I think people forget 03 was never intended to follow the manga as plot points as early as the first half of the series deviate from the source material to write it's own story. It's not just "pick up the first half" then "pick up brotherhood". One scene in the episode where Scar meets Lust has him discussing why she has a similar face to a person from his past. 03 was it's own story from the get go and I'm quite proud of Arakawa for letting others take her own work and do something different with it. It shows a lot of a confidence as a creator to let someone do their own interpretation of such an original idea.
It honestly seems that Arakawa was very honoured to have FMA be interpreted by the 2003 staff. In an extra in Volume 8, she shows herself fangirling that she gets to meet Seiji Mizushima. Seemingly because she loves Dai-Guard, a show Mizushima directed.
What makes the ending even sadder is that Ed says he doesn’t want to kill anybody, but we find out the every time Ed uses alchemy he takes the lives of someone on the other side of the gate.
@@goastlyarrowplays Father cut off the connection to the source of the tectonic plates. Thats why Scar had to break Father's connection so that the alchemist could access the energy from the tectonic plates and use alchemy to its highest potential.

@Dann Rajeeh LMAO you really think that ATTACK ON TITAN of all shows is better then FMA or FMAB? Did you even watch the shows? AOT is nowhere NEAR either of those shows.
@Dann Rajeeh yes I have seen AOT season 4 and I agree Erens character is good but......saying that Edward is a clean cut guy? Did you watch FMA or FMAB? Especially in the original, it kinda undermines his whole character. A lot of his character arc in the original, (and in brotherhood, but more so in the original,) was dealing with mercy, and the fact that he has to kill. Edward is not a good guy. He isn’t a bad guy either, but he has had to kill, and OVERTHROW the government. Like, he’s not a clean cut good guy.
It always makes me happy to come across others who still praise and appreciate FMA 03 for all it brought to the table. (And not get attacked by the BH fanboys) Shoot-it usually makes me happier to see people say they prefer fma 03 over brotherhood more than the reverse-even though I love both equally and think they’re great! It’s just refreshing I guess. Too many anime fans nowadays(if they ever do mention FMA 03) squawk about how superior Brotherhood is and how crap the other is, usually with the typical generic and surface level reasons that are usually spouted with ignorance to the background of the FMA franchise, or don’t realize what the directors were trying to say, and I get tired of hearing it. It gets to the point where even if someone hasn’t even seen FMA 03-OR even any FMA-they’ll automatically believe FMA 03 is bad-because they hear it so much from the shounen fanboys. Maybe I’m just different...but I enjoy being able to dig into an anime beyond the surface level before I judge it. I want to fully understand it and find more things that I can appreciate about it that I might’ve never thought of before. It seems like a lot of anime fans nowadays just want their quick satisfaction, easy to digest, flashy, grand anime plot-lines. They don’t want to watch something that makes them think a little more. I’m not saying Brotherhood is trashy by any means, but out of the two...it’s definitely gonna be the one that’s more digestible and appealing to the casual, mainstream anime watchers, compared to its counterpart. Thinking about all the monthy anime that’s getting pushed out...it’s so rare to find an anime with such a somber, thought-provoking, character driven anime like FMA 03. I feel like a lot of that was left in the 90’s and early 2000’s anime, and it kind of makes me sad.
Can we just, _acknowledge_ the dubious implications when Scar was talking about the full extent of what the military did in Lior and then Rose came holding her _baby?_ Cause yeah, they did that.
I thought that was brilliant. Fma 2003 does such a fantastic job at portraying war and its tragedies, and I've seen people say "that was unnecessary", but in reality it's even worse
For those who hate it because "It diverged from the manga" or "the ending didn't go the way I wanted it too." I counter with "The ending is meant to show that even with everything, we can't always get what we desire, as Ed still loses his previous world and has to live in ours." I also point out how with Brotherhood keeping true to the manga, the pacing was far worse at the start since it rushed through so much, focused more on flash than character, made the villains dull (as the homunculi are nothing more than Final Fantasy side bosses now and Father is your typical shounen villain wanting to be god and take over the world), and it keeps things from the manga that ruin pacing (especially how all except 1-3 episodes had a silly moment shoe horned in during what should be a serious moment). If you think to FMA, the changes made make sense, removing humor allowed for far better pacing and emotion, the focus on characters allowed for us to grow with them, to where a good example was when King Bradly revealed he was a homunculus. In the original, if you didn't read the manga, this was a devastating reveal since he was that grandfather figure for the boys only to reveal he was truly behind all the terrible things, while in Brotherhood, he doesn't even hide the fact he's evil and shows a lack of subtlety that hurts the character.
