How To Make A Handpan- The 3 Hammer Challenge - 2019

  • The 3 Hammer Challenge was an idea that was created to get me back to the roots of this art form. Forget the tools and technology; can I make a handpan using just 3 hammers?
Last year I wanted to get back to the basics of making. This year I also want to get back to the basics of playing. I've pursued 9 notes, played mutants, added bottom notes and in doing so I wonder if I've wandered off the path. Do too many notes dilute the original intention of the instrument?
One evening I was feeling nostalgic for the good ol' days and I dug up some of my favorite videos. Most were people playing the heck out of 7 note instruments and having way more fun than I've been having lately. I felt both envious and inspired. I am going to use this year's 3HC to travel back in time to when things were simpler.
I made a 20", 7 note instrument. I compiled a list of some of my favorite 7 note scales in D and I let you, the viewer, vote on what scale I was going to make and this instrument will be ready to be given away on October 13th, the first International Handpan Day.

The one I have now is nothing like yours a friend of mine gave it to me because he did not know how to use it or play it and make the sound come out it was my first time playing it and I fell in love with the instrument but when I found out how much it cost I knew I could not replace the one I have I use this estimate to bring peace to my community I love your work and I love the way you make the note sound so clear thank you for your service

Very nice to see, sounds great too. Though i missed a bit at the tuning part. Your pan seemed in tune quite fast without any tuning software as far i could see. Can you say something more about your tuning method?

Yo man cool stuff! This has inspired me to try to make my own, but I am wondering if the dimple molds have to be the exact same as the template since you used the same as the last time you did it.
    Stay safe everyone during quarantine✌️

Do handpans resonate better when they are made with hammers vs pneumatic tools? I think I'm going to try the hammer challenge. This video was inspiring.

How do you angle the notes on a handpan? Are they angled like 45 degrees from each other to avoid “parallel” notes so harmonics don’t affect the neighbouring notes?

Hey Colin! Thanks for putting out another video! I loved the last three hammer challenge. Where did you buy or how did you make the bolted collar that holds your handpan?

I can't tilt the ding towards the inside of the dome. a raised wave is created in me. if I bring it down, it rises somewhere else, what should I do?

Just wondering where you get the templates from for the tonal fields…I am trying to work out a D Kurd 10 (9 + 1) and I cannot find the correct dimensions for the fields. I think that I am using 74 x 91 outer 23 x 28 inner, but cannot find any great information about whether that is correct or not. Do you have any idea if that size would be correct or if there are any books/templates that explain how to come up with dimensions?

hi! The dimensions for the notes are in the video at 2:52. They are the long and short axes of both note and dimple, in mm.
