These visas are intended for tourism, business meetings, or visiting family and friends. Engaging in any form of employment while on a visitor visa is a violation of U.S. immigration laws and can result in serious consequences, including deportation and future visa denials. If someone wishes to work in the U.S., they must obtain the appropriate work visa, such as an H-1B, L-1, or another employment-related visa category, which allows for legal employment.
I suggest do not spend much money only to sleep in motel. find whichever is cheaper and save money and spend on extra activity for the place which you are visiting.

The biggest expense that you forgot to add is the monies one must contribute to retirement account -401k/IRA/ROTH/SEP IRA -- that can't be ignored at any cost or else one gets to retirement and might as well kill oneself if there is no retirement nest egg.