I'm not really a fan of the "it diverged from the manga" argument a lot of the time because some people who argue that don't always talk about the strengths and weaknesses each version of a show has. They talk about which one is truer, realer, more canon, and act like something being a more faithful adaptation makes it better by principal alone. Of course, I'd understand if you read the manga and were disappointed or angry about any changes that were made, or want the author's vision portrayed accurately and don't want some studio mucking about with the characters and world they created, sure. But often times the canon vs non-canon, adaptation vs 1:1 debates on many series tend to annoy me quite a bit. For a lot of reasons. Far more than this small rant can contain.
Both FMA and FMAB are my favorite animes but for different reasons. For 2003, the tone, the pacing (especially the beginning), the soundtrack, the lightning, the humor, the camera movements and the themes are handled much better than Brotherhood. I’m so happy seeing more videos of people showing the love FMA 2003 deserves❤️
I like that in FMA, you can highlight the common theme. The idea of entropy, the increasing chaos, exposing at first glance immutable truths of nature and the attempt to resist this decline rhymes with story of growing up, breaking the perfect ideas about the world and shaping a new outlook on life. P.S. a nice work
My biggest issue with Brotherhood is that it’s new and shiny and “follows the manga.” FMA had to earn its bones on its own after they caught up. It had to run out of the gate while Brotherhood was supported and coddled all the way. And in the end, how is FMA remembered? Old. Not as good. Doesn’t stick to the original. Or worse, “we can like both.” FMA had to crawl, stumble and walk so Brotherhood could sit on a float.
I am really glad they did this show first because I feel like they learned a lot before they made Brotherhood. I still haven't watched this show haha because I was reading the manga back in middle school and was really confused why this story was so different. :P Seems worth going back and watching though!
I prefer the mature tone of 2003 more. I remember a schoolmate talking to me about brotherhood back in highschool, I mentioned that I prefer the original, he was like "You mean brotherhood right?" I was like "nah the original anime adaptation before that" he was like "nah man, pretty sure it's just brotherhood". Over the years I'd watch as the 2003 version would slowly be forgotten about with the occasional mention here or there only to have people to trash talk it because it wasn't faithful and because it was too sad for them.
@@snark567 I don't think most people prefer brotherhood because 03 is too sad or dark, I think the majority of people just simply prefer anime that stays faithful to the source material for better or for worse, probably because there is a large list of anime that have done their own story apart from their respective manga and it usually turns out bad (like soul eater and black butler) but that's definitely not the case with fma 03. unfortunately that is just the mindset most people have and when the majority of people hear that fma 03 isn't faithful to the manga they just dismiss it outright which is such a shame. I love fma 03 almost as much as brotherhood/the manga I definitely appreciate what it was going for and it's still in my top 10 anime for sure
I know this is an old comment but what's exactly wrong with liking both? I read the manga, watched brotherhood and I enjoyed fma 03 just as much I don't feel the need to pick one version over the other I love the entire franchise. Also brotherhood isn't new, shiny yes but definitely not new, it was a decade old when you commented and it only came out 4 years after fma 03. fma 03 only feels older in comparison because it was one of the first anime to utilize digital animation instead of traditional hand drawn animation and the technique wasn't quite mastered when 03 was being produced
Tbh I preferred FMA to Brotherhood, it was so much more dramatic and interesting. Brotherhood's humor also just rubs me wrong way, I can't take anything that's happening seriously, all of it's dumb humor just undermines all of it's tension.
I watched 03 before brotherhood and I came in with lower expectations than brotherhood, while my expectation was reached and stayed and I enjoyed brotherhood very much buuuuut............ I watched 03 twice
I thought the fight scenes were more realistix too. Short and sweet, not drawn out or fast paced "chess matches." Especially when he kills Greed. Far more interesting and tragic than the Greed in Brotherhood.
Its almost summed up in one scene. when Edward fights envy in the original, the face changes envy does is to remind ed of the mistakes and hardships, its pretty haunting. Then in brotherhood hes like "WAWAWA IM CRAZY ENVY AND IMA JUST CHANGE MY FACES AND BE CWAZY" Envy is my favorite homunculus from the original because hes the most relateable but I hated him in brotherhood.
@Betsy Gray O` Malley Also,"Brotherhood" cut out a lot of supporting characters, dramatic moments and backstory from The Manga that was in The 2003 Anime as well as dumbing down The Homunculi`s personalities(Aside from Greed and Wrath)beyond being Father`s bitches and looking down on humans! Not to mention exaggerating the more humorous moments early in The Manga to "Looney Tunes" levels.(Yet another example of Japan saying "Dumb things down for the poor, simple Westerners.")
