    There's nothing in the front of a Nano to absorb the impact energy. That's one of the reasons it's so inexpensive. Yes, it's meant to be the replacement for a 2-wheeler, in that respect it is better. But at the same time, this car is comparable to a 1950s or '60s European car in its safety performance, and many decades later, we've learned a great deal on how to not have cars get squished into small lumps of metal in collisions.

    I will be honest i hate this car. But am happy to say it's safer then a bike with a fmily of 4 in like they do in inida. I do hope tata makes at at least 2 star.

      +Matthew Caughey In a bike the driver might well roll away in a shunt but the passengerS (usually wife & kids in India) will NOT. Over there this mousetrap of a car is better than any bike, at least the passengers have a chance to survive. Alas it was too expensive to buy anyway for the poor people at whom it was aimed, and the richer rejected it completely.

      Yes. The quality is shoddy. But they delivered a working product. It's much better than 4 people hitching on motorcycle. And unlike China, there wasn't any copyright infringement. Only frugal engineering and manufacturing innovation. If I'm not mistaken, Nano was to Tata what Beetle was to VW.

    it's so funny that people are criticizing something which they have no idea about the idea behind of it. tata nano is not car promising what you expect from the result of this test. nobody including the producer acclaims that. their only concern was to create something small for the traffic. cheap and at least more secure than motorcycle for the families. it's just a car created for the low class families as a more secure alternative than driving a motorcycle with 4-5 people including small kids. it is an alternative for those families which have limited budget to buy a car. its design concerns the very crowded and slow traffic of the big cities of India. nobody can drive the car in this speed level already (in busy cities of India). the basic concern is how can make the traffic safer for these people who are using bikes with many people and they come up with this very affordable car that almost has the same price with motorcycle.

      +Vaibhav Vashisht (Vabby) You can pick up a 3-5 year old car for significanttly less money then a new one and still have a better car then a new one at the same price. The Nano was meant to be something cheap that Indians can afford, as the second-hand market isn't that big in poor countries with low car ownership rates. Same here in Romania. People can't afford expensive new cars (over 15k euros), so alot of people either buy second-hand cars from other countries or get cheap new cars made here. Problem is the those cheap romanian cars break up really often and you'll usually see services full of cheap domestic-made cars with every problem you can possibly imagine...

      Even a normal quality second hand hatchback costs 7000us dollars.
      So you can understand.

    Tata Nano is Always better than a motorcycle or a scooter that are pervasive in India. This is the most economical car in the world made for India - how can it be tested by Global NCAP? That's unfair.
    NCAP should test a motorcycle and scooter and compare the results with Tata Nano.

      BC Jefferson the problem I feel with nano is that it sits in a price range with so low performance, features and safety that it's simply wiser to go for second hand vehicles like Toyota Starlet which is larger, safer, better performing and more reliable and will still maintain a relatively good resale value even if sold third hand.

    This car is not poor man's car.. it costs 3.6 lakhs inr. It can climb mountains and can travel long distances with comfort which is better than a bike.. My friend drove 800kms without a single stop in this little beast with 4 people on board.. hats off to Ratan Tata

What they both have in common is they are from international brands the regularly achieve 4 or 5 star cars in Europe but have churned out zero-star cars in so-called emerging markets such as India with more lax crash safety standards by skimping on safety features just to save a few bucks.

    I would expect them to reinforce the structure.
    For this price you can’t expect much but they could reinforce parts of the structure not the whole thing in terms of cost cutting.
    This thing is discontinued so there’s no point

      Mariah Curry no, the price is not the point. The car is so unstable and easy to damage that it would'nt be worth to put airbags on it :D and youre right the Airbag would almost cost more than the car itself :D

    It is the poor mans car..... I can't think of buying any other 4 wheeler @ 1.5 lakh inr.... Obviously it is much safer than riding a 2 wheeler.

    To be honest This car designed for big families that are poor and can only afford a bike. This is a safer option from bikes and other two wheelrs.

And also this car also has a high boot space. But if a truck get on on the bike then??. Infact most of the accidents are more on bikes then compared to cars.

    This car for this price is an amazing car. I had a Maruti 800 from India. I never will have again a similar headacheless car. I just put a few petrol in and it worked year by year without any problem.
    In Europe for 1500 Euro only a scooter available, or a medium sized chinese quad. The Nano has windshield, roof, heating, doors. And even I think this car is nice. Many people living in villages with poor traffic. Not need the airbag, and the 5 star at all time. Many people going on 60 km/h (40 miles) on empty muddy bumpy roads in the mniddle of 2 villages.
    I love this car for this price.

    This is actually like testing a fish in a tree climbing competition. People should understand that this car is meant for city drive at medium speeds - 50 Kmph or less where it excels in comfort and safety. Nano is not the car for driving in highways at higher speeds.

    Me again... many of you have mentioned better than a motorcycle.... Absolutely wrong. In a motorcycle you are having the option to to divert the direction in a fraction of seconds... But in a car it is not possible. More over, the number of passengers will always be double to the number of riders on a bike.
