban downtown (where I lived), etc. I had to sell the house and move back to Florida just when prices were even more inflated. Now I am thinking of living in Mexico or some other foreign nation.
The people are friendly, the town is beautiful, and I've never eaten better food... BUT violence (at least for me) was all too real there.

Despite having exterminators bathe structures inside and out weekly, as if bug poison is water. education is ranked 36th in the nation , combine that with stand your ground laws and no license open carry, what could go wrong. I live in central PA and I’m thrilled to death that no one wants to move here. Lower cost of living, less traffic, a more laid back kind of vibe where most ppl are conservative and just want to be left alone to live their lives. I lived in West Palm Beach FL from 1983 to 2007 and I saw the massive changes down there. Still a lot of Florida was cheap to live in in the 80s and 90s. Not anymore. When they finish filling FLA up, they’re going to start moving north to GA, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. I think it’s inevitable but the charming southern rural culture gets destroyed. I never thought of PB County as part of the south but as the 6th borough of NYC.

Overall, I think people were generally happier back during the days when most people stayed where they were from. While it can be good to live in a few different places in your lifetime to learn that people are different from place to place and what those differences are, I often hear people saying things like, “well, where I am from we did things differently and things work better than the way things are done here”. My response is then why did you leave there for here … and, if it is so bad, why don’t you move back? Unless you are moving just for a change in weather, you just taking a risk. The world is changing fast and moving to a place for things like population or political views gives you absolutely no guarantees that things will remain that way in 10-20 years. If your generally unhappy, moving to another part of the world will usually only give you a different place to continue to be unhappy!

I am in VA and I find that people from the city of NY are really guilty of this.

People never stayed where they were from. Your entire premise is flawed. What an absurd commentary. We're all living in this nation because we came from people who did not stay where they were. Our culture is all about chasing opportunity wherever it may be, relocating for a 'second chance', relocating for career advancement, going out of state for university, seeking greener pastures, and so on. As to people moving somewhere and bringing their ideas and such with them....there is nothing wrong with that either. If they are good ideas, maybe they'll gain traction. If they were bad ideas, hopefully they'll not amount to anything. However, unless stagnation is your goal, let ideas battle it out and may the good ones survive and the bad ones die.

Our family intends to move to a southern state with a warmer climate in the coming years. Our tolerance for the cold keeps getting worse the more we age. We had planned on Florida as I have family there, but with the skyrocketing costs I'm not sure we can afford to and my husband doesn't want to live in Georgia. You have covered South Carolina in some videos already, so I'd be interested in hearing your perspectives on Alabama. I hear that the Gulf Shores is now a hit retirement location, but I would be interested in a state-wide perspective.

If you want warm you have to go south in Georgia and Alabama. Even then you’ll have cold in the winter upon occasion. N Georgia and N Alabama will get the occasional snow and frigid temperatures. Heck! N Flarda even gets some. So, know what you want before diving. I’ve seen 15” of snow in N Georgia followed up the next week with 10”. Buyer beware.

Just make sure you come to Alabama in a canoe with a banjo on your knee. Oh, and you don't need to concern yourselves with dental insurance...

Born and raised about 55 miles NE of Atlanta. I remember when the one millionth Atlanta metro citizen got off a DC6 at the Atlanta airport in 1956(?). Things have changed. As Yogi Berra said of a popular New York restaurant, Atlanta's so crowded, nobody goes there anymore, but the rest of the state is great.
The oppressive humidity on a hot summer day is common for the entire eastern US, from Tampa to Detroit, but the winter cold won't kill you in Georgia unless you work at it.

Sounds like the checklist for Virginia! We have all of those too. Family roots are TN, VA, NC and my husbands family is from GA. The temperature in Virginia is just as bad as Georgia southeast of Atlanta. I watch both locations and I don't look at the temperatures but "What it Feels like" because I know humidity. Hasn't snowed here in Virginia the past couple years enough to even track it. They are saying we are in a 24 month snow drought and will get worse. All the building and ripping out our forest and wetlands are causing the state to heat up more each year.

I feel SAFER when I see a law-abiding citizen who is armed. Sheep need sheepdogs.