Eh, I disagree. Sure Envy is more like that in Brotherhood but it's to serve the point that Envy is ultimately jealous of humans. I think it's explained pretty well with his death scene in Brotherhood
@@NinjaSox7 Even there, it was more of a character moment for Roy than Envy, also considering Envy`s actions in that series` backstory the whole attempt to make us sympathize with him rang hollow!
Great video! Legit surprised it isn't in the hundred thousands views range. FMA 2003 was my first introduction to mature themes of war, political conspiracies, regret... At age 10. I love it to this very day!
I'd add the ending also showed that you can have a sad emotional ending without just killing off a main character. This ending was so gripping to me because it ended with despair (like, how can they ever make it through the other world again, especially Ed stuck in our world where alchemy doesn't exist?) but also hope (they still keep on trying)
I honestly think that 2003s best written character is Sloth, she is just so beautifully written that I cant even put into text, like she also has a relationship with almost every main character Dante - Master Edward and Alphonse - Sons and Creators Lust and Gluttony - Teammates Envy and Wrath - son figures (Envy and Wrath are made to be sons and Sloth is made to be a mother) Pride - her boss
Omg, Sloth is the worst thing the 2003 made just like Dante, both don't make sense and are empty, Father has more good resons and his homunculi really made more sense in being homunculi (they are his emotions from humanity)
2003 had far better directors and it showed, the villain also wasn’t as generic also better characterization imo, 2003 just had scenes that were far above any scene I saw in brotherhood, never much cared for canon anyway brotherhood was far too boring and generic
Yeah I agree! The FMA 2003 directors and characterization of the characters were far more better than Brotherhood! Let's be real! MOST OF ALL THE CHARACTERIZATION OF ED, I LOVE THE 2003 ED WAY MORE!
Brotherhood is for people who don't have the maturity to appreciate the emotional content and all the subtleties of FMA 2003. Brotherhood just turns FMA in a standard shallow anime where everything is based on fighs. And such silly, boring, protracted fights -_- The only good thing about Brotherhood is more consistency in the scenario. But that's it.
I like 2003 way more. It don't have Ling who's my favorite character in the series but everything else makes up for it. The rules may be kinda inconsistent but the music is top tier.
Even tho I watched brotherhood first, ngl I like the story of ‘03 better. There’s so much more to it and the way they developed the characters and and put the comedy in at the right times won me over. The idea of Sloth being Ed and Al’s mother who doesn’t want to be their mother anymore was just brilliant to me. The ending was a bit....meh for me but everything else was god tier
Bruh 2003 Sloth is a piece of shit and doesn't even make sense, the ending is meh, and character development are questionable (2093 Winry makes me want to die), but still a good anime
My native language is Russian and I watched this anime in Russian. I heard a song in Russian in the anime and thought it was also translated. But here in this video you mention how genius and incredible FMA music is and turn this song on. So it appears a Russian song about mother - is an original FMA soundtrack? For real?! Wow I’m truly impressed here
AMAZING REVIEW! Keep it up with other videos of FMA! I currently finished watching FMA 2003 and Brotherhood, and I need to say that I really enjoyed watching it, REALLY ONE OF THE GREATEST ANIMES OF ALL TIME! I really liked FMA 2003,respect for it!
Great video. It's so good to see the original FMA getting some love. Even though Brotherhood is my all-time favourite Anime, I still think FMA 2003 is excellent and it's one of my top favourites.
Really wish this was the version that got more attention. One of my favorite anime's of all time is 03 and I just could never get into Brotherhood like I could with 03. It felt empty compared to 03, I guess? I remember the first 10 episodes or so were really hard for me to get through just because it seemed to lack what 03 had which made me fall in love with it.
Yea I'm on the same boat, got about 10 ish episode into brotherhood. Just couldn't get into it, the color palette and tone just seem too generic like any other shonen anime too me.
Brotherhood doesn't really hit its stride until Episode 15 or so. It's attempt at re-hashing the earlier events of the story is quite rushed and doesn't have the same emotional impact. However, the way it builds up the world and the various characters afterwards feels like peak Shonen. It has much different goals than FMA 03, but they are just as compelling in my opinion. While 03 is a character focused drama, Brotherhood is a celebration of humanity, with all its flaws and achievements. The lighter tone and story beats reflect that, as Arakawa reminds us very frequently of how good humanity can be.
Perhaps my favorite anime ever. Something about it just hit me in ways no other anime has quite managed. The brotherhood adaptation just felt generic by comparison. I think the only other one that has even gotten close was Shiki.
