Alternative Plot: What if he was traumatized by the battle that he started to "see" creatures but were actually missiles and big bullets those that destroyed his fellow comrades. When he told Sophie about this she said she believed him but she knew his mind was lost already. So, when he came back to Arkham and went directly to see Sophie he had his ultimate breakdown when he had a vision of this "creature" of him crawling out from inside her so he shot it but was actually Sophie. Then, he snapped out of that trance and realized what he had done. He found someone else (presumably Tommy) tormented by the same thing and then found dead so he avoided suicide because he knew after all, those creatures were real and now he joins the others to fight them.
Yeah, that's also my take on him. It's also of note, that in the card game, he is included in the Carcosa cycle, which has the “unreliable narrator” as it's main theme. Sure, the character and lore is older than the card game, but it seems fitting. His weakness "It Was All My Fault" is when he is realizing occasionally, that he killed his wife, imho.
0:30 "Charlie Kane fighting vampire hunters" What??! How could he betray the other vampire hunters like that?! Has Charlie turned; is that the new lore?

He made her aware of them which is why they noticed her thus him feeling guilty for causing her death. At least, that's the lore I came up with to fill in the gap.
I don’t know about the creature in the marksmanship art, but I think the one in Shell Shock is a star vampire. You can see a 3D model of one from mansions of madness, which is pretty similar to the given description (especially when colored).
There's also a 2013 FFG novel featuring Mark Harrigan (Feeders from Within), which also has Carolyn Fern and Diana Stanley in it. (As well as minor FFG characters like Sheriff Engle, who e.g. shows up in Dirge of Reason, on the return-to-NotZ Easttown, and (misspelled) in the Carnivale of Horrors intro.) I've never read it, but it appears to be Mark/Carolyn/Diana vs Mi-Go/Silver Twilight/Tsathoggua. It evidently has a different backstory for Mark, wherein he didn't serve in the Great War but rather in the contemporaneous Mexican Border War, and places Mark as coming from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Interesting. Makes me wonder how canonical those novels are viewed as now. I think with Investigators of Arkham they became more focused on building an official universe with these characters.

My guess as to why “it was all my fault” is because he believes he should have been there to protect her. Would a left handed person hold a gun in a resting position with their left or right hand, like in Mark’s art? If he is indeed left handed, the person in marksmanship (who is left-handed as noted by Bryn) could be Mark, but if not then it’s unlikely. If not, then my vote is it’s his war buddy Tommy.
When looking at Sophie you read out that "when Mark visited Sophie". Surely if he was married he wouldn't visit her since that would be his home? Unless of course they had got married but hadn't moved in together before he left. Just slightly curious wording if she was his wife.
Why am I not surprised you guys started with sexy Mark Harrigan but this is great idea!! I love lore videos and with arkham horror files kinda being my new obsession this is exactly what I wanted/ needed!!
I have to ruin something for you guys -- the card art for The Home Front doesn't actually show Mark Harrigan! It's reused from the Call of Cthulhu Card Game (as a lot of art in AH is), where it was on "Norman Blackwood, Jr." [subtitle: Scholarly Detective] from the Secrets of Arkham expansion. (I've started trying to trace back arts in the game to their sources.)

Ooooh I love this series idea! I know all the investigators have a ton of lore but it's hard to put everything together.

In a further development, the Keen Eye art is from "Norman Blackwood, *Sr.*"
The Home Front is Mark Harrigan's art on Arkham Horror 2nd Edition. So at this point that's the true Arkham Files Mark Harrigan.
