The thing I forgot that I never went back to was...when I mentioned Riccardo was on ARTSTATION. I was going to recommend that if you are not on it, it's a great place to not only check out art, but share your work. I need to really get my stuff going on over there as well. www.artstation.com very fun art community and TONS of amazing art to drool over!!
The guy's a genius ! He worked alot for french comics, the last great work he did for them is called Saria and he did all in painted colors. It's the sequel of an album drawn by italian artist Eleuteri Serpieri at first called Les enfers. But afterward Riccardo made a new cover for the firts album, and did the 2 sequels. The third one should be printed in next December 2020. He first does this gorgeous pencil work, then he paints over it with mixed techiniques, acrylics but even some oil color too sometimes. The other works he did for USA comics are in pencil with digital color over them and also painted covers btw. He usually doesn't ink with china ink even because inking those pencils would be a f. nightmare. :D
Cool info. I have Los Infiernos and had saved some of Riccardo's Saria work not even realizing that was the sequel to the Serpieri book at first lol. Do you know if his DC pencil work is digital? Looking at it closer, the line work looks a bit artificial and lacking that organic pencil grit I saw in his Saria work.
@@dannycruz5446 I've seen some work where he used also biro pen for hatching. Dunno, maybe they are pencils treated in some way to appear more polished in final product... anyway he does post lots of WIPS in his instagram so you can also see by yourself too. He shares alot.
@@Danimat72 I've seen a couple of videos that kind of looked like inks, or maybe watercolour or gouache - looked low viscosity. Do you think most likely it was just acrylic?
@@jamesr7161 yes it could totally be ! In facts Riccardo in videos i've seen so fa uses a mixed thechnique: acrylics here, oils there, whatever works for the image ! Sorry for the long time no reply.
I’ve met him at New York Comic Con. Brilliant artist. There is a reason why his anatomy knowlage is superior: He was a professional body builder. True story. He knows everything about human anatomy.
I absolutely love digital colors over pencils. I've been struggling to get better at it. I love the work that Taurin Clarke does bouncing back and forth between digital and tradition for each step. I also am in awe of some of Ben Oliver's stuff where you can't tell what part of the process is digital and what part is traditional.
Amazing tight pencil work, muted earthy palette and persistent patience. I dig the look of the digital paints over the tight pencils of Douglas Wheatley on Star Wars Dark Times and also Tomas Giorello on King Conan. The colours are added in a way where the pencil line work shines through, maybe the pencils are darkened up a little.
A video about Serpieri would be cool, most of his work is very nsfw though. Federici picked up illustrating the BD Saria after Serpieri did the first album
Hi Richard, David Finch mentioned in his stream that he would gladly do a cover for your Blaster Kid comic. just wanted to let you know in case you missed it
I've been a fan of colors right over pencils ever since I saw Cary Nord's Conan run and Esad Ribic's art for Marvel, but I think it's very easy to mess up and flatten out the art if the values aren't on point. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd say that colors over pencils are better for atmospheric lighting, but inks are safer because the line weights and patches of pure black ensure that the various forms in the piece are distinct and help the colors pop. Anyways, thank you for making these videos, I really feel like they're helping me improve a lot as a penciler.
Yes, black line and lacks help forms stad out. On the ounterpart, now print quality has improved very much especially in europe comics... If you see te Hermann Huppen works like Jeremiah and recent ones, he does that with watercolors over very light pencil works and after colors now he add some darker line work at the end so that things pop up more. In his first direct color works he didn't do this, he put colors over pencils and done, but some thing lacked and it was clearly a darker dontour. When i say darker it soesn't mean like ots china ink pure black:... it is more darker color done in watercolor as well. Print from direct colors is now very good, so the final work turns out good in the album. th-cam.com/video/r86g-l5i274/w-d-xo.html

I think he does (or could do) most of it without references but here and there the use of references is clear. He has deep understanding of all aspects of the craft.
Well I think he uses reference as many comic book artists do, he doesn't use many photos like for example Alex Ross does. He's also very expert of anatomy since he said he also worked as illustrator for medical books about human body etc. So he probably doesn't need many references for human body and when he studies he does that from real life.

It's about time! Haha. He's so freaking good that he makes me want to try acrylics.
Always wanted to try acrylics, I just can't get past the price tag and space involved.
@@ArtrichStudio same. I'll just stick with watercolor & gouache for now (price was a huge factor).
