I cannot even put my words into how inspirational and brimming with enthusiasm your videos are, really. You are my favourite creator not because of your technical skills or the video quality (not to say that they are both still fucking perfect and oh my god the VIBES I get from them) but because of your endless creativity and sincerety. The way you're coming up with ideas and the way you seem ashamed of them for a second every time before announcing them and trying them out. The way you care about every little detail that you are creating. This is the true essence of hobby and the way that somebody should dedicate themselves to something they trully love. And every time I watch you, I get filled with these overwhelming emotions of joy of creativity that I could never experience in my life. Thanks to your inspiration, I started playin Mordheim with some friends in our (pretty much dead and unenthusiastic) local club, and trying to recruit some new guys every time I meet them, I started doing more sculpting and converting stuff on almost everything that I do today, and I try to paint more freely, without the limits of what "something should be", focusing more on "what I feel something to be".
Sorry for the long text, but I've gobbled these thoughts and emotions for way too long, ever since you started the Carnival of Chaos army a few years back. Thank your for your videos and your endless joy and creativity, they really mean a lot to some folks like me

Trent, this is an amazing development for indy mini making…I think you carry the torch further. You know what might work in place of having to swing the mold outside is buying an old medical centrifuge and attaching the mold to the spin plate. You could make a cheap clear acrylic enclosure to watch the mold as it spins and ensure its not leaking resin. Then as you test this method (and it works) you develop your own model mold centrifuge made to your specifications. And boom…The Miscaster is born

Great video Trent! Great to see the DIY ethos being spread.
It think why the spin casting worked on your demon mini, and not so much with the troll, is due to the shapes.
The outward forces would be great for shoving the resin from the plinth through and old mates skinny legs.
No so much with the troll, as it is forcing any trapped air back into the sprue at the bottom.
If you where to design a mould specifically for spin mould, try putting the feeder/riser on top of the mini and little vents out the bottom 😊

I remember going through all of this myself with my own miniatures, and honestly I went through all those stages as well. Though in my case, watching a lot of a youtuber named Robert Tolone. I've actually gotten it to where all I've needed was the 'base' of the sprue and then just eyeballing where the vents need to go and cutting them out in the silicone directly.
But... nothing beats a pressure pot. Seriously its basically magic at just making some of the 'worst' bubble filled models into crispy clean figures. It also creates considerably more flash but its so whispy an thin you brush it off with your fingers.
Still, love how those castings turned out.

Fixing minor issues with that tiny copper pipe was pretty clever.
I think this part of the process could be refined using syringe needles. They come in various diameters and have this angled and sharpened tips so you could drill quite clean channels through the silicone I think. Maybe I should give casting another try myself 😅

about the spinning around method i've been thinking about building a machine that do it for you, like a bike wheel with some support to put the mold outside the frame and some chain to give it speed so you have the same work with less effort and considerably cheap (compared to a vacuum chamber)

Wee thing I learnt about at Kamping Kitbash, put bicarb in a dropper bottle. Comes out super smoothly and allows for much more precise application and is super handy in a wee bottle. Just thinking about how much you use it!

Hey Trent, you most likely already know of this technique but... 2 part molds may be the way to go. I live in Brazil and we (most of us) have no access to vaccum chambers, pressure pots and not even these fancy silicones and resins. We have to make do with some industrial stuff, cristal resins and so. The only way I get some decent casts is with 2 part molds. It is very similar to what you did there, but instead of making the vertical box, you make a bed of plastiline and work it to the borders of the mini (carefully), you can inbed some wires to get the air holes, and make big dents to register the 2 sides together. You then build the box around it to the appropriate height. You can then pour the silicone filling the box. When the silicone sets, you flip the mold, remove the plastiline, brush some vaseline to prevent the two parts to sticking together and pour the silicone for the second part. It is a more time consuming process, but the molds are pristine and you get to access every corner of the mold to brush the resin (if needed). Anyway, I love your attitude of getting things done. Cheers!

I've never considered the need for a 2 part mold until now that you've said that is a solution to a material access problem. These fancy silicones are certainly a luxury! I will give it a go again, I have made a couple in the past, and they are certainly more time consuming but a good skill to know for reasons you're describing. I'll make a video at some point, thankyou!

was just about to comment with this. I've not done much mould making, but 2 part always make life easier!

The terrain sprue seems like it might use as much resin as the mini. I was thinking you could sculpt the actual sprue to look like branches or a tree and use a little less resin and give the troll a little more fantasy vibe. You can also cut up the branches to build different looking trees.

Awesome. I don't know if this would work, but some kind of vibrating table may remove the bubbles

11:58 - That sound is a flashback to the dentists office, please replace it with birds chirping or something later ;) This video couldn’t have come at a better time :) I’ve just started my first ever attempt at sculpting «The Slightly Unwashed One» with Fimo-clay, WorkInProgress in my Community Tab, and used a gift card I won to buy a small silicon mold making kit and a small pack of casting resin from my local hobby chain just to see if I can do this - exciting times ahead and thanks for another great video keeping the flame burning :)