I have finished watching fma and watched 35 episodes from brotherhood.Honestly brotherhood feels like a generic anime(doesn't mean its bad) but I miss the serious and heavy environment from fma 2003.I kind of liked edward from 2003 version than the brotherhood version cuz the former was more realistic
2003 Edward was pretty annoying, Brotherhood Edward had more depth and had better thoughts, it isn't generic, you like more edgy things, Brotherhood have far better philosophical moments, better character development and ending
I started watching it for the second time almost 2 months after i finished it for the first time and barely started it again yesterday but I'm already on episode 31
It sucks that 03 is not on any streaming service right now. Your only options are to either pirate it or fork over a lot of money for a box set on amazon.
I decided for this video not to mention and just focus only on the show even though Concqueror of Shamballa does chancge the ending. Perosonally I like the ending of the show better then how it ends in the movie. But I do think it is a great film with a lot of great moments and definitely worth watching. I was thinking of potenitally doing a video just on it and talking about the things I liked and didn't from the movie!
Essays About Everything Art I think the movie still gave the show a worthy Bittersweet ending BUT after watching your vid (and since I havent seen the in ages up till now) I can tell the Shows ending feels so bittersweet it deserves to be up there with Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Gungrave and the rest from the Anime era were endings rlly felt satsifying without just happy endings& fanservice BUT strong learning & emotion, the Film still does some of that but seeing on it now & how summed it up I could somewhat agree Look forward to the vid :>
Conqueror of Shambhala was on an entirely different level, that can only exist because of the show, but transcends into one of my favorite anime, if not movie of all time. Just my opinion though. The whole parallel worlds theory being utilized, while giving harsh truths connecting our world to Eds world was far more interesting than anything in the series. But again, just my opinion.
You got a new sub!!! My best friend is currently reading FMA, and I actually want to get him to give this show a try. I wouldn’t know how without having this video to show him. The only other one I can find is about the ending. Thank you very much! You made lots of great points, and even made me want to go back and re-watch it. Sure, I prefer where the story goes in the manga, but I’ve never grown sour on this show. I’ve never watched brotherhood because the pacing looks weird to me, but I’m probably going to try it soon as well.
I wish there was a composite version of 2003 and brotherhood. I consider them a pair, preferring the overall plot of brotherhood but the characterization of 2003.
Great video and I love how iv stumbled upon a new channel in the beginning stages. Like everyone else yeah Brotherhood was better but 2003 was still great in its own ways. It's like comparing a great salmon fillet with authentic British Fish n chips. Yeh I'm gonna like one more over the other but different strokes for different folks.
Thank you!!! I like both a lot, but there are so few videos discussing why the original is great. I love both adaptations, but I love the darker atmosphere and tone of FMA. I think the score really adds to the darker feeling. Amestrous feels like a war torn country and each character does carry the weight of their failures. While FMAB feels like a country with a few rebel proxy wars. Bratja is so good. For score’s it’s at the top right next to Green Bird from Cowboy Bebop.
There's so much I could write because I love Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 and it's my #1 favorite piece of fiction EVER. But great video! "Why did you leave, wasn't eternal life enough for you?" "Dante, there's no such thing as eternal life." ~~Chills
I only watched Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 once the summer of 2019, and I love the ending. Contrast to FMAB’s ending, Ed didn’t get his brother back. This emphasizes how the law of equivalent exchange is fair, yet unjust, when put to the extreme, such as Dante wanting to extend her life, and unfortunately for the two brothers wanting to bring their mom back.
@@JuniorRDZ04 Movie was a bit dissapointing, clearly far from the level of quality the series had. But the ending was good I think Brotherhood had a better ending. But the 2003 series just had so many great, iconic moments, that i still prefer it over Brotherhood. When i think FMA, i think of the 2003 series
@@avinadadmendez4019 - Hmm. Interesting. The movie commentary said that they originally wanted to make a short sequel series with about 12 to 13 episodes, but they ended up with having to do a movie instead. That’s probably why some plot points are rushed. I got into the series by reading the manga, and I’m glad I did. 2003 has it’s moments, and I say it develops Ed even more than the original, but a bunch of moments from the manga just elevated how great they were in FMAB.
This was the first anime I ever watched and although Haikyuu has surpassed it as my absolute favorite so far it still has a special place in my heart for that reason. There’s so much I love about this show and in a lot of ways I much prefer it to Brotherhood.
Im gonna be honest 2003 is better than brotherhood. Botherhood is a great shounen, but 2003 is a series that can transcend the genre. 2003 had better music, better art direction, more developed characters, dark somber tone, and more developed themes. I also think the ending to brotherhood was bad and hollow.

