  • Malta, the island nation 50 miles south of Sicily, may be small, but it's home to one of the biggest stars in opera, tenor Joseph Calleja. And like his country's name, which may originate in the Greek word for honey, Calleja's voice is a potent mix of Italianate passion and sweetness. Just listen to how he pulls the volume back to a slender golden ray of tone several times in Tosti's gorgeous "Ideale," and especially the word "disciogliea" in the Puccini aria that closes this performance. His singing requires the breath support of a true athlete, which is key to launching soft sounds - even more than his roaring top notes - all the way up to the cheap seats.
    The ability to control dynamic levels and expressively shade notes and phrases were once techniques in nearly every singer's toolbox. But we don't hear as much subtlety these days, and that makes Calleja an especially refreshing throwback to pre-World War II singers such as the suave Tito Schipa and the magical Alessandro Bonci. It's a reason Calleja is in such demand from all of the world's top opera houses.
    Along with his voice, the tenor's burly good looks and acting skill have helped land him on the silver screen as well. He plays opera legend Enrico Caruso opposite Joaquin Phoenix and Marion Cotillard in The Immigrant, a story set on the gritty streets of 1920s New York. The film is expected to be in limited release in the U.S. beginning May 2.
    The best news of all is that Calleja is just 36. His voice is already changing, growing richer, bigger and a little darker than what you hear on his earliest recordings. With any luck, we'll have a few more decades to enjoy what is already one of the most impressive tenor voices of the past half century. --TOM HUIZENGA

    I believe Joseph Calleja is the best tenor in the world! As a Russian native speaker I appreciate Joseph's performance of Tchaikovsky's song in really good Russian. There is only one little mistake.
    Instead "temnyeyet okno" ( the window is darkening) in the original it goes "Temnyeyet OKO" (the view in my eye is darkening). Oko is archaic Russian word for an eye. I wish Joseph Calleja every success!

      It’s interesting how a Slavic language has so many Latin-sounding words. Oko is similar to the Italian word for eye, “ochio” (pronounced almost the same, with a hard “c” sound).

    These guys are absolutely fantastic! Kev summons big dynamics & intensity from that li’l ole upright piano and JC’s voice resonates perfectly for small office (or big acoustic theater!) Ideally this music needs a much bigger space to reveal the full beauty of sounds being produced but under the microscope of tiny desk it’s pretty damned impressive. Congrats to JC for singing so well in a space which is acoustically so unkind.

    Exciting new prospect at the top of Opera. Personally I love him. His top register is a tiny bit thin for my liking, and I did NOT like the accompanist on this recording at all.
    But we have been truly spoilt for the last 20+ years with Pavarotti, Carreras and Domingo. Vittorio is my current favourite but Calleja is a close second :)

    • @ryanwolfe300
      @ryanwolfe300 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      he's one of the best, most pure voiced tenors alive right now. Not to mention one of the most celebrated! The dryness you're hearing is in the acoustics not the man!

    • @js59695
      @js59695 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      He's fucking garbage. And the vibrato us a bleat he sounds like a goat. Zero ZERO chest voice. The great singers would laugh if they heard this.

    • @jakobwall9748
      @jakobwall9748 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You're an emotional little being, aren't you? Your response is so overtly dramatic to the topic at hand. You are so up in arms that you cannot even admit to the things Calleja does well. It seems you and other Stanley/LoMonaco soapbox preachers enter this state of mind quite often. You seem more likely to spontaneously combust than to admit that a singer whom you do not fancy might be doing some things well. From that stems these ridiculous, theoretically (and practically) impossible statements like "zero, ZERO chest voice".

    • @js59695
      @js59695 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jakob Wall tell me what he does well? I've sung all over. I have two degrees. I've been coached by some of the best coaches in the world and studied with "top" teachers. I was like you once. That's the difference. I have had this shit teaching. I know how completely different the sounds are. Talk all the trash you want but that still doesn't make you knowledgeable on the subject. What? Do I need to go into the physiology and anatomy of the larynx? We say zero chest because that's the only words people like you think you understand. You don't even know what chest voice is or how it functions.

    • @js59695
      @js59695 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jakob Wall how do you explain the bleat? I'll wait. I guess that's just part of his natural sound. I'm certain I know what you sound like... if you even sing.

    Désolé mais ce chanteur n'a rien à faire sur une scène d'opéra. Tout est à jeter dans sa technique vocale.
    Il chante littéralement comme une chèvre (vibrato). Aucune puissance, pas de timbre, de l'air dans sa voix.
    Et dire que ce mec est une star de l'opéra...