Brotherhood is far superior. But I do appreciate 2003 fma
Bro, I think you're wrong there... 2003 has many things Brotherhood don't have. Don't get me wrong, I loved Brotherhood, bud I don't think I would enjoy it without not watching 2003 first. I think it's real insult to greatness of 2003 to talk about it as inferior to Brotherhood... there are many reasons why. I'm genuinly pissed off by someone stating Brotherhood is superior. It is degrading the value of 2003 (I know I am repeating myself, but I think it needs to be explicitly and many times said for people to know).
@@Lucifer-vb8gd You've got it all wrong. It's actually the opposite. Saying that the 2003 series is superior to Brotherhood is an insult to Brotherhood because Brotherhood is clearly the superior series.
FMA 03 is Bigger Broader Cinematic not to mention Super heroic with Sense Realism and Drama Full of Characterization heroes and villains than Brotherhood.
honestly my only problem with fma03 were the fights,(except the greed fight)i feel like the fights were a little boring and could've been animated better but to be fair everything else makes up for it,still an amazing anime tho
I think the fights were short and sweet. I hate unrealistic dragged out fast paced "chess matches." In reality, fights are short and sweet. And devastating if it ends in death. 03 did that just perfectly, with a more realistic approach to even its fighting. Plus, the whole no talking and saying "your move to the enemy" was toned the helll down. In fact, the closer Ed got to the ending, he just straight up murdered The Homunculuses. No stupid talk, he matured, and took things more seriously.
Vídeo muito bom. Gostei por ser um dos poucos que trata de forma eloquente o FMA 2003, ao invés de só engrandecer o Brotherhood. Faça mais vídeos do FMA, por favor, especialmente sobre o Kimbley
I hope you won't mind me correcting (or rather, adding my thoughts) to yours: "Following the manga to a T" is actually false. From the beginning there are changes (often improvements) to the original. Hughes is introduced sooner, which in turn establishes Roy's scheming personality and Ed's beef with him sooner. Barry the serial killer gets an episode before we ever meet him in the manga where he kidnaps Winry and shows how helpless two children still are when facing real danger. We meet Nina sooner as the Elrics live with them during exam prep allowing us viewers to bond with her. Al passes the alchemist exam, but is forced to give it up on it to avoid their body's secret coming out during a physical exam, adding to his sacrifice and Ed's burden. (In the manga only Ed takes the exam and this never comes up.) Lust gets more characterization from the get go...and the list goes on. You are spot on about the rest though and I won't repeat them because I hope people just watch you saying them : )
I love it too. But when did Greed stop wanting a life of searching? He was weakened and liked death more than becoming Dante's hostage again (why didn't they kill him in hundreds of years anyway?). Besides, like it or not: 2003's actual ending is "Conqueror of Shamballa". But it is cool to have a female main villain in a shonen show, what other series other than perhaps Naruto with Kaguya did that?
FMA 2003 is greatest and incredible story driven series about character developemtn of the heroes and villains. the heroes and homunculi have a lot of personality than BH's counterparts. the homunculi who have emotion & feelings & humanity were deceived and manipulated by dante they're the victims.
I agree. I even made a video about how the whole "No soul" thing was part of Dante`s manipulation and because she summoned The Homunculi from The Gate, she knew for a fact they had souls, she lied to them to redirect their anger towards Hohenheim, their creators, the rest of humanity and the Elrics on purpose!
FMAB is great and apparently better because it's more 'faithful' to the manga. However, I feel its attempt to distinguish itself from its predecessor works against its potential to be the better version. The most oddly striking is the colour palette. It robs the show of its efficacy to dispense its characteristic dark themes (not that it can't be done with such colours). It's sorely missing the atmospheric nature and sombre tone of FMA. FMAB had the chance to build on FMA, take what really worked and turn it into a masterpiece. Sadly it failed because there's so much wasted potential. Some do look fondly on FMA but are afraid to admit its way better because they may have, at some point, argued FMAB is better; doing so now would feel like a shot in the foot. I like FMAB but FMA hits me in ways the former doesn't.
I sometimes feel like people who dismiss 03 fma just don't like character dramas. They prefer happy endings and want to see the characters win and for some reason hate everything sad. Makes me sad because i miss animes such as fma 03 where it was ok for the characters to lose all while its not just drama for dramas sake but to make a statement and say something.
The only thing I don't like about 2003 is that most filler/ed&al only journyes have a formula: ed&al meet someone(and posibly a girl their age or younger), work with them and then get betrayed. Love 2003, better than mangahood
I saw the title and already knew it was better... old anime from like 90-2000’s were golden era. I really dont like the new soundtracks, and the mix of detailed and not so detailed art was just magic...
Yes. FMA2003 is much much better than brotherhood. People misunderstand that brotherhood is not same as manga. Also FMA2003 was too much succcess in Japan. By those FMA2003'succcess, they got money to make brotherhood. Anyway, FMA2003's DVD sales is much more than brotherhood in Japan.

Fullmetal alchemist 2003 I enjoyed it some of the side characters did get side lined and those filler episodes were not that good I still enjoy it I did not like the movie though the movie was a little bit mid I think they should’ve found out the ending to wrap up the whole series instead of making that movie
I'm with you on 2003 being great (it is!), but your history of why 2003 diverged from the manga is wrong. The anime didn't catch up to the manga by surprise and then, oh no, they had to scramble to decide what to do. The divergence was planned from the beginning with the help of Arakawa, who designed 2003-only characters like the Trighum brothers. It was the plan for the two versions to diverge all along.
It shows a lot of a confidence as a creator to let someone do their own interpretation of such an original idea.
yeah dude love this show
The show starts to deviate as early as the first transmutation that causes Al to loose his body

What makes the ending even sadder is that Ed says he doesn’t want to kill anybody, but we find out the every time Ed uses alchemy he takes the lives of someone on the other side of the gate.
He uses their soul up, but yeah, it's not a nice revelation to have.

IGNAT RADU VASILE It’s way better than Brotherhood, because the plot elements are less generic and the themes and tone are handled far better.
Honestly FMA 03 might be my favorite anime of all time. It shaped my taste in anime a lot and got me into darker storytelling.
Honestly same, it's also really rare to see an anime go into this sort of storytelling without it seeming horror inspired
It always makes me happy to come across others who still praise and appreciate FMA 03 for all it brought to the table. (And not get attacked by the BH fanboys)
Shoot-it usually makes me happier to see people say they prefer fma 03 over brotherhood more than the reverse-even though I love both equally and think they’re great!
2023 marks the 20th anniversary of FMA 2003
So wild!
Can we just, _acknowledge_ the dubious implications when Scar was talking about the full extent of what the military did in Lior and then Rose came holding her _baby?_ Cause yeah, they did that.
This
I didn't catch that until my 2nd viewing in 2015. It went right over my head the first time
I thought that was brilliant. Fma 2003 does such a fantastic job at portraying war and its tragedies, and I've seen people say "that was unnecessary", but in reality it's even worse
@@alexthegs2624 Exactly!
Yep, that's the point, and it was smart not saying it outright so that people have to come to that realization on their own.
One thing people dont realize is that 03 fma's music is so iconic, its used to this day in youtube videos xD
I agree with this analysis^^
I agree too!
I agree, we needed a shonen-esque ending where it is all sad and shit
Another good anime example where it diverged away from the manga is the original Sailor Moon
P.S. a nice work
Well said!! I am happy you enjoyed the video!
as a huge FMA fan, this video is brilliant. thank you!
Thank you so much for watching! I am glad you enjoyed it!!
Or worse, “we can like both.”
FMA had to crawl, stumble and walk so Brotherhood could sit on a float.
In Japan, people consider Brotherhood is not exactly follow the manga.
Yea the fma 03 is my favorite anime. Ppl complain about the ending but I think it suited the anime well. Bitter sweet
I totally agree! The ending for both series fits the tone of each perfectly
Tbh I preferred FMA to Brotherhood, it was so much more dramatic and interesting. Brotherhood's humor also just rubs me wrong way, I can't take anything that's happening seriously, all of it's dumb humor just undermines all of it's tension.
Just finished rewatching the series 30 minutes ago. My 3rd watch in 8 years and one word: BEAUTIFUL!
It is so good!!
@@aniessays So so good! Time for Conqueror of Shamballa now!
I watched 03 before brotherhood and I came in with lower expectations than brotherhood, while my expectation was reached and stayed and I enjoyed brotherhood very much buuuuut............
I watched 03 twice
Well done , I am glad seeing more ppl talking strongly bout the Fma 03 Anime cuz it rlly gives more than ppl think ^^
I totally agree!!!
I thought the fight scenes were more realistix too. Short and sweet, not drawn out or fast paced "chess matches."
Especially when he kills Greed. Far more interesting and tragic than the Greed in Brotherhood.
Both shows are some of my favorite anime I've seen, they're completely different and that's why I like them both as their own things.
NinjaSox7 I totally agree! I love them both!
Its almost summed up in one scene. when Edward fights envy in the original, the face changes envy does is to remind ed of the mistakes and hardships, its pretty haunting.
Then in brotherhood hes like "WAWAWA IM CRAZY ENVY AND IMA JUST CHANGE MY FACES AND BE CWAZY"
Envy is my favorite homunculus from the original because hes the most relateable but I hated him in brotherhood.
It's so tragic FMA 2003 and sad ,it makes the manga looks so cartoonish , it's so weird but i just love more FMA 2003 than the manga
I honestly think that 2003s best written character is Sloth, she is just so beautifully written that I cant even put into text, like she also has a relationship with almost every main character
Dante - Master
Edward and Alphonse - Sons and Creators
Lust and Gluttony - Teammates
Envy and Wrath - son figures (Envy and Wrath are made to be sons and Sloth is made to be a mother)
Pride - her boss
A year late to this, but the Greed vs. Ed fight is still one of my absolute favorite anime moments of all time.
@@fedrajani19 When it comes to Ed’s characterization, the best is probably the manga
I think I will really like fma more than brotherhood since it looks more dramatic and quiet I'm not that fan of fmab tbh
I like 2003 way more. It don't have Ling who's my favorite character in the series but everything else makes up for it. The rules may be kinda inconsistent but the music is top tier.
I can imagine how Ling would've been in the original fma, and I'm pretty sure dante would manipulate him in a similar way that she did with Rose
Tbh, the ending was great
Bruh 2003 Sloth is a piece of shit and doesn't even make sense, the ending is meh, and character development are questionable (2093 Winry makes me want to die), but still a good anime
Greed's death hit the feels real hard when I was younger
Always gotta support some FMA 2003 hype 👍🏻
I'm so glad I'm binge watching full metal alchemest 2003 instead of brotherhood
Fr. I really like it so far. My roommate hates the 2003 one though. He’s a Brotherhood stan
Can't really see how anyone can see Brotherhood, and think it makes this one look like shit.
The og was fucking great.
Glad you liked the video! Can't get enough of the FMA love!
Thank you for giving FMA 2003 the love it deserves!
Great video. It's so good to see the original FMA getting some love. Even though Brotherhood is my all-time favourite Anime, I still think FMA 2003 is excellent and it's one of my top favourites.
I am actually releasing a video on my top 10 favorite anime this coming Monday and I think we share very similar opinions on it!!
@@aniessays Cool, I'm looking forward to it. I'll post my top 10 favourite Anime once you've uploaded it.
FMA03 for story and characters, FMAB for fights
Really wish this was the version that got more attention. One of my favorite anime's of all time is 03 and I just could never get into Brotherhood like I could with 03. It felt empty compared to 03, I guess? I remember the first 10 episodes or so were really hard for me to get through just because it seemed to lack what 03 had which made me fall in love with it.
Yea I'm on the same boat, got about 10 ish episode into brotherhood. Just couldn't get into it, the color palette and tone just seem too generic like any other shonen anime too me.
Same with me brotherhood just felt like a watered down version to me
Brotherhood doesn't really hit its stride until Episode 15 or so.
FMA 2003 is far better in my opinion
FMA 2003 Dark fantasy.
Yo I just rewatched the series, it’s so beautiful
Perhaps my favorite anime ever. Something about it just hit me in ways no other anime has quite managed. The brotherhood adaptation just felt generic by comparison. I think the only other one that has even gotten close was Shiki.
I totally agree, nothing has impacted me like this show has!
I like the art style better than brotherhood. And Alphonses voice actor is better there I said it
amazing video! fma 03 holds such a special place in my heart and rarely anyone still talks about it!
I really loved both versions of the show, but I like 03 abit more
19:15 this reminds me of the choir song from Cowboy Bebop that plays in “Balled of Fallen Angels”
awesome video! i completely agree with your points. FMA03 is still my favorite show of all time so many years after seeing it :D
Thanks for watching it! I will never get tired of rewatching it!
@@pedro_gc_lima you are right i was edgy indeed

I’ve seen the 2003 anime and read the manga series but I have never watched Brotherhood
The Manga ,2003 Anime and Brother Hood are All Good in My Opinion .

It sucks that 03 is not on any streaming service right now. Your only options are to either pirate it or fork over a lot of money for a box set on amazon.
Amazing take on an amazing anime. I appreciate this vid man
I appreciate you watching it :)
What do you think about Conqueror of Shamballa? I don't think you mentioned it at any point despite ot being the ending to the series. Just curious
Essays About Everything Art I think the movie still gave the show a worthy Bittersweet ending BUT after watching your vid (and since I havent seen the in ages up till now) I can tell the Shows ending feels so bittersweet it deserves to be up there with Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Gungrave and the rest from the Anime era were endings rlly felt satsifying without just happy endings& fanservice BUT strong learning & emotion, the Film still does some of that but seeing on it now & how summed it up I could somewhat agree
Look forward to the vid :>
Conqueror of Shambhala was on an entirely different level, that can only exist because of the show, but transcends into one of my favorite anime, if not movie of all time.
Just my opinion though. The whole parallel worlds theory being utilized, while giving harsh truths connecting our world to Eds world was far more interesting than anything in the series.
But again, just my opinion.
Ah, the better one of the two
4:53 best part
You got a new sub!!! My best friend is currently reading FMA, and I actually want to get him to give this show a try. I wouldn’t know how without having this video to show him. The only other one I can find is about the ending. Thank you very much! You made lots of great points, and even made me want to go back and re-watch it. Sure, I prefer where the story goes in the manga, but I’ve never grown sour on this show. I’ve never watched brotherhood because the pacing looks weird to me, but I’m probably going to try it soon as well.
I am glad you liked the video and thanks for the sub!!! I would recommend watching Brotherhood as well, how I see the more FMA the better!
Thanks for the support of the channel!!!!!
Brotherhood wasn’t better
Thank you!!! I like both a lot, but there are so few videos discussing why the original is great. I love both adaptations, but I love the darker atmosphere and tone of FMA. I think the score really adds to the darker feeling. Amestrous feels like a war torn country and each character does carry the weight of their failures. While FMAB feels like a country with a few rebel proxy wars.
Bratja is so good. For score’s it’s at the top right next to Green Bird from Cowboy Bebop.
I discovered FMA 03 in 2004 when it aired on Adult Swim. I was 10 and my brother was 11 when it aired.
You didn't watch Conqueror of Shamballa?
@@avinadadmendez4019 - Yes. I should’ve said that as well. 😅 What are your thoughts?
@@JuniorRDZ04 Movie was a bit dissapointing, clearly far from the level of quality the series had. But the ending was good
I think Brotherhood had a better ending.
This and Haikyuu are so great!!
Finally! FINALLY SOME LOVE FOR FMA 03!
Yesss!!!
Beautiful essay friend.
I am glad you enjoyed it!
Finally some one who appreciates the original anime don't get me wrong I like brother hood but the original is far superior than brotherhood
@@Lucifer-vb8gd bro I never said brother hood is better than 03 in fact I said the opposite
@@Lucifer-vb8gd You've got it all wrong. It's actually the opposite. Saying that the 2003 series is superior to Brotherhood is an insult to Brotherhood because Brotherhood is clearly the superior series.

Brotherhood felt more fun. 2003 felt more real.
honestly my only problem with fma03 were the fights,(except the greed fight)i feel like the fights were a little boring and could've been animated better but to be fair everything else makes up for it,still an amazing anime tho
I think the fights were short and sweet. I hate unrealistic dragged out fast paced "chess matches."
In reality, fights are short and sweet.
@@watertommyz couldn't agree more.

I hope you won't mind me correcting (or rather, adding my thoughts) to yours:
"Following the manga to a T" is actually false.
And the brotherly love.
Surprised you picked this one over Brotherhood! Only about a quarter of the way through, but it's good so far!! :D
Tyler DOE I love them both haha!
Yeaaaaaahhhh
Let's goooo!
Is no one else going to mention that he says Ed lost left arm and right leg? It's the other way around.
It's very good show not great but very good. Solid 8.5 but yes very underestimate and underrated
well no point in rewatching it if you finished it just an hour ago

Fullmetal alchemist 2003 I enjoyed it some of the side characters did get side lined and those filler episodes were not that good I still enjoy it I did not like the movie though the movie was a little bit mid I think they should’ve found out the ending to wrap up the whole series instead of making that movie
THE BEST VOICE OF ALPHONSE ELRIC IS JHONNY TORRES
Can you please make an analyses on 2003 edward elric?
You forgot the FMA movie
I'm with you on 2003 being great (it is!), but your history of why 2003 diverged from the manga is wrong. The anime didn't catch up to the manga by surprise and then, oh no, they had to scramble to decide what to do. The divergence was planned from the beginning with the help of Arakawa, who designed 2003-only characters like the Trighum brothers. It was the plan for the two versions to diverge all along.
Actually, they come from the first FMA light novel. So 2003 not only adapts part of the manga, but elements from the light novel too.
